Breaking News: FPPC Investigation of Aurelio Mattucci Recall Underway

Torrance resident Patsy Okada has filed a complaint with the FPPC in connection with Jean Adelsman's recall effort against Torrance City Councilman and City Treasurer candidate Aurelio Mattucci.

This is a significant development, since the FPPC receives between 1,000 and 2,000 complaints each year. Patsy's complaint was accepted!

I received the following text message from Patsy, which she had received from Bob Habel, one of the Torrance Parks and Recreation Commissioners, who organized the failed recall effort against Torrance City Councilman Jon Kaji:

Here's the full message, if you cannot read the text in the picture:

Thanks [sic] you. The names will not appear in the Breeze because we are just going to scare him into that we are going to recall him. After we gather the necessary signatures, we turn them into the city clerk, she verifies that they are valid. Then we can pay someone to serve him that he is being recalled. That is where it ends. Names and addresses will not appear in the paper. It's not going to go that far. Once he is served, he will know that District 1 people are not happy with him. There is no lawyer with the Kaji recall. I don't know who Jean is using for the Mattucci recall.

So, the Kaji recall effort was a hoax.

What about the Mattucci recall?

Patsy shared the following with me:

My complaint was 99% from Jean Adelsman’s newsletters. But in the newsletters Jean asked for donations for the recall. FPPC jurisdiction is money involved in an election/recall.

In case anyone has forgotten, Jean Adelsman was one of the key organizers of the Mattucci recall. She asked for donations!

She was the biggest cheerleader, outlining all the reasons why Mattucci "needed" to be recalled.

She did have a considerable role in the recall effort:

A few personal points: I am No. 39 out of the 60. If the recall succeeds, I will not seek the seat. I ran in 2022 because, at that moment, no one else was prepared to oppose Mattucci. Some excellent candidates have already indicated that they would be available to fill the seat in 2024. I am neither chair nor treasurer. I am serving as the committee’s communications director.

She frequently promoted the donation links for the recall effort, too.

Newsletter 46

Newsletter 47

Newsletter 49

Was the Mattucci effort just another bluff? If so, why raise money for it? If the circulators had no intention of actually collecting enough signatures to put a recall measure on the ballot, why fundraise?

Pasty shared with me:

I got the financial disclosure for this recall and I used it as an exhibit.  The treasurer of the recall is Evelyn Smith, and Marilyn Bailey is the state measure proponent. Also, Jean was interviewed by the Daily Breeze when the recall ended . The reporter asked her how many signatures were collected, and she wouldn’t answer. I gave that as an exhibit.

I contacted the City Clerk for more information regarding who initiated the recall, and here's what she shared with me:

The legal publication lists Mary A. Bailey, Mathilde F. Terre, and Marla Shwarts.

YIKES!

Where Are You, Dishonest Jean?

"Recall Mattucci ... PLEASE!
Is anyone out there?"

The Recall against Aurelio Mattucci started January 17th, 2024.

That's what Jean told us.

And ... what?

Did she lie again, as he has a habit of lying about other things?

There have been no canvassers so far in District Five.

There have been no door-knockers asking residents to sign the recall effort.

A number of Torrance residents have shared with me that they have not seen anyone standing in front of the local grocery stores to sign up people to recall Mattucci, either.

Where are you, Jean?

Did you realize that this was a bad idea the moment that you launched this failed effort?

Did you get cold feet once the public, including yours truly, exposed you for lying to District Five residents?

Did residents get cold feet about getting signatures for a a very controversial recall when people realized that you had nothing true to say about the current city council?

Was it the fact that people don't like brazen hypocrisy, since you sent your entire campaign during Election 2022 against recalling George Gascon, then turned around and announced your support for recalling Aurelio Mattucci?

Seriously, Jean?

Aren't you embarrassed at this point?

You have lied enough, and people have had enough of your lies.

You lost, lose gracefully, and just move on.

SAY THEIR NAMES: Torrance Residents who Signed Aurelio Mattucci Recall

So, former reporter/editor/loser candidate Jean Adelsman cannot accept that she lost an election fair and square.

She campaigned against the Recall of LA County DA George Gascon. When she lost her bid for city council in 2022, she pledged not to initiate a recall against Aurelio Mattucci.

Yet here we are today, and Jean is trying to collect signature to put a recall measure on the ballot for District Five voters.

Why does she want to get rid of Aurelio?

Well, we all know it's spite, pure and simple. She is making excuses about the LA Metro and statements from the city councilman to justify removing him from office.

What is really alarming is that there are 60+ people in the district who want him gone. (Or do they? More to follow. Some reports claim that some of the residents below really had no idea what they were signing. Other reports suggest that Jean lied to these voters, claiming that Aurelio wanted to defund the police)

So, who signed off on the initial intent to recall? Jean needed to get 60 signatures, or 60 electors (voters) in Torrance City Council District Five.

She obtained 68 signatures, presumably anyone who initiates a recall has to collect more than the minimum, just in case some of the signatures don't match the names, the addresses, etc.

Here are the pages. For your convenience, I have re-typed the names beneath each page, and for the privacy of each voter, I have blocked out their home addresses.

There are a couple of names which I could not decipher based on the poor printing of the initial electors who signed the first intent to recall.

If I could not read the names, how could the city clerk?

The partisan breakdown of the names who signed the initial intent to recall is:

56 Democrats

1 Green Party Member

2 No Party Preference

7 Republicans

Why 7 Republicans would sign this recall intent is a mystery, since Aurelio is also a registered Republican.

Dishonest Jean Adelsman Lies Again: Intent to Recall is PUBLIC Info

In Dishonest Jean Adelsma's latest post "Take Back Torrance," (which should be called "Make Torrance Great for Jean"), she asserts that residents can sign recall papers to have Councilman Mattucci put up for a recall vote and ultimately removed from office.

AND she asserts that their signatures will be private.

That is yet another lie from Dishonest Jean Adelsman.

Yes, it is public information.

Yes, your name, address, and signature will be made public.

Yes, all that information is available via public records request.

I filed a Public Records Request with the city, and the clerk provided me all 68 signatures of the people who wanted to initiate a recall vote against Councilman Mattucci.

HERE'S THE FIRST PAGE ...

I have blocked out the addresses of the electors who signed the recall papers, but here are their names and their signatures.

The three people who signed the first page of the intent to recall posted above are:

Mary Bailey

Mathilde Terre

Marla Shwarts

Yes, it is public information, and once again, Dishonest Jean gets exposed for the liar that she is.

UPDATE:

Just in case Jean Adelsman tries to cover her tracks and claim that she NEVER said that anyone, I am posting her entire newsletter from January 17, 2024:

Loser Jean Adelsman: Lying Hypocrite, Sore Loser (Trump Wannabe?)

Jean Adelsman ran against incumbent Torrance city councilman Aurelio Mattucci in 2022. She was the liberal candidate who pretended to be "bipartisan." She called herself "purple" on her website.

Of course, she lost. She's not on the city council dias today (thank goodness!)

She attempted to play nice shortly after the election, even reaching out to Aurelio briefly to have coffee with him.

That obviously went nowhere.

But she doesn't want to go away ...

Here we are now. Jean wants to recall Aurelio ... and Jon Kaji, too?

Why, now?

She and other wagging tongues in town say that it's due to Kaji and Mattuci's opposition to extending the LA Metro into Torrance. But let's get serious about this: they don't like the fact that a more conservative, a more principled set of politicos is now serving the city on the city council.

That bothers them.

They don't like the fact that the current mayor didn't kiss all the brass rings, from commissions to public sector unions, to become the next mayor of the city. He didn't go through the usual "Torrance Way" to become the next head of state for the city.

The same thing applies to Kaji, of course. He didn't kiss rings and glad-hand the "Good Ol' Boys" in Torrance in order to get elected. That bothers some people in The Balanced City.

It seems to bother Jean, as well.

But what about Aurelio? Why don't they like him? He did sit on commissions, and he participated in a number of city events. He even took pictures with local Congressmen Henry Waxman and Maxine Waters at one time.

They don't like that he speaks his mind, and that he wants--and gets--results. He has certainly disrupted business as usual, and he does not "play nice" with some people.

All of these reasons are not reasons at all. They are embittered excuses from sore losers who don't like the fact that creeping liberalism, and big-spending wastrelism are no longer the order of the day. One can be sure that the local Democratic Party is all over this, too. Jimmy Gow got stomped on--TWICE--after spending time and money and collecting every endorsement from every who's-who in the LA County Democrat zoo.

He even posted non-stop about me on the Torrance Democratic Club Facebook page last year!

(This photo is one of my favorites!:)

Now, what is it about Jean Adelsman that makes her a lying hypocrite?

One of the voters in District Five made it plain as day:

Jean didn't support the recall of pro-criminal district attorney George Gascon becqause "she didn't believe in recalls." Now she suddenly believes in recalls? Really?

And she says that part of the reason for the recall is that Aurelio and others are opposing the extension of the LA Metro into Torrance. For the record, I confess that I supported this move, and did nothing it would be a big deal to have an extension of the metro rail from Redondo Beach to Torrance. But five years later, and with the rising crime, and the worsening conditions on the LA Metro, the fact that the Board of Supervisors have removed heavy police presence to protect riders on the Metro, and the fact that fewer people are using public transit, I am now inclined to oppose it.

So, Jean wants the LA Metro, she seems so upset about the current council opposing its extension.

And yet ...

Pamela Combar calls out Jean Adelsman for not even showing up to ANY OF THE MEETINGS on the proposed extension!

In short, Jean is making up excuses. She is a lying hypocrite and a sore (liberal) loser who can't stand the fact that she got beat by a stronger candidate who, despite almost every political force against him, prevailed in his re-election bid.

You know, for a lady who hates Trump so much, she is sure starting to sound a like like him,

She lost by a very slim margin in 2022, just as Trump did because of slim margins in key states in 2020.

She is belly-aching about losing, the same way she bellyaches about Trump, who contested his loss in 2020.

She is trying to overturn a legitimate election, and yet she criticizes Trump for doing the same thing regarding Election 2020 (for the record, it do believe that the election was stolen, but a big part of it was his own fault. See here).

She is all in on big government transportation projects, just like Trump.

She is talking about "Take Back Torrance," kind of like how Trump campaigned on "Make America Great Again." But she wants to take us backwards! Does she want Don Wilson to redline housing, too?

She is connecting with the previous Democratic establishment, the same way that Democrats have tried to attach themselves to Trump, who was connected with Democrat politicians for years. She wants to reach out to both sides, all while upsetting the Republican base. Trump wanted to make deals with both sides, he has upset his Republican base, too.

But the big thing is that she is staging an "insurrection" against city hall and trying to remove two duly, lawfully elected people from Torrance city council. It sure sounds like Trump when he shouted "Fight Like Hell!" on January 6th, 2021, but a handul of Antifa miscreants broke windows and assaulted police officers.

Still, the fact that she can't give up complaining aout losing ... yet at the same time she thinks Donald Trump lost and shouldn't complain at all. Wow, how the tables have turned in Torrance!

Stop LA County Board of Supervisors Power Grab: Vote NO on Measure A

Sheriff Alex Villanueva is sounding the alarm on the LA County Board of Supervisors' latest power grab.

The County board wants to take away from the voters the final say on who serves as their Sheriff. It's really disgusting. What Measure A aims to do is give the LA County BOS the power to remove and replace the sheriff in a "veto power, recall power" shuffle.

This power grab is a palpable, unconstitutional affront to the power of the people, and we the people need to stop it at all costs.

Here's Sheriff Villanueva's announcement about stopping Measure A:

Brian Dahle for Congress (?)

Brian Dahle

Let's face some hard facts:

California State Senate Minority Brian Dahle is not going to be the next governor of California. The voters turned down a recall effort against incumbent Governor Gavin Newoms last year by 2-to-1. It was just so discouraging. Newsom has the backing of very major political interest, and the woke cult has such a stronghold on so many voters in the state.

So, why is Dahle running for Governor?

He is propping up his bid for higher office, i.e. Congress, when CA-01 House Rep. Doug LaMalfa resigns, retires, etc., or Dahle will go after a seat on the Board of Equalization once Ted Gaines terms out.

That's what swampy Republicans in the California State Legislature do. They are not interested in saving the state. Most of them do not speak up to stop bad legislation during the legislative session, even. They make no efforts to improve the well-being and quality of life for California residents. They don't care because they don't have to. They show up, cast their votes, collect their paycheck, then prep for higher office or local office or set up their consulting firms once they term out.

They are looking to hold onto whatever political power is available to them or make whatever money they can, including running for whatever higher office may be available to them in the near future.

How has the Dahle for Governor campaign spent its money?

Campaign Consultant Josh Cook  $115,000  (Cook is also the Senator Dahle Chief of Staff)

The consultant gets 10% of campaign take. Wow!

Slate cards    $256,000

Where does he plan on sending the slates? Orange County?

Other consultants:

Matt Shupe (Contra Costa GOP Chair)  $7500

Call to Action Consulting (a Redding firm)  $10,000

Fortune Masters Group—also from Redding    $10,000

Farah Farr Consulting   $7421

Janessa Zimmerman   $5500

You have five other consultants listed. FIVE! What's this all about?

It's all about feathering the nests of the permanent minority of failure that runs the CAGOP.

Notice again how consultants have taken over as chairmen for key committees throughout the state. The activists and the grassroots voters do not run things in the California GOP. It's all run by a receding number of well-connected political technicians and wonks who just want to cash a check. They don't care about California. They don't care about the voters. They only care about their nest-egg and their next real estate investment (or the next campaign gig, or they next bid for higher office, etc.)

Julie Haff—LAGOP Treasurer/Executive Director   $4500

Lo and behold, even the Los Angeles County GOP is moving in on the money, too! Now we know how they are managing to keep the lights on for the otherwise abandoned LAGOP Central Committee.

I have looked at Republican State Party programs, platforms, and apparatus in the other states, and it just excites me and depresses me all at once. Florida, Iowa, even Rhode Island and Maine, have active state parties that are looking forward to taking back territory and winning seats in the state legislature or Congress!

And what about California? It's just a sad decline of excuses and corporate payoffs. A handful of people get rich, and the rest of the state suffers. It's almost as though the Democrats have fully infiltrating the California Republican Party to ensure nothing but controlled opposition comes out of them.

Brian Dahle is running for Congress or the Board of Equalization down the line, and in the meantime he is propping up a host of consultants and campaign vendors to keep them happy, so that he can take advantage of them for his next political push. What a let-down.

Rest After the Recall

Gavin Newsom won.

The recall lost.

I lost, too.

Or, did I lose, really? In the end, this is a loss for the other voters in the state of California. This is not a loss for me in the long run. There is so much injustice in the state of California, and yet for all of it, none of it has held me back.

In the long run, I feel that this is a win. I can finally let go, stop trying, stop striving to save this state that does not want to be saved.

I must say, I had a sinking feeling, based on all the continuing polls, that the recall would fail.

There was a smaller sense of sorrow yesterday, when the recall failed. I was not devastated, and I was prepared for this worst outcome.

A day later, it is crystal clear to me who the problem really is: it's the voters themselves.

The vast majority of voters in the state of California, Democrat and Republican, are the problem.

Democrats are voting for their progressive delusional cult. Republicans did not turn out to vote for the recall. Yes, there was voter fraud, no doubt about it, and it would be good to see what those results would be in a comprehensive audit.

Still, for all the pretenses, the fact is that a new religion has clearly overtaken the state of California: The Cult of the Woke.

And they are as asleep as ever. It's pretty sad, very distressing to see how far the Golden State has fallen. But the worshipped the Gold, and not the God who made the temple.

For years, I have been fighting the cultural scourge that was so common, so prevalent in this state. For the last ten years, I have been working, volunteering, active in GOP circles to fight back against the moral rot that has overtaken this state.

And it has really come to naught. Yes, I have witnessed victories here and there at the local level, and for two years, a Republican did represent me in the state assembly. But that joy was short-lived, and even then, that Republican failed in all too many cases, even voting to allow illegal aliens to purchase health insurance in the Covered California Obamacare health exchanges.

What a shameful crock.

The state GOP and the county GOP have been worse than complete failures. They have been complicit in the liberal corruption which has overrun the state. Many of them were Democrats at one time, and they ran for the GOP seats because the Democrats are too full.

The people of the state of California hate God, they hate the truth, and they are holding to their Jim Jones-like hold onto Democratic policies, and they must reject Republicans in particular and republicanism in general. There is no talking to people in bondage to a cult.

I don't feel bad about accepting the sad reality of all of this, and I do not feel bad about giving up at this point. California voters are rejecting what I believe. They are not rejecting me. They are rejecting God, they are rejecting Christ Jesus, and they are rejecting His grace.

I am giving up because they are not worth the effort. It's their fault, not mine. I have nothing to lose. I did my part. I have done my part. They didn't choose the candidates I support, and it's their fault. Not mine. There is nothing wrong with what I believe. It's their problem.

It's not me, it's you, California. It's not loss for me. I am not going to waste my time anymore. You are not worth the effort.

"7And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them." (1 Samuel 8:7)

It's your loss, California, not mine! I tried to warn you that going down the path of the same statist, status quo was going to hurt you, but you chose not to listen:

"19Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles." (1 Samuel 8:18-19)

Of course, the first king that God selected for the Israelites was Saul, and he was a failure. David would follow, and he was one of the greatest kings, and yet even he failed.

The Israelites would continue their descent into idol worship and debauchery.

Then came the vision which the prophet Isaiah received, in which he asked how long he would have to prophesy to the people, and they would not listen.

God gave a stern, dour answer:

"11Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,

"12And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.

"13But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof." (Isaiah 6:11-13)

That's where California is. I have warned Californians, and many others have done the same. But the vast majority of the voters in the state of California today do not want to listen. They have not suffered enough. They are fat, proud, thick in their minds and their hearts.

Sadly, they will suffer greatly for these failures. But it's on them. It's not my fault. It's not my problem, and I am not going to worry about it anymore.

California, I am going to rest. I worked as much as I could, and you choose to lose. It's on you at this point.

09/16/21 UPDATE:

Because I now choose to rest, God can now work. Our frustrating efforts to make things right only frustrate God's working in us, for He is willing in us both to will and to do for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). God has not given up on the world yet. His Son has not returned yet with a rod of iron to rule the nations.

It's time for me to trust Him to make things work for good. There is indeed a real rest for me. Lord, You've got this! I am going to let you take over. Jesus, You are at work and you are making all things work together for good. (Romans 8:28).

I am giving up, so that God can take over fully.

Brainwashed: Average California Voter

The recall vote came and went.

Gavin prevailed. I kind of figured that that would happen.

Polling had consistently shown that most of the voters were ready to keep Gavin, even though he had put the state through some of the worst policy destructions imagineable.

This state is the first in the worst metrics, including homelessness, cost of housing, cost of living, etc.

Then again, I also kind of expected that many of the voters would go alone with King Gavin, regardless.

Here's a picture of one of his supporters:

This video contains an "interview" with your average California voter, when I was collecting signatures to recall the foolish governor:

The guy is so bought into the false rhetoric and fake news which is endemic in our corporate media. He pretty much defended Gavin Newsom.

Notice also that he refused to tell me whether he really had a job or not. He also thought he was really smart, witty even because he kept pointing out that this is the year 2021, even though the recall effort had begun in 2020, and therefore that's why a number of the banners read "Recall Gavin 2020."

He also lectured me at length about wearing a mask. By what authority? For what reason? When I finally pressed him: "Go ahead and call the police," it shut him up.

You can't argue with someone when you are powerless to stop them from doing whatever they are doing.

In the final part of this "interview," I decided to talk over this empty man. He is clearly unable to think, clearly unable to reason. He thinks that he is the smartest guy in the parking lot, and therefore there is no talking to him.

There you have your average California voter. This is what has happened in the state of California. People are decrepit, worn out, with no skills, no capacities beyond depending on the government to take care of them. Notice the high-powered scooter he was using to get around. Does it really seem as if the guy needed that scooter? And why is he smoking? And why is he given into all of these lies about "politician" Gavin, when in reality he has made himself a king?

The average California voter does not think, but has given into the Gavin Newsom cult of the regressive left. I met it face to face in February, 2021--and now here we are in mid-September, and Gavin has bested the recall effort. No surprise, but great disappointment, to be sure.

Keith Hardine: The People of California Want a King

From the Desk of Constitutional Self-Defense Expert Keith Hardine:

“But when they [the People] said, ‘Give us a king to lead us,’ this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.” 1 Samuel 8:6-8, NIV

Breitbart’s JOEL B. POLLAK on September 14 wrote: Newsom ran against “Trumpism” [THE CONSTITUTION] and Republican caricatures, which proved enough to carry the day handsomely.

With recall defeated, Democrats are already discussing ways to shut the door on future recalls, debating ways to reform a process that was established over a century ago in the original “Progressive” era as a last resort to ensure accountability.

And this is what king Newsom who prevailed over the Recall thanks to the People of California, has claimed as his right to rule:

Life in California under Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom by Randy Thomasson of SaveCalifornia.

1. One-third of California restaurants were permanently closed in 2020-2021
Thousands of Californians have their jobs just because they don't want the "jab"

2. He sided with anti-family teachers' unions, not science, to keep schools closed

3. Millions of children are being unnecessarily masked for several hours each day

4. Children in government schools are being sexually indoctrinated all the more

5. Preborn babies are even more in danger of losing their God-given right to life

6. Tens of thousands of convicts -- including violent criminals -- have been released

7. Convicted murderers -- who forced victims to lose their lives -- won't lose their own

8. Water has been released, wasted, and prohibited without building new dams

9. $150 million has been siphoned away from the state's fire protection budget

10. California wilderness has 163 million dead trees, providing explosive wildfire fuel

11. Homelessness and transient crimes have skyrocketed, endangering families

12. $30 BILLION In fraudulent payments have been made by the Governor's EDD

13. California has abnormally high gas taxes and regulations driving up prices

14. We no longer are a "government of the people, by the people, for the people"

So the question for the People of California was, would you "hire" Gavin Newsom again by voting "no," or will you "fire" him by voting "yes," in the September 14 Recall Election?

THE PEOPLE’S ANSWER WAS—give us a tyrannical king (Governor) to continue his rule over us!

Desperation? Gay State Assemblyman Posts on Grindr to Try to Stop California Recall

Wow! Is this desperation or what? Asm. Evan Low (D-Campbell) has restored to trawling gay hook-up sites in order to push for "No to Recall Gavin Newsom." This is sickening. This is sad. One would think that legislators would have enough sense and self-respect not to sell themselves on a website in order to stop a legislative proposal or a policy.

And yet lo and behold, Asm. Evan Low descends to yet a newer low to push for voters to stop the recall of the worst governor in the United States, Gavin "Pelosi" Newsom.

SAD!

Equality California Panicking about California Recall

Arthur,

CBS News just published a brand new poll for the Republican Recall in California… and it’s NOT looking good:

CBS News / YouGov Poll

“Will you definitely vote in this recall election?”

Trump 2020 Voters: 86% YES
Biden 2020 Voters: 75% YES

Trump voters are more than 10% MORE likely to vote in this recall than Biden voters.

That’s why Equality California is launching a massive statewide get-out-the-vote campaign to mobilize pro-equality voters ahead of this Republican Recall.

We need grassroots funders! Will you donate $15 (or more!) today to power this GOTV campaign?

This is a critical moment for California, Arthur. In 2003, apathy from progressive voters allowed a Democratic governor to be recalled -- for only the second time in US history.

We’re not about to let history repeat itself this year.

Because if we lose this recall vote, we could get a governor who:

  1. Has a vile history of opposing LGBTQ+ equality;
  2. Wants to ban mask mandates and is proudly anti-vaccine;
  3. Supports gutting the minimum wage, gun regulations and Roe v. Wade.

The stakes are high -- and we’re leaving NOTHING on the table. Let’s not wake up on September 15th with any regrets.

Donate whatever you can to help us turn out pro-equality voters NOW:

https://go.eqca.org/a/Donate

We can win this, together.

If You Recall Them, They Will Resign

Carlsbad City Council member facing recall resigns

CARLSBAD — Carlsbad City Councilwoman Cori Schumacher, whose opponents say they have enough signatures to place her recall on the ballot, announced her resignation Friday morning. It was effective immediately.

She ran away. GOOD!

“I have chosen to attend a university outside the county of San Diego,” Schumacher said in response to emailed questions about her decision. “It’s an opportunity I simply cannot refuse. Unfortunately, this means that I am no longer able to continue my role as council member.”

Schumacher declined to answer questions about the recall or about her continuing conflicts with a few vocal residents and conservative elected officials. Instead, she emphasized the City Council’s accomplishments since she was first elected in 2016, including the launch of a Clean Energy Alliance, the city’s first lifeguard program, and an expanded homeless response program.

Proponents of the recall needed about 3,700 signatures to force the election and had collected more than enough when she resigned, said Carl DeMaio, a former San Diego City Council member and chairman of the political group Reform California that launched the effort.

“Today is a big win for the citizens of Carlsbad and removes a toxic presence from Carlsbad city government,” DeMaio said in a news release.

“Schumacher and her special interest political backers had the same polling we had and they knew they could not survive this recall election, so they smartly opted to throw in the towel just days before we were expected to submit our signatures,” he said. “As of our campaign’s last count, our team of grassroots volunteers had collected nearly 4,500 signatures and we were just gathering extra signatures for a safety margin.”

One of the reasons for the recall effort was Schumacher’s decision to file restraining orders against three Carlsbad residents, one of whom has since moved away, who frequently criticize her council actions in social media and at public meetings. A judge dismissed her complaints and order her to pay court costs.

Her critics also took aim at her efforts to have the city strictly enforce COVID-19 public safety protocols, which some elected officials said were unnecessarily harming small businesses. Another criticism was her support for regional efforts to expand public transportation systems.

“The outcome of our recall campaign should send a clear message to other local politicians that they will be held accountable for their misconduct in office and for their extreme positions on important issues,” DeMaio said.

Schumacher was elected to a four-year, at-large City Council seat in 2016. She ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2018, which was the first year the city held an election for the newly created council District 1 in which she lives.

Barbara Hamilton won the District 1 seat, and as a result Schumacher would have been ineligible to run for re-election in 2020 in the district where she lives. However, Hamilton resigned early in the first year of her term, and Schumacher won a special election held to fill the vacancy.

Now, with a little over one year left in the District 1 term, the council could hold another special election or appoint someone to the new vacancy.
