The Shot (Not a Mere Shout) Heard Round the World

And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;

We set to-day a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

 

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare

On July 4, 1837, American Transcendentalist poet Ralph Waldo Emerson composed the Concord Hymn to commemorate the 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battle of the American Revolution.

While all of us can connect to this moment because it gave birth to our new nation, Emerson had family and personal ties, as well. His grandfather, William Emerson, was the minister of the Concord church, and he was an eyewitness. Emerson's home, the Old Manse, overlooked the battlefield and the Concord River.

It’s a moving poem, whose devices and images should inspire us to this day to revere our country and recognize the immense sacrifice of farmers, blacksmiths, and humble colonial men who stood up to tyranny, asserted their rights as Englishmen, and forced a new country in the end.

In true Transcendental form, Emerson transforms the first bullet fired in the battle of Lexington and Concord into an eternal harbinger. Emerson invokes the Spirit of America, the American citizen, and the restless rustics who defeated the British Empire and beat out a path of freedom for the future. The legacy of individual liberty under the rule of law, which the British Empire neglected and then violated, animated our forefathers to demand redress for grievances from the Mother Country. When she refused, the colonists fought for their freedom and for a new country.

The first symbol of the hymn centers on the "flag to April's breeze unfurled." Our American banner of rebellion and revelation serves today as the signal to the world that the order of tyranny gave way to liberty. The "embattled farmers" were not sowing seed, but shedding blood, with their first shot "heard round the world."

And it was a shot. Not a mere shout.

The mythic history of the Americas starts with the Columbian proposition that the world is round, and now, "round the world," the New World fires away at the Old World. Another symbol connects tradition to truth, a timely action to a timeless legacy; the bridge that the Concord farmers crossed bore witness to their refusal to let the natural order of power and hierarchy diminish their righteous call for liberty.

The bridge "arched the flood." The arch represents the technological advances of centuries past, the wisdom of ancient men, which bolsters man's desire to be free from the forces of fallen nature. "Flood" suggests the great flood in Noah's day. Which wiped away the sons of God who slept with the women of this earth. The mighty progeny who menaced the earth so displeased God that He reached out to the last man, one who found grace in his sight. God bore him and his family above the floods. The waters washed away the wickedness of an old, corrupt order for renewal, much like the Americans did with the British Empire.

From the all-noticed "shot" that awoke the world to a new order, in which imperial giants fall before free men, the second stanza identifies "The foe long since in silence slept." Emerson defines the Enemy in vague terms, denouncing every subduing power seeking to subvert the proper substance of man: his free spirit.

Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;

Despite dispirited early days of the America Revolution, colonial forces rebuffed the Empire's attempt to empty the American colonists of their rights. "The conqueror silent sleeps", no longer having to guard their hard-fought freedom. Instead, the poet longs for a harder ground for the memory of what they did.

And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.


Not the Spirit of Liberty, but the force of time has ravaged the same "arched" bridge. The means of victory have disappeared, so the poet sings of the farmers who fired back so no one forgets. "The dark stream" can remind us of the inevitable oblivion of man's memory. Yet the next generation can prevent this loss and withstand the force of Time, just as the American colonists resisted tyranny.


Time wears, Nature works, but we can withstand both to remember those Farmers and their heritage which made our country.

The green banks and soft streams are novel, yet constant, eternal and enduring. Emerson wants us to treat our history of Independence with the same reverence.

Not a flag, not a bridge, but a stone of remembrance will stand in place to stop the eroding forces, similar to the Twelve Tribes of Israel, which established twelve such markers to remind the Israelites that their forefathers left Egypt to enter the Promised Land. No bridges were needed then, and for the writer of the Concord Hymn, instead of a bridge, a votive stone reminds the people what the Concord farmers did.

"Deed" and "Redeem" with cutting assonance, command our attention, and every historical marker seeks to do the same with every event.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.


The American Spirit inspired the farmers who fired "the shot heard round the world." They "dared to die" not just for themselves, but for their children. Let us commit to the same future.

On Independence Day, let us honor those farmers who withstood the British Empire, firing the shot that unleashed a new world. Following seven years of setbacks, near-misses, and finally consummate victories, the American colonists created the United States of America.

Though some suggest that America, the City on the Hill, has dimmed, they should remember that all it took to ignite the fight for liberty was "one shot heard round the world".

Let us leave the “Concord Hymn” with this parting thought.

It was a Shot, not a Shout, that the world heard. Shouts are easy to drown out—consider the October Revolution, the Nuremberg Laws, and Tiananmen Square. A bullet cannot be so easily ignored, but rather can overthrow the despot and the enemy.

It was a Shot, not a Shrug. The farmers risked their lives when their rights were at stake. They didn’t complain then retreat to their little farms.

It was a Shot, not a Shower. The fight for freedom is not easy, and the fundamental right to keep and bear arms ensured that the founders of the United States endured as a free country, not a vassal state of declining tyranny.

Iranian Freedom Fighters Need Guns – America Could Arm Them

 


If the last argument of kings is war, the best response from the citizenry is guns.

Machiavelli wrote that “The chief foundations of all states... are good laws and good arms.”

Those good arms must be in the hands of citizens, and the world is waking up to the need for guns for themselves to fight the tyrants who persecute them or seek their extermination. We Americans are not fools for holding onto our firearms. Corporate media stateside and around the world can laugh at us or condemn us for the high number of gun-related deaths, but when controlled for location (big Democrat-run cities v. Rest of America) and reasons (self-defense v. murder), the numbers even out, and America comes out better.

Americans are safer and freer than the rest of the world because of our guns.

In a previous article, I argued that Trump should pressure other countries to adopt their own version of our Second Amendment in their respective constitutions. If other countries want to make their countries great again, then good citizens need good arms to ensure the enforcement of good laws.

There’s no better example of this need than Iran. President Trump took out their nuclear capabilities last year. Israel and the United States have escalated the war to break the will of the Islamic militant government and finish them off.

The United States cannot finish the job alone. The Europeans are unsure about stepping in, and China has only pressured Iran to open up the Strait of Hormuz. One key demographic must intervene for freedom: the Iranian people themselves.

How do we assist the Iranians? The Ayatollahs and the Iranian national guard are committed to global jihad, even if it means mowing down their own people, and nearly 50,000 have been wiped out.

For ancient Persia to be free once again, the Iranians need guns. We can supply them, too.

There is precedent for this.

In 1944, American forces airlifted weapons into Poland to assist the resistance against the Nazis. We also supplied the French maquis resistance fighters.

Arming Iranian citizens will serve several purposes:

1.      Allow the citizens to rise up, which would force the unelected IRGC to focus on internal matters

2.      By overloading and reprioritizing their attention, the Ayatollahs and IRGC would have fewer resources to police or frustrate the Strait of Hormuz.

3.      This effort would save lives. The unelected IRGC will likely murder more of their own people. Arming those “defenseless citizens” would give the innocent a fighting chance to protect themselves.

4.      This maneuver would cost the United States far less in terms of blood and treasure. Dropping arms into key locations across the country will assist the Iranian resistance and flip the balance of power in the country.

 

Can we trust them to fight back? Would they raise their arms against the regime?

They have every right to!

Their faith declares that killing one’s Muslim brothers is strictly prohibited. Quran 4:93 says, "But whoever kills a believer intentionally—his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.”

Despite this severe admonishment by The Prophet, the corrupt leaders in Iran have slaughtered fellow Muslims with irreligious abandon.

Between the corrupt regime of Iran and its proxy militia, they have murdered hundreds of thousands more Muslims around the world since 1979. In fact, the unelected Iranian leaders are an “occupying government” that has slaughtered far more Muslims than their inflated claims against Israel and America suggest.

Furthermore, Iran’s leaders are stealing the people’s money to foment revolution in Sunni-dominated countries. These funded militant radicals in other countries (e.g., Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, etc.) murder other innocent Muslims on Iran’s behalf. When the present conflict started, Iranian terrorist dictators attacked fellow Muslim countries more than the United States!

Indeed, Iranian citizens will rise if they receive arms to protect themselves. Muslim countries targeted by Iran could follow suit, and help provide weapons to their fellow adherents.

Iran has a whole smuggling operation to get weapons into other nations for their overthrow. There is even new evidence that Iran has previously helped Shia Muslims in Pakistan.  It’s time to return the favor to destroy this megalomaniacal regime.

In the Wild West, Americans called the handgun “the great equalizer” for a good reason. In fact, they say that the handgun won the American West; it brought law and order.

America and the Arab alliance can take advantage of boots on the ground by arming Iranian citizens. Unlike the militants in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Gaza, the majority of the Iranians would be happy to overthrow their government.

As they continue begging America to continue its pressure until the government is overthrown, Trump has told them to wait. Receiving handguns would signal that they no longer have to hold on. Give them the means to fights, and you give them a chance at freedom and protecting themselves. On a related note, it is vital that the United States not allow Iran to continue to nationally televise their propaganda. US Military action must take block it or shut it down

Will there be objections to this proposal? Certainly, from the CIA and foreign policy brass still wasting space in Washington, DC. They are confirmed liberals who live and work in Northern Virginia. They watch MSNOW (formerly MSNBC) religiously, and they make large donations to the Democratic Party. Trump has hired better leaders this term, but those Deep State analysts embedded in the federal government are still causing trouble.

Let’s consider their possible excuses and refute them all.

CLAIM: Supplying guns to civilians will help topple the regime, but cause someone worse to take over the country.

FACT: Iran’s government is already a suicidal cult. They believe that global war will hasten Allah’s return, and dying in the name of Allah will assure their heavenly rewards. There’s no risk because only saner minds will take over.

CLAIM: You cannot air-drop firearms because they would hurt civilians on the ground.

FACT: Deliveries at night and in secure packaging would reduce serious harm. Private firms engage in similar delivery methods. The United States can follow their example. 150,000 to 100,000 units must be provided, which would arm a massive civilian army that can achieve a successful revolution for the people.

CLAIM: The Kurds stole the weapons that we had delivered to them for this effort. Iranian civilians might do the same.

FACT: The Iranian people will most likely use the guns to resolve the largest problem facing them: annihilation by their government. Let’s trust them to serve their best interests.

CLAIM: If the Kurds didn’t fight, the Iranians wouldn’t either.

FACT: Besides the Iranians, regional groups can lead a revolt, such as the Baloch, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, and many others. Providing the weapons will help them all.

President Trump has initiated a military action long needed, but too long delayed.

Trump should release firearms in strategic locations to Iranian rebel groups prepared to organize and fight. With this savvy military move, Trump can finish off the IRGC, establish peace, and assure his party’s re-election chances in November.

The Pathway Forward for Constitutional Carry

 


As of May 2026, twenty-nine states have enacted Constitutional Carry.

What about across the rest of the country? The movement has stalled, since red states with GOP trifectas have all gotten the job done. Constitutional Carry’s advance has paused since South Carolina finally approved the reform on March 7, 2024. Of course, we shouldn’t give a round of applause to the Palmetto State, since the long-lasting legacy of RINOs did everything they could to thwart meaningful, conservative turn rights reforms. But they did get the job done.

Nothing has budged since. Republicans are facing progressive backlash in other states, as expected since Trump got the top job a second time in 2024. Democrats are hard-pressed to stop this reform from advancing, and in the Rust Belt States, the last time they had Republican trifectas, the respective parties made some moves for gun rights liberation, but nothing along the lines of constitutional carry.

Where can gun rights activists expect the move for Second Amendment freedom?

I was really gunning for Virginia to join the Constitutional Carry club post 2025. That dream turned into a nightmare when Democrats not only swept all three statewide offices, but also expanded their legislative majority in the Virginia House of Delegates to near supermajority levels!

And now look what’s happening in Virginia: twenty-five gun control bills have blasted out of the legislature, including limits on the right to carry publicly, limitations on where one can carry, and even barring 18to 20 year-olds from carrying a firearm! The gun-rights movement was hoping that the Mother of Presidents would join the constitutional carry club. Sadly, that is not to be for the foreseeable future. Republicans must expose these draconian measures and scare gun owners and Second Amendment advocates to the polls.

North Carolina remains on the cusp of constitutional carry. The main obstacle is a matter of overriding the Governor’s veto. The Republican-dominated legislature passed SB 50, but Democratic Governor Stein vetoed the bill. He will pay lip service to public safety but refuses to enact the one key reform that will ensure it. Fortunately, the state senate overrode the veto.

Now the North Carolina House has to step up.

The Republicans in that chamber are just one vote shy of a three-fifths veto-proof majority. Of course, there are plenty of RINOs in the midst who are covertly hostile to gun freedom. At least thirteen of them bailed on the initial vote for the legislation last year. Election season is here, though, and those stay-aways have to step up and vote for the constitutional carry override if they want to get re-elected in 2026. Add to this dynamic the fact that some left-over former Democrat House Reps have ditched their crazy-woke party. GOP Leadership should reach out to them and offer them a legislative deal for their votes to get constitutional carry across the finish line. Second Amendment advocates, let’s cross our fingers for the Tar Heel State!

Does constitutional carry have a chance in any other legislative chamber this year?

The Pennsylvania state legislature passed the reform in 2022, but then Democratic Governor Tom Wolf vetoed it, and there weren’t enough votes for an override. Then came Election 2022, and Democrats took the House (by a slim margin) and the governor’s mansion, as well.

The state senate is still controlled by Republicans. As of May 6, 2026, the Pennsylvania State Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced its own version, even though the rest of the state went blue in 2022. Election 2026 is not looking much better for Republicans to gain a GOP trifecta for the next legislative session. They could win back the Pennsylvania House, but Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro maintains a strange popularity across the state, although GOP State Treasurer Stacy Garrity will give him a run for his money. She will campaign and win in 2030, and if Republican legislators are still in control, constitutional carry could come in 2031.

Wisconsin Republicans still control the state legislature, but Democratic Governor Tony Evers has resisted expansion of gun rights. HB 609 was introduced last year to enact constitutional carry, but it has gone nowhere since. Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany has a chance to become the next governor, since Evers declined to run again. If a wannabe Bernie Sanders candidate wins the Democratic nomination, Wisconsin may restore its GOP trifecta. Dairy State lawmakers must make constitutional carry a priority in 2027.

Will Michigan get back on track to restore and expand gun rights? Democrats control the Governor’s mansion in Lansing and the Michigan state senate. House Republicans have introduced their own constitutional carry bill, which could pass the lower chamber this year, preparing for a better environment after Election 2026.

Michigan may witness another 2010-style Tea Party wave, with Republicans washing back into power. The Democratic frontrunner for US Senate, former public health director Abdul El-Sayed, is a terrorist sympathizer. He is running against a state-wide tested and Trump-endorsed candidate, Mike Rogers, who nearly toppled Elissa Slotkin in 2024. He is the 2026 version of Pennsylvania’s Dave McCormick.

Republicans already face a favored field, since Democrats are split over the governor’s race. Democrat-turned-Independent and former Detroit mayor Mike Duggan was hurting the Democratic vote, but he ended up dropping out of the race. Still, Republican gubernatorial candidate John James is reaching out to him for support. He was pulling support from both parties, but his exit may help Republicans. The GOP took back the House of Representatives in 2024, and they are two seats shy of winning back the majority in the state senate.

With Rogers pulling off a US Senate win in the Wolverine State, he can pull up the rest of the Michigan GOP ticket for Election 2026. A GOP trifecta in Michigan must make it their priority to enact constitutional carry – then repeal the red flag laws and gun-free zones enacted under Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s (aka Gretch the Witch) Democrat trifecta!

What about Minnesota? Trump was within striking distance of winning the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes in 2016, then his numbers sagged in 2020, then perked up again in 2024 (but not as close as his first run). The Democratic brand is in trouble since Somali voter fraud has stirred up the state, but will it be enough?

Election 2026 can be the “Constitutional Carry” year if Republicans make their case. They need to drive home the dangers of a Democratic resurgence to power. Just look at Virginia and what Minnesota tried to do earlier this month! The Marxist Democratic Party wants to take the guns away, folks, and they are not shy about their intentions this time around.

So, what is the future for carrying constitutionally in the United States?

North Carolina is very close.

Michigan and Wisconsin could be joining the club, provided that Republican statewide candidates win big and bring up their state legislatures. Nevada is still dealing with large Democratic majorities in the legislature, and the Republican governor Joe Lombardo opposes constitutional carry. Minnesota remains a long shot. The rest are Democratic hellholes that have declared war on law-abiding gun owners.

Following the most ideal outcomes, three more states will join the Constitutional Carry club in the next year.

Florida Carry: DeSantis Still Failing on Full Constitutional Carry

Unlike Magadonians and their cult-like relationship with Trump, I am not afraid to criticize Governor Ron DeSantis when he misses the mark or has not fulfilled a promise.

Yes, DeSantis signed off on constitutional carry last year.



But it was not perfect. In Florida, it is still a crime to OPEN carry with a firearm, unless you are in the process of hunting or fishing. That is outrageous!

Furthermore, you have to be 21 years old to carry a firearm in Florida. Individuals reach majority at 18 years of age? Why the three-year delay?

That is also wrong! People can now purchase a firearm at 18 in Florida, but they carry without a permit. That conflict is ridiculous!

That is an undue burden which must be repealed, as well. Don't get me wrong: I am glad that CONCEALED constitutional carry is legal in Florida, but the work is not done.

What is the delay, Governor DeSantis? Why not allow residents to OPEN carry, too?

No more excuses! FULL CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY NOW! (And make Florida a Second Amendment Sanctuary nullifying all federal gun control laws, just like Montana!)

The face of gun control in Florida

Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo

is infringing on our Second Amendment rights.

Once again, Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo has made it crystal clear that only she gets to decide which civil rights are allowed in Florida, and the Second Amendment isn't one of them.

The Naples Republican is singlehandedly blocking legislation that would restore our right to Open Carry -- a key component of the right to keep and bear arms, which is codified in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution and Art.1 Sec. 8 of the Constitution of the State of Florida.

Open Carry refers to the act of carrying a firearm in plain sight. In Florida, you can only carry a loaded firearm openly while fishing, hunting or camping.

Passidomo claims she reached her nanny-like decision after talking to Florida sheriffs.

"The sheriffs who I deeply respect, who are in the business, who understand the issues, do not support open carry in the state of Florida, they support permitless carry," Passidomo said last year.

While Republicans enjoy supermajorities in both the House and Senate, Floridians have little protection from anti-gun leaders like Passidomo when they infringe upon our civil rights.

Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis promised he would sign a Constitutional Carry bill. Sadly, DeSantis broke his promise.

CS/HB 543, which the governor signed last year, allows only the unlicensed carry of concealed firearms. There was no provision for Open Carry. To be clear, this is not the same Constitutional Carry enjoyed in 26 other states.

We call on Gov. DeSantis to keep his word and demand that the legislature immediately send him an Open Carry bill.

We also call on Senate President Passidomo to better educate herself on the U.S. Constitution -- especially the Second Amendment. Perhaps she should talk to more Floridians, not just those with badges in their billfolds.

Our Second Amendment rights, which we've had since 1791, are not subject to the approval of local law enforcement. The Senate President should know that.

We do not intend to sit idly by while our members' rights are violated yet again.

Consider this our warning.

Election 2024: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for President


 

I understand that Donald Trump did some good stuff during his 4 years in office. Sure, we had a strong economy and we were energy independent. Yes, he appointed 3 new Supreme Court justices, And they repealed Roe v. Wade. But in the last two years he has denigrated the pro-life movement, and his Supreme Court justices have not been as conservatives as they should have been. Besides, there is more to conservatism than low taxes and cheap gas.

And you know what? There's a lot of stuff that he didn't complete, including the border wall, ending the birthright citizenship fraud, and cracking down on The Swamp. And there's some stuff that he started that was bad, like supporting the LGBT agenda, undermining Second Amendment protections, and increasing the national debt by $7.2 trillion.

Sure, he kept us out of more foreign wars, but he didn't get our troops out of Afghanistan. When crime was breaking out across the country, he posed for photos and tweeted "LAW AND ORDER!' Trump surrounded himself with sycophants who flattered him, then undermind him at every turn. He has still not learned the lesson that personnel is policy! He still calls RINO Lindsey Graham a friend.

We need a president who will make promises and keep them, and who is not afraid to take the lead and do what is right even when everybody else says that it's wrong. We need a president who is not afraid to use executive power and accomplish good ends. We need a president who has a record of success not just for himself, but for helping other Republicans and other good people getting elected. We need a president who has a broad vision not just to make America great again for four years, but who will restore America's greatness and attachment to our foundational beliefs and fundamental principles for years to come.

And above all we need somebody who has stood up completely to the health care-police state that was imposed upon us because of COVID-19.

And that is why I support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for President!

Bernalillo County Sheriff Allen: Defy Governor Grisham Immediately!


Dear Sheriff Allen:

My name is Arthur Schaper, and I am a resident of the state of California. My communication with your office may seem strange, but I think my comments are essential.
The country is well-aware of New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham's outrageous, unconstitutional order regarding concealed-carry and open-carry permits and self-defense actions in your county:
I should not be the first to tell you this, but she clearly does not have this authority. 
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution could not be clearer:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
This amendment applies to all governments throughout the United States because of the Fourteenth Amendment:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
I understand that you have made a preliminary statement in response to this unconstitutional order:
I urge you to make a clearer statement that your office will by no means recognize, comply, or enforce Gov. Lujan-Grisham's order.
This is an unconscionable power-grab with fraught implications for all American citizens. I urge you to show the state of New Mexico—and the countryyour leadership on this issue and openly defy the governor, reminding her that she is a steward of the people, not their sovereign.

Florida Carry Calls out Gov. DeSantis on Gun Rights

WOW!

If Gov. DeSantis does not make serious moves on Second Amendment rights, he has no business running for President OR Vice-President in two years.

Florida used to be known as the "Gunshine State" for being one of the few "shall issue" CCW jurisdictions in the United States. Today, Florida lags way behind nearly every other state in the Deep South (except for Louisiana, but they have a Democratic governor).

After the Parkland shooting in 2018, Republicans in Talahassee pushed for more gun control, limiting purchases of fire arms and enacting outrageous, unconstitutional red flag laws. Then as now, the Florida State government was a GOP trifecta.

Thankfully, Gov. DeSantis has been far more conservative and far more effective on a whole host of issues. During the last legislative session, he announced in press conferences and during constituent visits that he was all in favor of constitutional carry. Sadly, the state legislature stalled every bill and made excuses.

Activists even took over the offices for a number of legislators, and yet they could not move the legislation forward. One state rep in leadership acknowledged that many of the legislators wanted constitutional carry, but the timing was not "right" because the House Speaker and Senate President would not move forward on the bill. What a bunch of lame excuses!

In their latest press release, Florida Carry called out Gov. DeSantis for not allowing firearms at a public event where he was expected to speak. Wow! This does not look good ...

DeSantis creates illegal gun-free zone during Alachua fundraiser

Legally armed Floridians had their Second Amendment rights trampled Thursday evening during a fundraising dinner in Alachua County where Gov. Ron DeSantis was the keynote speaker.
 
As a result, scores of Florida Concealed Weapon and Firearm License holders were illegally disarmed, and not a single public official will own the decision.  
 
As we first revealed in a story published Tuesday, donors attending Thursday night’s “Ronald Reagan Black Tie and Blue Jeans BBQ” were warned in an email that legally carried firearms would not be allowed.
 
The $60-per-plate fundraiser was organized by the Alachua County Republican Executive Committee and held in the Legacy Park Multipurpose Center – a public building owned by the city of Alachua, which is taxpayer funded and supported.
 
Before they were allowed inside, private security officers with metal detectors searched every single attendee.
 
Alachua Police confirmed that firearms were prohibited inside the public-owned building. One APD officer said the barbecue was a “private event.”
 
Whose call?
 
According to Ann Stone, treasurer of the Alachua County Republican Executive Committee, she and other organizers were told by DeSantis’ reelection campaign and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that the governor would not appear if firearms were allowed inside the building.
 
Stone said the no-guns rule was verbal and not included in any written document. In Florida, written documents can be retrieved through a Public Records Request. Regardless, we sent a Public Records Request to FDLE seeking copies of the rules they use when DeSantis appears at a public event.
 
If FDLE issued the no-guns directive, they would be regulating firearms, which violates Florida’s powerful preemption statute. The 35-year-old law allows only the state legislature to regulate guns and has severe penalties for any public official who violates the statute, including a $5,000 fine and removal from office. As of Thursday evening, FDLE has acknowledged it received the records request, but has not yet produced a response.
 
Lindsay Curnutte, DeSantis’ political communications director, would not say who issued the no-gun rule – the DeSantis campaign or FDLE.
 
“We do not disclose matters of the Governor's security, and we refer you to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement,” Curnutte said in an email.
 
FDLE spokeswoman Dana Kelly did not return calls seeking comment for this story.
 
Deeds not words
 
DeSantis’ gun-free zone was not well received by the state’s gun-rights community.
 
“Clearly, Gov. DeSantis knows how to get action on his priorities, and while he has talked the talk for some time on issues such as constitutional carry, open carry and the right to keep and bear arms, his actions have spoken louder than his words – there have been no actions,” said Sean Caranna, founder and executive director of Florida Carry, Inc. “Today, the DeSantis campaign has decided that our society is safer when fewer people have guns. This is not the Second Amendment values held by Floridians. We urge Gov. DeSantis to return to his Second Amendment roots.”

Governor DeSantis needs to get back to business and support the Second Amendment in full. If cannot get constitutional carry passed in 2023, then he will have to explain to Republican voters on a national level while Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and others were able to get this incredible conservative reform done, but DeSantis could not.
