Death of Journalism: Daily Breeze Crime "Report"

Print media is in complete freefall.

Last week, I witnessed what pretty much amounts to a funeral, or a celebration of life for the Daily Breeze.

Their long-time crime reporter, Larry Altman, received a warm tribute from the Torrance City Council, including highly respected public employees like the Fire Chief and police officers.

It was a bittersweet moment for the industry.

Now check out what kind of crime reporting we get in the Daily Breeze:

Man hospitalized after suffering gunshot wound in Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach isn't known to be a dangerous or wild city where gunfire goes off on a routine basis.

The article is so lacking in details, especially since the event occurred three days ago.

One would think that the reporter would have gathered enough information besides what was printed:

At about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, March 24, Hermosa Beach police officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of El Oeste Dr. after receiving a report of gunshots heard at the rear of a building, police said in a news release.

A report of gunshots. He identifies the location.

The gunshot victim was later found at a hospital, but it was unclear whether he was transported by authorities. None of the parties to the shooting were present at the scene when officers arrived, the release said.

What is going on here, exactly? How is any of this newsworthy, when there is so little news to begin with?

Details about how many people were involved in the shooting, the number of suspects and the victim were not immediately available.

It's been three days. Still no information? Why publish anything?

Hermosa Beach police investigators are following up on several leads, the release said.

What else did the release "release"? If there was so little information, like the name of the person shot, the other people involved in the shooting, then it would be newsworthy.

With such scant details, why publish this report in the first place?

Final Reflection

Is it any surprise that consumers in the South Bay are no longer reading the Daily Breeze or the local press in general? With such little information for factual reporting, and with crass editorializing from the major reporting in other stories, readers have fewer reasons to pick up--let alone pay for--a copy of the Breeze.

The lack of details in the above segment is stunning. Why even waste time printing such a little article in the first place, since it reports so little?

On top of that, the Internet version of the article has a stock photo with a police vehicle and lights shining. Pretty shoddy, I must say.

The Decline and Fall of the Daily Breeze

The Daily Breeze has become more left-leaning and less relevant in the expanding news culture. Everyone of us can be journalists, with our phones, our I-pads, our laptops.

There is no longer any reason why any of us have to tolerate the Fake News drivel which assaults us on the local and even the regional newspapers. The Los Angeles Times has become particularly odious, since they have embraced Trump derangement syndrome on an unprecedented level. Their editorial serious "Our Dishonest President" really exposed how dishonest the liberal media have become.

Now, what about the Daily Breeze? They have a Pulitzer Prize-winning reported named Rob Kuznia, He even celebrated the award one year after breaking the landmark corruption scandal of fired Centinela Valley Union High School District Superintendent Jose Fernandez.

He also celebrated with the remaining Daily Breeze staff after he had quit. Yes, he left the Daily Breeze even though he had reached the summit with the newspaper. What happened?

He shared with NPR:

The Daily Breeze won a Pulitzer Prize this week. Reporters Rob Kuznia and Rebecca Kimitch and Frank Suraci, an editor on the small-circulation Los Angeles County newspaper, won the local reporting Pulitzer for a series of stories they did about corruption in a local school district. By the time they received the award, one of the reporters was no longer in journalism - he couldn't afford it. Rob Kuznia now works in publicity at the University of Southern California, where the pay is better. He joins us from our studios in Culver City, Calif.

Ouch! That's terrible. The pay is that bad, that even the most qualified journalists like Rob would rather do something else for a living. That ceratinly says something about the remaining funds which keep hack journalists like Nick Green afloat. Does he even make money as one of the few remaining reporters for that newspaper?

SIMON: Could you - I know you've been over this - could you tell us why you felt you had to leave journalism?

KUZNIA: Yes. I think there were two main reasons. First, I - you know, I could pay the rent. So it's not that I couldn't pay the rent, it's just that there wasn't much left after that. And my girlfriend and I were sort of just living paycheck-to-paycheck and doing just fine, you know. We weren't destitute, but we were saving nothing. And so yes, pay was definitely a big factor. And I think the other one, the other major factor, was more of a state-of-the-industry consideration interrelated with the pay issue. Print journalism, especially at the local level, is a scary place to be right now. And it felt like now that I'm pushing 40, it might be a good time to try something new and to obtain a new skill set.

The paper is going down the tubes, and they weren't making good money. 

I say "Good riddance" to the liberal press, although I am sad that Kuznia is no longer reporting. He actually did a pretty decent job as a writer and reporter. One thing also to keep in mind is that the rents have soared in Southern California. The liberal agenda which many of these media corporations have been pushing is now pushing out their workforce.

Now this was an interesting comment:

SIMON: Jobs are disappearing in orthodox journalism.

"Orthodox" journalism? What is that supposed to mean? I would submit, however, that this elitist attitude is one of the reasons why the liberal media is closing up shop. They act as though their profession has a hallowed aura around it, as though journalists and their filters are above criticism.

They have biases, just as everyone else. They will report certain stories with key edges to them, or they will ignore other stories altogether. The media has become more democratized, from the early days of the Drudge Report to the present day. It is now to easy for casual readers to compare different stories, and also find different slants--liberal and conservative, establishment and populist--for the journalism world to hide the fact that the mainstream press has embraced a liberal mindset and slanted the news accordingly.

Final Reflection

I think it's time for us to continue calling out the biased, slanted reporting of all media, and not hold back our derision. For decades, the large, corporate press held all the cards, and they determined which stories were heard, which stories were suppressed, and they decided which narratives they wanted to push.

Looking back at how destructive and distorted the mainstream media has been all these decades, I'm not surprised that President Richard Nixon had an Enemies List. A lot of the people in the press are deliberately misleading and untruthful.

Now they are reaping what they have sewn.

More Daily Breeze Fails: Torey Navarro Issues Corrections

Torey Navarro, wife of Congressional Candidate Omar Navarro, issued the following press release to correct and clarify numerous inaccuracies and smears in the Daily Breeze article:

Statement to the press: Torey Navarro

I wanted to address the concerns on the recent article by the Daily Breeze. My husband Omar was not stalking me. We had our car broken into weeks before. My husband put a tracking device on our car out of concern for our private property. I was at my parents’ house on Valentine’s Day because we had been separated for weeks at this time. My relative found the device on the car and made a police report. 

During that time, I  forgot that Omar mentioned to me before that he put a device on the car after our car got broken into. I realized it was my husband who put the device for our safety.  I went to court and made several attempts through the Orange County District Attorney’s office to have the case dropped. The DA’s office refused to drop the case.  My husband and I lost hours of work going to court and paying Attorney costs. Omar decided to take a deal. So we moved forward with our lives. 

We got back to together for 2 years but simply, I wasn’t able to handle being involved in politics and recently realized we both should go our way into different directions in our lives. This was two months ago. I’m not a fan of politics and wish to be left alone.

Omar and I are still on good terms. It’s saddening how the media will slant the truth. As far as Omar’s former friend, Jeff Benson, goes he started texting me attempting to solicit a date and I turned him down and told Omar. Jeff Benson was a groomsman at our wedding and thought it was unbecoming of him as a friend. Jeff Benson got upset and messaged me again. Because of his failed attempt to solicit me, and me informing Omar of him he got mad. Omar is no longer friends with him as he wishes Omar ill will. 

Also Jeff Benson was not an adviser to Omar’s Campaign, but a paid walker from time to time. 

Also, Pat Furey the Mayor of Torrance condones offensive remarks to women by his silence when he hears these remarks.

Media Fail: Nick Green Lies About Omar Navarro

Nick Green has been spotted getting drunk at local restaurants in the past.

He was working directly with Leilani Kimmel-Dagostino when she was running for Torrance City Council--and she lost twice.

Now he is going after Congressional candidate Omar Navarro.

Not sure why and I am not sure what he intends to accomplish.

It was clearly a hit piece that was published today, with very little to show for itself.

Here are key portions of the hit piece, with corrections:

Omar Navarro, a fringe GOP activist in the South Bay making his second bid to unseat entrenched Rep. Maxine Waters, is on probation until March for a criminal conviction stemming from his use of an electronic tracking device he attached to his wife’s car, the Daily Breeze has learned.

"Fringe". If he were fringe, why would Nick be reporting on him? Doesn't that make him a fringe reporter?

His probation does not end until March 13, according to court records.

Navarro, who has never held elected office, is an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump who was trounced by Waters in 2016 in her heavily Democratic 43rd Congressional District that stretches from Westchester to Torrance and inland to South Los Angeles. Waters has become something of a liberal hero for her outspoken criticism of Trump.

She's also a laughingstock for anyone who breathes and knows how to count.

Navarro, who resigned from his volunteer post on the Torrance Traffic Commission earlier this year when faced with censure or removal for his political activities in various Los Angeles County cities, is second vice president of the rogue Beach Cities Republican Club. The county’s GOP leadership revoked the charter of the Redondo Beach-based club earlier this year for attacking members of its executive committee and violating its bylaws.

That is a flat-out lie.

Omar Navarro announced his decision to step down as Second Vice President at least three months ago. Where have you been, Nick? 

Navarro, reached for comment Wednesday morning, was evasive at first about his criminal conviction.

He initially said there are “a lot of Omar Navarros,” implying that perhaps someone with the same name was convicted of the charge. Then he said the incident that led to the criminal charge occurred “years ago,” rather than last year. Finally, he acknowledged the misdemeanor conviction, but at first blamed the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the media for “fake news” before finally admitted it was his own doing.

“The district attorney refused to dismiss the case — it was (filed) under false pretenses,” Navarro said. “The Daily Breeze is biased news.

“I got what I deserved,” he finally said. “Everybody makes mistakes.”

Huh? It sounds more like the news reporter is being evasive than Omar.

“Omar continues to think he is above the law, ” said Jeff Benson, a former spokesman for Navarro’s 2014 Torrance City Council and 2016 congressional campaigns. “He recently suggested that I should track down his wife. As his closest adviser for over four years, I always condemned anyone who engages in risky behavior like that, so now he has a private investigator do it for him. He is a real hot head and persistent.”

Who is this Jeff Benson guy? He sounds bitter since he didn't jump on the Navarro train for his 2018 bid against Maxine Waters.

Navarro’s most recent campaign finance filing shows that on Sept. 13, Pasadena-based Grevillius Detective Service was paid $588 for “opp research,” an abbreviation for opposition research.

What does the "opp research" have to do with anything? Is Green suggesting that it has something to do with his wife? Another false smear.

A former car salesman who said he is living off savings while challenging Waters, Navarro hosted the  Thursday night fundraiser at Trump National Golf Club for guests paying $125 a plate. 

Arpaio, the featured speaker, was convicted last year of defying a court order to stop detaining suspected illegal immigrants. He later was pardoned by President Trump.

Yes, and that just fries liberals so much. They can't deal with the fact that an effective sheriff was able to crack down on so much crime and corruption.

Final Reflection

Here is the letter I issued to Nick Green:

Nick, you've done a poor job again.

Omar Navarro is not the second vice president of the Beach Cities Republicans. He stepped down in July so that he could focus completely on his Congressional bid. I noticed that you didn't write the fact that he's raised over $100,000 despite the fact that many see his bid for congress as nearly impossible.

You need to change that.

The fact that you couldn't do the basic research to confirm that Omar's no longer with BCR is pretty sad. If you wanted to write a hatchet piece, you should have at least done your research.

By the way the LA County Central Committee which unjustly revoked our charter has gone bankrupt. Their executive director was laid off because they can't afford him anymore.

Local club leaders refused to donate to them. Honestly I believe BCR probably has more money in our bank account then then the Central Committee does. Why haven't you written about that?

Last of all, there's a local blogger named Joseph Turner who did a better job of uncovering sexual perversion and Financial mismanagement in the state capital then you did. How could you have missed those stories?

I predict that the Daily Breeze will have to lay off Nick Green within the next 6 months.

Daily Breeze Fake News--BCR President DID Offer Statement Re: RPLAC Revocation

The print version of the Daily Breeze states that I did not provide an email comment for the paper.

That is wrong.

I responded to Green's press inuiry on Friday, February 17 -- he and the Daily Breeze had PLENTY of time to update the article about the BCR Charter revocation -- but didn't until the day after the article was printed.

Why?

By the way ... here is my statement:

RPLAC (Republican Party of Los Angeles Central Committee) revoked the charter for the Beach Cities Republicans because we are a bold, conservative, active group and were not afraid to fight.

RPLAC also shut down another club because they were conservatives. This purging in establishment GOP institutions is happening more often than it should.

It's kind of like what Hillary Clinton's camp did to the Bernie Sanders' supporters.

The Central Committee Chairwoman for my district( AD-66) Janice Webb--under pressure from party leaders Andy Gharakani, Gary Aminoff, and Mark Vafiades--was trying to get rid of me as far back as September.

Why? Because I am conservative and an outspoken activist who actually wanted to make our case -- and make California Great Again.

I am not sure why she was upset and was trying to get rid of me as President of the Beach Cities Republicans.

Our club membership numbers were growing. We have a more diverse group of people than before.

Five more people just joined our club last night. We even have  members joining us from Southeastern Los Angeles County. Republican elected officials throughout the South Bay who have not receive any support from the RPLAC (Republican Party of Los Angeles County Central Committee) have spoken at my club.

Many of our members have been featured on TV, as well, supporting President Trump!

Regarding Webb's crusade to try and get rid of me:

I had met with Chairwoman Janice Webb personally to find out what the conflict was. She refused to provide me any answers.

Instead, she pressured me to cancel a "Latinos For Trump" meeting that the Beach Cities Republicans hosted on October 20th.

She even went as far as calling my boss --!-- to pressure him to get me to cancel the meeting.

It was unethical, it was unlawful. I filed numerous complaints about this abusive behavior, and nothing was done about it.

After the election, I received a hastily written email from the Executive Director of RPLAC demanding that I step down or the club's charter would be revoked.

They cited no just reason for doing so. It was outrageous and hastily written, too: My name was spelled wrong, TWICE!

They basically put a gun to the memberships' head -- "If you re-elect Arthur for President, we will revoke your charter."

I thought elections were supposed to determine leadership, right?

Our club fought back, we stood up to this internal bullying, and we had our election. I won re--election by 2/3 of the vote.

So why did RPLAC leaders go to all this trouble to get rid of the largest and  most active GOP Clubs in LA County?

Ultimately, I was a whistleblower for abusive behavior against me and my club, and in a petty attempt to silence or de-legitimze us, they revoked our charter--and for the most unjustified of reasons.

Press Release: Re: Revocation of BCR Charter by RPLAC reported in the Daily Breeze

To the South Bay community and California voters, conservatives and freedom-fighting liberals:

The Daily Breeze reported on the destructive and unjust decision of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County Central Committee (RPLAC for short) to revoke the charter of the Beach Cities Republicans.

AND THEY WON!

This decision was an arbitrary attack against our club and our leadership. Strangely enough, the revocation occurred in Mid-January, but the Daily Breeze chose to report on this situation a month later.

Despite petty attacks and jealous infighting, the Beach Cities Republicans is standing strong.

We are bold, brazen, and building our party. We will remain Republicans, even though our former leadership did not measure up to that responsibility.

RPLAC has failed to register voters, fundraise, or organize. In effect, they are not an effective Central Committee. These glaring failures have now turned into immoral liabilities, as the county leadership chooses to attack volunteer clubs rather than reach out to voters, shape the culture, and win elections.

Their reasons for trying to remove me or others from leadership is unfounded and still very much a mystery. Anyone who reads the article by the Daily Breeze will note that RPLAC did not provide reasons for revoking our charter—because ultimately they cannot.

Despite formal and factual errors in the Daily Breeze article, the article highlights BCR’s influence, and the light shining on the corrupt RPLAC operatives is much needed.

More Blowback for Muratsuchi's "Trump-Hadley" Sign: Democrats Voting for Hadley

I just read this letter in the Daily Breeze today, from Southwood Homeowner's Association President Marc Danziger:

Support David Hadley in 66th Assembly District

Apparently campaign signs are appearing in the South Bay saying, “Trump Hadley.” It appears that these are being paid for and placed by Assemblyman David Hadley’s election opponent, Al Muratsuchi.

In an earlier letter here, I said Muratsuchi needed to do better than try to link Hadley to Donald Trump in order to win my vote (again).

With this stunt, I’ve given up. Muratsuchi has sent two mailers that weren’t Trump-Hadley nonsense. One was a list of platitudes and the other listed his support from the always staunchly Democratic local public unions. Color me unimpressed.

Based purely on the underhanded politics that are sullying this campaign, this lifetime Democrat is crossing party lines for this race.

I’m infuriated that cheap stunts like this are a part of this election.

I invite other local citizens — regardless of party affiliation — to take a stand and let candidates and their consultants know that this kind of nonsense isn’t welcome in the South Bay, in any race, ever.

How does that feel, Al? But I already told the fired former Assemblyman that the South Bay does not want Al Muratsuchi back in the state assembly.

What can one say? Politicians who treat the voters like idiots and their opponents like the dregs of humanity can expect nothing less than derision and contempt from South Bay citizens.

He is a good man and does not support Donald Trump’s bid for the presidency.

Trans-insanity in the South Bay

Trasngenderism is a mental disorder.

Stating this truth is not hate speech.

This is biology.

This is fact.

And facts do not care about feelings.

We cannot be guided by misguided sentiments, or the aggressive LGBT agenda which has neither caring nor regard for the truth.

It is truly disturbing to see so much over-attention given over to this new perversion.

And to see children being trapped into this insanity is very disturbing.

How a South Bay transgender advocate is making change in the workplace

Carolyn Weiss vividly recalls the nerve-racking moment she stood in front of a group of 85 colleagues who only had known her as a man.

"She" is still a he. Give me a break.

The South Bay resident had come out as transgender to her wife and teenage son a year earlier, but had not yet begun to change outwardly. She gathered her co-workers to let them know she would soon be transitioning.

Weiss recounted to the crowd the conversation with her family members — the most difficult of her life — and took an emotional pause, turning around to reach for a glass of water.

When she faced the room again, the audience had risen to its feet with applause.

“It was probably the most amazing thing I’ve ever experienced,” recalled Weiss, now 62 and retired from a 32-year career working for the city of Los Angeles.

She chuckled when she remembered one of the questions that came from the crowd during a Q&A session that followed.

“One of my buddies from my old division who’s a big sports fan, he raised his hand and said, ‘Can I ask something? Can we still talk about sports?’” Weiss laughed. “I said, ‘Yeah, you know, just because I’m transitioning into female doesn’t mean I’m gonna lose interest in everything else.’”

BUILDING A FRAMEWORK

As a moderator of a support and suicide prevention website for transgender people — individuals who identify as a gender different than the one they were assigned at birth — Weiss knew her experience coming out to her co-workers that morning in 2010 wasn’t common.

Over the years, she knew of only one or two city employees who each transitioned quietly, and heard about one in another department who was harassed.

Weiss spent a year crafting a plan to transition on the job with her HR manager and Drian Juarez, the head of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Transgender Economic Empowerment Project.


How about we empower reality?

How about empowering men and women to be comfortable with the parts and the genetics which they are born with?

Where are getting this political insanity from, which forces the rest of the world to accommodate the mental delusions of barely one-half of one percent of the country?

“We wanted to put together something that would be a framework for the future,” Weiss said. “That’s why I wanted to transition at work. I was eligible for retirement, I could’ve just left and then transitioned, but I wanted to stay to help other people who might follow me.”

ADVOCACY MEETS BUSINESS SAVVY

I wonder if this man pretending to be a woman got a pension boost for pretending to be a woman ...

It didn’t take long for Weiss to combine her transgender advocacy with her passion for working with business owners, something she developed during her 12 years at Los Angeles’ Community Development Department.

His! His! His! I do not care how many times he wears a dress, or puts fake breasts, lashes, and other effeminate objects on himself, he is still a he.

Can we please stop accommodating this immoral insanity?

She began giving “Trans 101” presentations to career centers, chambers of commerce and medical students at USC, serving on the city of West Hollywood’s Transgender Advisory Board.

In March, Weiss launched her own consulting practice, Transgender Business Services, offering trainings to help managers throughout Southern California ensure their workplaces are supportive for transgender employees, clients and visitors.

So now we see what is really going on her. He is cashing in on the latest social justice warrior craze. Nothing more.

What a greedy establishment fraud.

She provides guidance on everything from fostering welcoming office environments and writing employee handbooks, to working with staff on interactions with customers.

“I think because, especially in places like California and on the East Coast, trans people are getting more protections, they find it a little easier,” Weiss said of transitioning on the job today. “I think there’s a little less fear than there used to be, but that doesn’t mean the fear is gone away.”

A recent study by the UCLA Williams Institute found there are 1.4 million transgender people in the United States — twice as many as previously thought. And, according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, transgender women made up 55 percent of LGBT homicide victims in 2014.

Well, let's see--a man dresses up as a woman then walks into a bathroom filled with real woman.

How do you think they are going to react?

Ninety percent of transgender people who responded to a national survey reported experiencing harassment, mistreatment or discrimination on the job, and one in four said they lost their jobs because they are transgender.

Of they are being discriminated against! They are embracing a mental disorder.

No one should have to put up with that.

One man wanted to pretend to be a woman and work as a funeral director in Michigan. The employer reuired him--yes, him!--to wear the customary mens' apparel while working there.

He refuse, and sued -- and lost!

I am sure that he is calling that "discrimination."

Well, deal with it!

Transgender people also are twice as likely to face unemployment and four times as likely to face poverty, according to the report.

This matter identifies the fact that they are struggling with deeper mental and emotional problems.

Why does everyong insist on ignoring this? They have problems which need to be addressed. They do not need to pretend that the are women when they are born to be men, or vice versa.

This delusion is become dangerous even fatal for these individuals.

Our country, our government needs to stop appropriating these distortions of male and female.

This political correctness is biologically incorrect.

What about a comfortable enviroment
for everyone else?

And destructive.

Managers need to recognize all forms of discrimination transgender workers can experience, Weiss said, and not just overt ones. That could be anything from purposefully not using proper pronouns, to making jokes in the break room.

And, she said, it’s important to never assume there aren’t transgender people in your workplace.

“You can’t say, ‘Well, I’m a truck driver, I don’t work with a trans person.’ Sorry, but I know at least half a dozen personally who are long-distance truck drivers,” Weiss said, adding that change happens when allies call out transphobia at work.

“It’s always been my belief that the reason there is so much hostility and fear and misunderstanding about trans people is because they’ve never met a trans person, so all they hear is what other people say or they see caricatures on TV,” Weiss said. “That’s not who we are. I am not a caricature.”

What are they really afraid of, these mentally ill individuals who need help? Why are they afraid to rest and be comfortable with their genetic endowments? Why are they ashamed to be men and women?
