Winning! Assisted Suicide Fails in Maryland

Arthur, Legislation in Maryland, which would have permitted physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of drugs to kill terminally-ill patients, was defeated in the Maryland Senate, in a tied vote that fell one short of the majority needed to pass. In spite of the narrow tally (23-23), this vote represents a great victory for sick, poor, and vulnerable people in Maryland, as well as for the pro-life community, both in Maryland and nationally. And, we thank all our readers who both participated in the petition and prayed for this outcome! YOUR signatures and prayers played an essential role in defeating this bill! Before the vote, I was in contact with three Maryland State Senators, including the Senate President -- so, everyone knew about your petition! And, at that time, Senate President Miller was even predicting a narrow passage for the bill (though, in the end, he, himself, did not vote for the measure). But, thank God, it was not meant to be! Sick and vulnerable Marylanders are still safe from being pressurized into taking their lives! Thankfully, there was a lot of local, grassroots opposition to this bill, but national organizations have long targeted Maryland on this issue - trying to get the state to become the seventh in the country to legalize Physician-Assisted Suicide. However, the ramifications of the "choice" propounded by those proposing the legislation were ultimately understood as dangerous and destructive. “Allowing doctors to prescribe lethal doses of addictive drugs with no way to make sure those drugs don't end up in the wrong hands or on our streets is bad policy,” the Maryland Catholic Conference argued. “And there is nothing in this bill to ensure that insurance companies don't deny coverage of life-saving treatments and instead fully pay for these lethal drugs because it's more cost efficient to end life than it is to save it.” As a Marylander, myself, I must tell you that it was a great feeling of relief to see the lives of the vulnerable, the disabled and the poor remain protected by law. However, we need to remain vigilant for next year and the year after. If such legislation were ever passed, there is no reason to assume that Maryland would not become like Holland, where one-in-four of all deaths are now induced by so-called ‘medical professionals.’ A 'euthanasia culture' obviously causes more people to want to die, as well as probably a lot of lazy, indifferent, and downright bloody-minded medical treatment. This is not something we want in Maryland (or, any other state, for that matter). So, we will continue to oppose this kind of legislation, both, here, nationally and internationally. When the Grassroots Defeat the Machine: Hawaii and Maryland

Voters, pundits, political wonks are in many cases convinced that the ordinary guy on the street cannot fight city hall.

In city councils when the presiding officer becomes rude or hostile, there is no nee to stay silent and put up with it, either!

So, how else have we seen We the People take on the Democratic hegemony in other states and WIN

Let's see what happened in Hawaii.

Unlike California, where assisted suicide legislation passed despite some strong pro-family resistance, Hawaii's ultra-Democratic legislature killed the policy possibility.

Citing a “lack of specifics” and the absence of safeguards to protect vulnerable people, the seven-member Hawaii House Health Committee tabled a “Death with Dignity” bill.

Thursday’s conclusion in the committee on the Senate Bill 1129 was exactly the opposite of the state Senate’s embrace of the “Medical Aid in Dying Bill” where it passed easily. The vote came two days after supporters and opponents testified for three hours.

Just like in California, the state assembly has been the house of opposition to these far-left proposals. Keep in mind that there are only five Republicans in the State General Assembly, while at this time there are no Republicans at all in the Hawaii State Senate.

That's how badly disorganized the conservative opposition has become in the Aloha State! The Republican Party is falling apart and cannot stand its ground at all. The leaders have even told their members and inferior county leaders not to take clear stances on any issues at all.

Is it any surprise that Hawaii Republicans are not taking over the state legislature?

Assisted suicide has fallen into legislative limbo in another blue state: Maryland.

The physician assisted suicide bill was withdrawn from the Senate. That means the bill is dead this year. The House bill will not move out of committee if the senate bill did not get any traction this year.

I fully expect this bill to be back next year.

Keep in mind--this is deep blue Maryland, where Republican registration dwarfs California.

But the movement in house and throughout the state was strong enough to stop this attack in life.

There are more reasons to rejoice in Maryland, too, standing up to the left and stopping destructive, anti-conservative, anti-liberty policies. How about sanctuary state policies? How have they turned out in other states? Are they getting clear and convincing passage of any kind?

Did you know that Maryland was flirting with legislation to turn the Old Line State into a sanctuary state?

Yes! Check it out below, from the Washington Times:

A proposal to turn Maryland into a “sanctuary state” by limiting local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities died in the State House on Monday after lawmakers withdrew the bill — which had garnered a veto threat from the governor and a rebuke from Trump administration Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The pressure from the federal government but also from the Republican governor clearly drew a line in the sand for the legislature.

But that was not all. After all, legislatures can override a veto. Check out what the legal immigrants, many of whom were registered Democrats, did to stop sanctuary state Maryland:

Legal immigrants helped to defeat a bill that would have made Maryland a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants, says the New York Times, which admitted their “voices have rarely been heard in the long debate over how to fix the nation’s immigration system.”

Notice why they raised their voices against this terrible bill:

Foreign-born Maryland residents who worked hard to become law-abiding, U.S. residents were particularly incensed by the bill. The Times notes that supporters of the sanctuary bill had labeled them as “white-collar professionals whose personal struggles could not compare” with illegal aliens. 

That really bothers people, doesn't it? "I worked hard to enter this country legally, and now you want to protect people who broke into our country?!"

It is offensive, but it also shows the power of the grassroots to stop bad legislation, even in deep blue states.

We in California are working very hard to ensure that California does not go sanctuary. From the southern border all the way to Ukiah, men and women who demand the rule of law in the Golden State will not rest. We have harassed and harangued our legislature to stop these terrible bills.

Assisted suicide passed because the lawmakers called a snap special session, which caught activists like me off guard. Not anymore! No sanctuary state, no single-payer.

Preliminary Thoughts on Hadley for Governor

So ...

David Hadley is thinking about running for governor.

I shared the information with the public that he is running.

Here are my thoughts about his bid for Governor at this time.

SacBee said he voted with the Democrats 70% of the time.

But this is a specious argument, since the process for tallying bills as Democratic or Republican is very shady.

David Hadley did the following things that were GREAT:

1. AB 306--allow school choice for military families.

2. AB 803 (which never passed, sadly) -- legislation which would allow communities of interest to form their own school districts at a faster rate.

3. He voted against SB 1146 -- Kill Christian Colleges

4. He voted against SB 227, forced vaccinations.

5. He voted against every single tax increase, including the MCO tax hike shuffle.

6. He voted against decriminalizing child prostitution, too.

7. He worked very hard to gut SB 350 -- then he voted for it (because he had gutted it to a much less harmful version)

8. He helped pass civil asset forfeiture reform SB 443, which was dead on arrival without his help in the state assembly.

9. He had a so-so record on Second Amendment. NRA gave him a C+. That's better than most coastal representatives, who are very liberal.

BAD THINGS:

1. He voted for SB 10 -- allow illegal aliens to purchase health insurance on the Obamacare state exchange---this law issued a waiver to the President to allow illegals on--but it went nowhere, since State Senator Ricardo Lara pulled it following Trump's Election win.

He also supports drivers licenses for illegal aliens. This is bad. Very bad.

2. He voted for assisted suicide --this was a gut blow. It made me sick (but not as much as SB 10 was).

3. He refused to support Donald Trump, which I think still rankles with the Republican base that he depends on to be competitive statewide.

Reflection

At this time, David Hadley is not my first choice, just as Donald Trump was not my first choice.

If he can do a better job than most, and bring real sanity back to California (I want more than just balance), then I would be thrilled.

As of now, I am biding my time.
