The Josh Newman recall was a full-on success.

It would be great to see a whole-sale repeal of the other disastrous programs, too.

The water rationing legislation is especially bad.

I spoke with contacts in the Carl DeMaio repeal/recall effort, and they are still reeling from the victory just four days ago.

Not just repealing bad laws, it would be great to see more recalls of bad politicians who sold us all out for higher gas taxes and car fees.

The White House: Ignore Spin on Tax Cuts, Let's Rebuild American Infrastructure

The White House press releases and correspondence deliver the news that the liberal mainstream media refuse to talk about. 

In spite of the hectic, relentlessly negative spin, the truth is that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is working. It is working for working Americans as well as major companies expanding their operations, hiring more workers, getting more goods and services to an economic which struggled through epic stagnation under 8 years of the Obama Administration.

Tax cuts, wage hikes, bonuses, all of this has rolled out because of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Way to Go, President Trump and GOP Majority!

In other news, President Trump is gearing up to get a bipartisan infrastructure bill passed through Congress. Even my Congressman, Lyin' Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), is on board for this proposal. Democrats cannot deny that they want to spend more federal tax dollars. President Trump is promoting this proposal to look like Big Government boondoggles, but in fact the federal government will invest a small portion while inducing the states to provide the rest.

That's the way it should be. I would like the larger bill to include amendments which restore states' rights and responsibilities over their individual roads, waterways, bridges, highways, etc. Why not provide incentives for states which privatize the operation and upkeep of their public highways and byways, too? Indiana has been doing that for the last eight years, for example, saving the state millions of dollars. This proposal is necessary and noteworthy, too, because high-tax, low-service states like California could not depend on federal tax dollars for their infrastructure.

When James Inhofe and Sheldon Whitehouse agree on something, you know that the legislation.

Results drown out spin 
On January 11, less than three weeks after President Donald J. Trump signed the most sweeping tax overhaul in American history, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) labeled the benefits that American workers are seeing as “crumbs.”

That comment hasn’t aged well. According to a New York Times poll conducted by SurveyMonkey this month, a majority of Americans approve of the tax law signed by President Trump in December. There is little mystery why. As of this week, 377 companies have announced worker bonuses, raises, or 401(k) boosts as a result of tax cuts, according to the nonprofit Americans for Tax Reform.

Even some Democrats are breaking from Rep. Pelosi’s line. “I wouldn't say a couple thousand dollars a year is ‘crumbs,’” Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) said. He’s exactly right.

More Democrats should take note: On tax cuts, Americans believe results more than spin.

The Trump Administration is making a strong showing this week at the Conservative Political Action Conference’s 2018 annual meeting. The lineup includes Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, Budget Director Mick Mulvaney, and other senior Administration officials.

Today, President Trump joins that list with a keynote address to the conference.

“I stand here today with profound gratitude to say that because of all of you, because of the conservative majorities in Congress that you helped elect, and because of the strong leadership of the President you put in the White House, 2017 was the most consequential year in the history of the conservative movement,” Vice President Pence told CPAC attendees yesterday.

“And tomorrow, you’ll hear firsthand from the man who galvanized that movement.”

Bipartisan support builds for the President’s infrastructure plan 
Two senators from opposite sides of the aisle—Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)—took to The Wall Street Journal this week to join the President’s call for a bipartisan infrastructure bill.

“During his State of the Union address, President Trump called for a broad bipartisan infrastructure package, pledging to improve the nation’s infrastructure and invest in the future,” the pair wrote. “We know that it can, and will, happen.”

The senators are right—and most Americans agree. According to a new Rasmussen Reports poll, 65 percent of likely voters favor President Trump’s bold plan to rebuild American infrastructure. That plan starts with getting Washington out of the way.“Americans should welcome news that President Trump has included regulatory streamlining in his infrastructure proposal,” the editorial board of The Oklahomanwrites.

This afternoon, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will welcome Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mrs. Turnbull of Australia to the White House. The two leaders will meet before participating in a working lunch, and later hold a joint press conference. In the afternoon, the President will meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Today, Vice President Pence and the Second Lady will host a luncheon for members of the National Governors Association. The Vice President will later participate in a meeting with Prime Minister Turnbull.

Governor LePage’s State of the State Address This Tuesday, Governor LePage delivered his final State of the State speech. Our Governor discussed his tax cuts, welfare reforms, and elimination of harmful regulations, among other policy achievements. He also reiterated that he won’t expand Medicaid unless the legislature comes up with the money to pay for it. He also discussed policies he is pushing this year to help those in need, use taxpayer money wisely, and continue improving Maine’s economy. Thank you, Governor, you will be dearly missed. But fortunately the Maine GOP has several strong candidates running for Governor to carry on your legacy. YOU CAN WATCH OUR GOVERNOR'S FULL SPEECH HERE Congressman Poliquin Applauds New Timber Production Facility We learned this week there will be a new timber production facility in Millinocket that could create more than 100 new jobs. Congressman Poliquin praised the announcement, stating: Maine’s working forests provide for tens of thousands of jobs across our State and are a key part of Maine’s economy. I have met with numerous forest products groups to discuss cross-laminated timber and how this technology could greatly help our State’s forest products industry. I am thrilled to hear today’s announcement and am grateful Maine’s sustainable working forests will continue to provide for many more jobs in our State in the coming years. LePage Legacy on Welfare Reform One of Governor LePage’s greatestt accomplishments has been welfare reform. Since he took office, the number of jobs has increased dramatically more as the of working-age adults on welfare has shrunk. Mainers of nearly all political stripes value work. Deep down we all know we must prioritize taxpayer-funded welfare dollars on people in desperate need, while moving all of our able-bodied to become self-sufficient and even prosperous. ‌

Ronald Reagan’s 107th Birthday--Why Are We Still Celebrating?

After receiving three different emails to sign a card celebrating Ronald Reagan’s 107^th Birthday, I asked myself: “Why are we still celebrating the Gipper?” He was a great President, but is the icon turning into a crutch for hiding from the fights of today? The issue is a two-sided question. Indeed, Reagan’s legacy offers a lot for us to rejoice about, but also to ponder and reconsider. He represented the seemingly contradictory conservative change agent in a time when Americans were ready for anything after four years of economic malaise, cultural chaos, and political depression.  His victories for conservatism are considerable, but if he’s an example to follow, there’s so much more to consider besides what he did.

Why Should We Celebrate Reagan Still Today?

The background for President Reagan’s rise, setback, ascent, and legacy go as follows. Ronnie had run briefly in 1968, but party bosses decided “Nixon’s the one.” In Election 1976, Reagan had wrapped up two terms as governor to challenge politically-damaged Gerald Ford. The former House minority leader signed off on Richard Nixon’s pardon, and was punished in the short term, although historians and politicos acknowledge that this first major order spared the country further disarray.

Then just like now, the internal fighting within the GOP focused on how consistently to contend for limited government and individual liberty, both at home and abroad. Liberal Republicans embraced Big Government entitlements, while the more conservative faction wanted to scale back the state and restore constitutional principles.

In 1980, just like Trump did in 2016, Reagan ran against the Republican Establishment and a Democratic Party lurching leftward, including a strong primary challenge from US Senator Ted “Chappaquiddick” Kennedy.  Reagan’s conservatism bothered GOP liberals so much, that one House Rep (the Jeff Flake of his time) John Anderson launched a third-party bid, which only helped Reagan. Reagan’s incredible victory took down the abysmal incumbent Carter, a rudderless administration defined by hand-outs, oil embargoes, Iranian hostages, and a country at home struggling through stagflation. Carter became President only because he ran as a relatively unknown centrist.

Today, President Trump’s victorious election win and first year remind us how outsiders can get in to make American great again. Candidates who listen to the working classes and middle-income voters on their most pressing concerns will win every time. Republicans forgot this lesson for thirty years, focusing more on raising big money and making nice with the press

The once-disdained free market reforms implemented by Reagan lead the country through a massive economic contraction. Similar reforms are helping buoyed American workers today. Reagan’s version of tax cuts generated five years of unprecedented economic prosperity.

Despite an assassination attempt early in his presidency, Reagan survived, and his standing thrived before the American people. His robust optimism brought a country on the brink of second-tier solace to first-tier resurgence. Like Trump, Reagan loved this country, and did everything to protect it. He projected strength within the first 100 days of his first term. The Ayatollahs released the American embassy hostages within weeks of his election win. As President, he called the recalcitrant air traffic controllers’ bluff, as they had reneged on their promise not to go on strike. Reagan firmly ordered the federal employees: “Get back to work in 48 hours, or you will be summarily terminated.” Unlike his predecessor, the former B-Movie actor was not playing around. Decisive leadership with clear, convincing rhetoric defined Reagan’s Presidency.

And he was not afraid to call evil to its face. How desperately we need leaders to define and defend moral absolutes in a morally relative world. The Soviet Union was no wayward global competitor, but “The Evil Empire.” Jailed dissidents in Russia celebrated this moral turn in the Cold War. Reagan’s international victory, to supervise and behold the dissolution of the Soviet Union, was Reagan’s single most important win, a product of his communication process and grounded visionary hopes. As early as 1968, he had declared “I want the Berlin Wall to come down.” Academics, intellectuals, and media pundits had all resigned themselves to the lasting influence of Soviet Communism.

Reagan knew better. He knew that the Soviet Union needed to liberalize their economy to survive, but Reagan played for keeps, demanding an end to that sordid regime, including the removal of the hated Berlin Wall. To this day, my most memorable moment happened when I was 8 years old, and  I watched the Berlin Wall come down, with jubilant Germans climbing, dancing, and ultimately cutting down that wretched, artificial divide. Reagan’s principled perseverance was inimitable yet worthy of imitation, and for that we should be forever grateful.

Why We Should Think Twice About Reagan

The biggest problem isn’t entirely Reagan per se, but rather how stagnant Reagan-mania has made conservatives. Remembering his accomplishments cannot replace fighting for future conservative victories. During Election 2012, Republican Presidential contenders resorted to praising Reagan and dropping anecdotes about when they shook his hand or talked to him. Obama was a weakened incumbent, but Reaganite nostalgia did not promote a robust, victorious conservatism.

I wouldn’t go so far as columnist Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post (“Tear Down This Icon”), but Republicans need to stick to current solutions for today’s issues. On other matters, Reagan supported an assault weapons ban. He strong-armed fiscal hawks early in his administration to vote for more debt-ceiling increases with promises to cut the spending. The spending cuts didn’t happen, the necessary entitlement reforms were abandoned, and our government needs to take national debt seriously. I could spend the next three paragraphs raging about the infamous Simpson-Mazzolli amnesty. I would say that immigration reform failed because there was no wall or funded enforcement. Learn from Reagan’s mistake, President Trump and Republican Congress!

In short, indeed we should celebrate Reagan for his stellar accomplishments, from election victories to policy wins, but we can’t bask in the triumphs of yesterday to win against the imposing evils of today. Sadly, that defines the objectives of too many political operatives today.

Wyoming Republican Party Celebrates Tax Reform, Election 2018 Chances

I've just returned from the Republican National Committee's winter meeting in Washington, DC.  Here are some highlights of the terrific gathering:  

National Committeeman Richard George of Powell and National Committeewoman Marti Halverson of Etna and I were treated to a luncheon featuring Vice President Pence.  The Vice President delivered an exciting and passionate speech, providing a long list of accomplishments by this administration in its first year.  He reminded us to pray for our divided country.

We were fortunate to attend a dinner at the Trump Internation Hotel near the White House. President Trump delivered a very candid and heartfelt talk to the crowd of 300 plus. The President then entertained a time of Q&A. It was a grand evening with so many commenting on how natural and comfortable President Donald J. Trump appeared during his address.

Other highlights during the packed 3 days were RNC fundraising training, chairman reports from every state and some of territories, and subcommittee meetings where rules and resolutions were debated and passed. We learned the Western region is growing more red - and I reminded everyone that Wyoming leads the way in solid support for our President and our conservative agenda. Washington State appears to be the biggest surprise and hope with the largest gains in Republican elected officials

This past year marks some exciting milestones - all with due cause for celebration:
>> 2.4 million jobs added to the US economy
>> A tax cut bill we haven’t seen the likes of in a generation
>> 22 regulations eliminated for every new one written
>> Military spending prioritized for the first time in 10 years
>> ObamaCare mandate eliminated!
>> RNC raised $134 million, most ever in an off-election year, and has no debt
>> DNC is $5 million in debt and only has $400,00 cash on hand

That is a fine list to celebrate, but history gives us a grim reminder: The off-cycle elections after a Republican President is elected is typically a swing to the opposition party. Even though the RNC is in the best position it can be going in to these mid-term elections, NO ONE is taking anything for granted. Wyoming is no exception. We understand that democrats nationally and in our state have awakened. They are angry and motivated to win.

We must by determined to not only hold our ground in Wyoming, but avoid complacency and fiercely take on each race in earnest. This will require action from every Republican in this great state. The WYGOP needs to hear from you. We need financial resources and volunteers. We need your help in getting out the vote. There are numerous excellent tools at our disposal and we need help from fellow Republicans to implement them to victory.
