The Shot (Not a Mere Shout) Heard Round the World

"Concord Hymn" by Ralph Waldo Emerson

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set to-day a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

On July 4, 1837, American Transcendentalist poet Ralph Waldo Emerson composed the Concord Hymn to commemorate the 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battle of the American Revolution.

While all of us can connect to this moment because it gave birth to our new nation, Emerson had family and personal ties, as well. His grandfather, William Emerson, was the minister of the Concord church, and he was an eyewitness. Emerson's home, the Old Manse, overlooked the battlefield and the Concord River.

It’s a moving poem, whose devices and images should inspire us to this day to revere our country and recognize the immense sacrifice of farmers, blacksmiths, and humble colonial men who stood up to tyranny, asserted their rights as Englishmen, and forced a new country in the end.

In true Transcendental form, Emerson transforms the first bullet fired in the battle of Lexington and Concord into an eternal harbinger. Emerson invokes the Spirit of America, the American citizen, and the restless rustics who defeated the British Empire and beat out a path of freedom for the future. The legacy of individual liberty under the rule of law, which the British Empire neglected and then violated, animated our forefathers to demand redress for grievances from the Mother Country. When she refused, the colonists fought for their freedom and for a new country.

The first symbol of the hymn centers on the "flag to April's breeze unfurled." Our American banner of rebellion and revelation serves today as the signal to the world that the order of tyranny gave way to liberty. The "embattled farmers" were not sowing seed, but shedding blood, with their first shot "heard round the world."

And it was a shot. Not a mere shout.

The mythic history of the Americas starts with the Columbian proposition that the world is round, and now, "round the world," the New World fires away at the Old World. Another symbol connects tradition to truth, a timely action to a timeless legacy; the bridge that the Concord farmers crossed bore witness to their refusal to let the natural order of power and hierarchy diminish their righteous call for liberty.

The bridge "arched the flood." The arch represents the technological advances of centuries past, the wisdom of ancient men, which bolsters man's desire to be free from the forces of fallen nature. "Flood" suggests the great flood in Noah's day. Which wiped away the sons of God who slept with the women of this earth. The mighty progeny who menaced the earth so displeased God that He reached out to the last man, one who found grace in his sight. God bore him and his family above the floods. The waters washed away the wickedness of an old, corrupt order for renewal, much like the Americans did with the British Empire.

From the all-noticed "shot" that awoke the world to a new order, in which imperial giants fall before free men, the second stanza identifies "The foe long since in silence slept." Emerson defines the Enemy in vague terms, denouncing every subduing power seeking to subvert the proper substance of man: his free spirit.

Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;

Despite dispirited early days of the America Revolution, colonial forces rebuffed the Empire's attempt to empty the American colonists of their rights. "The conqueror silent sleeps", no longer having to guard their hard-fought freedom. Instead, the poet longs for a harder ground for the memory of what they did.

And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

Not the Spirit of Liberty, but the force of time has ravaged the same "arched" bridge. The means of victory have disappeared, so the poet sings of the farmers who fired back so no one forgets. "The dark stream" can remind us of the inevitable oblivion of man's memory. Yet the next generation can prevent this loss and withstand the force of Time, just as the American colonists resisted tyranny.

Time wears, Nature works, but we can withstand both to remember those Farmers and their heritage which made our country.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set to-day a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

The green banks and soft streams are novel, yet constant, eternal and enduring. Emerson wants us to treat our history of Independence with the same reverence.

Not a flag, not a bridge, but a stone of remembrance will stand in place to stop the eroding forces, similar to the Twelve Tribes of Israel, which established twelve such markers to remind the Israelites that their forefathers left Egypt to enter the Promised Land. No bridges were needed then, and for the writer of the Concord Hymn, instead of a bridge, a votive stone reminds the people what the Concord farmers did.

"Deed" and "Redeem" with cutting assonance, command our attention, and every historical marker seeks to do the same with every event.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

The American Spirit inspired the farmers who fired "the shot heard round the world." They "dared to die" not just for themselves, but for their children. Let us commit to the same future.

On Independence Day, let us honor those farmers who withstood the British Empire, firing the shot that unleashed a new world. Following seven years of setbacks, near-misses, and finally consummate victories, the American colonists created the United States of America.

Though some suggest that America, the City on the Hill, has dimmed, they should remember that all it took to ignite the fight for liberty was "one shot heard round the world".

Let us leave the “Concord Hymn” with this parting thought.

It was a Shot, not a Shout, that the world heard. Shouts are easy to drown out—consider the October Revolution, the Nuremberg Laws, and Tiananmen Square. A bullet cannot be so easily ignored, but rather can overthrow the despot and the enemy.

It was a Shot, not a Shrug. The farmers risked their lives when their rights were at stake. They didn’t complain then retreat to their little farms.

It was a Shot, not a Shower. The fight for freedom is not easy, and the fundamental right to keep and bear arms ensured that the founders of the United States endured as a free country, not a vassal state of declining tyranny.

Iranian Freedom Fighters Need Guns – America Could Arm Them

If the last argument of kings is war, the best response from the citizenry is guns.

Machiavelli wrote that “The chief foundations of all states... are good laws and good arms.”

Those good arms must be in the hands of citizens, and the world is waking up to the need for guns for themselves to fight the tyrants who persecute them or seek their extermination. We Americans are not fools for holding onto our firearms. Corporate media stateside and around the world can laugh at us or condemn us for the high number of gun-related deaths, but when controlled for location (big Democrat-run cities v. Rest of America) and reasons (self-defense v. murder), the numbers even out, and America comes out better.

Americans are safer and freer than the rest of the world because of our guns.

In a previous article, I argued that Trump should pressure other countries to adopt their own version of our Second Amendment in their respective constitutions. If other countries want to make their countries great again, then good citizens need good arms to ensure the enforcement of good laws.

There’s no better example of this need than Iran. President Trump took out their nuclear capabilities last year. Israel and the United States have escalated the war to break the will of the Islamic militant government and finish them off.

The United States cannot finish the job alone. The Europeans are unsure about stepping in, and China has only pressured Iran to open up the Strait of Hormuz. One key demographic must intervene for freedom: the Iranian people themselves.

How do we assist the Iranians? The Ayatollahs and the Iranian national guard are committed to global jihad, even if it means mowing down their own people, and nearly 50,000 have been wiped out.

For ancient Persia to be free once again, the Iranians need guns. We can supply them, too.

There is precedent for this.

In 1944, American forces airlifted weapons into Poland to assist the resistance against the Nazis. We also supplied the French maquis resistance fighters.

Arming Iranian citizens will serve several purposes:

1.      Allow the citizens to rise up, which would force the unelected IRGC to focus on internal matters

2.      By overloading and reprioritizing their attention, the Ayatollahs and IRGC would have fewer resources to police or frustrate the Strait of Hormuz.

3.      This effort would save lives. The unelected IRGC will likely murder more of their own people. Arming those “defenseless citizens” would give the innocent a fighting chance to protect themselves.

4.      This maneuver would cost the United States far less in terms of blood and treasure. Dropping arms into key locations across the country will assist the Iranian resistance and flip the balance of power in the country.

Can we trust them to fight back? Would they raise their arms against the regime?

They have every right to!

Their faith declares that killing one’s Muslim brothers is strictly prohibited. Quran 4:93 says, "But whoever kills a believer intentionally—his recompense is Hell, wherein he will abide eternally, and Allah has become angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.”

Despite this severe admonishment by The Prophet, the corrupt leaders in Iran have slaughtered fellow Muslims with irreligious abandon.

Between the corrupt regime of Iran and its proxy militia, they have murdered hundreds of thousands more Muslims around the world since 1979. In fact, the unelected Iranian leaders are an “occupying government” that has slaughtered far more Muslims than their inflated claims against Israel and America suggest.

Furthermore, Iran’s leaders are stealing the people’s money to foment revolution in Sunni-dominated countries. These funded militant radicals in other countries (e.g., Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, etc.) murder other innocent Muslims on Iran’s behalf. When the present conflict started, Iranian terrorist dictators attacked fellow Muslim countries more than the United States!

Indeed, Iranian citizens will rise if they receive arms to protect themselves. Muslim countries targeted by Iran could follow suit, and help provide weapons to their fellow adherents.

Iran has a whole smuggling operation to get weapons into other nations for their overthrow. There is even new evidence that Iran has previously helped Shia Muslims in Pakistan.  It’s time to return the favor to destroy this megalomaniacal regime.

In the Wild West, Americans called the handgun “the great equalizer” for a good reason. In fact, they say that the handgun won the American West; it brought law and order.

America and the Arab alliance can take advantage of boots on the ground by arming Iranian citizens. Unlike the militants in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Gaza, the majority of the Iranians would be happy to overthrow their government.

As they continue begging America to continue its pressure until the government is overthrown, Trump has told them to wait. Receiving handguns would signal that they no longer have to hold on. Give them the means to fights, and you give them a chance at freedom and protecting themselves. On a related note, it is vital that the United States not allow Iran to continue to nationally televise their propaganda. US Military action must take block it or shut it down

Will there be objections to this proposal? Certainly, from the CIA and foreign policy brass still wasting space in Washington, DC. They are confirmed liberals who live and work in Northern Virginia. They watch MSNOW (formerly MSNBC) religiously, and they make large donations to the Democratic Party. Trump has hired better leaders this term, but those Deep State analysts embedded in the federal government are still causing trouble.

Let’s consider their possible excuses and refute them all.

CLAIM: Supplying guns to civilians will help topple the regime, but cause someone worse to take over the country.

FACT: Iran’s government is already a suicidal cult. They believe that global war will hasten Allah’s return, and dying in the name of Allah will assure their heavenly rewards. There’s no risk because only saner minds will take over.

CLAIM: You cannot air-drop firearms because they would hurt civilians on the ground.

FACT: Deliveries at night and in secure packaging would reduce serious harm. Private firms engage in similar delivery methods. The United States can follow their example. 150,000 to 100,000 units must be provided, which would arm a massive civilian army that can achieve a successful revolution for the people.

CLAIM: The Kurds stole the weapons that we had delivered to them for this effort. Iranian civilians might do the same.

FACT: The Iranian people will most likely use the guns to resolve the largest problem facing them: annihilation by their government. Let’s trust them to serve their best interests.

CLAIM: If the Kurds didn’t fight, the Iranians wouldn’t either.

FACT: Besides the Iranians, regional groups can lead a revolt, such as the Baloch, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, and many others. Providing the weapons will help them all.

President Trump has initiated a military action long needed, but too long delayed.

Trump should release firearms in strategic locations to Iranian rebel groups prepared to organize and fight. With this savvy military move, Trump can finish off the IRGC, establish peace, and assure his party’s re-election chances in November.

Florida Carry Calls out Gov. DeSantis on Gun Rights

WOW!

If Gov. DeSantis does not make serious moves on Second Amendment rights, he has no business running for President OR Vice-President in two years.

Florida used to be known as the "Gunshine State" for being one of the few "shall issue" CCW jurisdictions in the United States. Today, Florida lags way behind nearly every other state in the Deep South (except for Louisiana, but they have a Democratic governor).

After the Parkland shooting in 2018, Republicans in Talahassee pushed for more gun control, limiting purchases of fire arms and enacting outrageous, unconstitutional red flag laws. Then as now, the Florida State government was a GOP trifecta.

Thankfully, Gov. DeSantis has been far more conservative and far more effective on a whole host of issues. During the last legislative session, he announced in press conferences and during constituent visits that he was all in favor of constitutional carry. Sadly, the state legislature stalled every bill and made excuses.

Activists even took over the offices for a number of legislators, and yet they could not move the legislation forward. One state rep in leadership acknowledged that many of the legislators wanted constitutional carry, but the timing was not "right" because the House Speaker and Senate President would not move forward on the bill. What a bunch of lame excuses!

In their latest press release, Florida Carry called out Gov. DeSantis for not allowing firearms at a public event where he was expected to speak. Wow! This does not look good ...

DeSantis creates illegal gun-free zone during Alachua fundraiser
Today, the DeSantis campaign has decided that our society is safer when fewer people have guns,”
– Sean Caranna, founder and executive director of Florida Carry, Inc.

Legally armed Floridians had their Second Amendment rights trampled Thursday evening during a fundraising dinner in Alachua County where Gov. Ron DeSantis was the keynote speaker.

As a result, scores of Florida Concealed Weapon and Firearm License holders were illegally disarmed, and not a single public official will own the decision.

As we first revealed in a story published Tuesday, donors attending Thursday night’s “Ronald Reagan Black Tie and Blue Jeans BBQ” were warned in an email that legally carried firearms would not be allowed.

The $60-per-plate fundraiser was organized by the Alachua County Republican Executive Committee and held in the Legacy Park Multipurpose Center – a public building owned by the city of Alachua, which is taxpayer funded and supported.

Before they were allowed inside, private security officers with metal detectors searched every single attendee.

Alachua Police confirmed that firearms were prohibited inside the public-owned building. One APD officer said the barbecue was a “private event.”

Whose call?

According to Ann Stone, treasurer of the Alachua County Republican Executive Committee, she and other organizers were told by DeSantis’ reelection campaign and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that the governor would not appear if firearms were allowed inside the building.

Stone said the no-guns rule was verbal and not included in any written document. In Florida, written documents can be retrieved through a Public Records Request. Regardless, we sent a Public Records Request to FDLE seeking copies of the rules they use when DeSantis appears at a public event.

If FDLE issued the no-guns directive, they would be regulating firearms, which violates Florida’s powerful preemption statute. The 35-year-old law allows only the state legislature to regulate guns and has severe penalties for any public official who violates the statute, including a $5,000 fine and removal from office. As of Thursday evening, FDLE has acknowledged it received the records request, but has not yet produced a response.

Lindsay Curnutte, DeSantis’ political communications director, would not say who issued the no-gun rule – the DeSantis campaign or FDLE.

“We do not disclose matters of the Governor's security, and we refer you to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement,” Curnutte said in an email.

FDLE spokeswoman Dana Kelly did not return calls seeking comment for this story.

Deeds not words

DeSantis’ gun-free zone was not well received by the state’s gun-rights community.

“Clearly, Gov. DeSantis knows how to get action on his priorities, and while he has talked the talk for some time on issues such as constitutional carry, open carry and the right to keep and bear arms, his actions have spoken louder than his words – there have been no actions,” said Sean Caranna, founder and executive director of Florida Carry, Inc. “Today, the DeSantis campaign has decided that our society is safer when fewer people have guns. This is not the Second Amendment values held by Floridians. We urge Gov. DeSantis to return to his Second Amendment roots.”

Governor DeSantis needs to get back to business and support the Second Amendment in full. If cannot get constitutional carry passed in 2023, then he will have to explain to Republican voters on a national level while Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and others were able to get this incredible conservative reform done, but DeSantis could not.

C'mon, Gov. DeSantis! Make Florida "Gunshine" Again!

March for Our Rights to March for Our Lives

First and Second Amendments focus of March for Our Lives in Hermosa Beach (Easy Reader News)

Only two hundred gun-control activists protested in the South Bay two weeks ago? That’s a victory for the Second Amendment, since thousands in Los Angeles County purchased firearms during the George Floyd riots in May, 2020. There are thousands more lawfully arming themselves to thwart rising violent crime rates across the county, due to pro-criminal District Attorney George Gascon’s lax enforcement policies.

It is shameful how gun-control fanatics politicize tragedy to disarm law-abiding citizens. They ignore the true causes of mass shootings: the breakdown of the family, the lack of law and order in urban areas, the dismantling of mental health interventions, plus the increased reticence of local law enforcement agencies to subdue assailants.

All of the proposed gun control measures from our distanced political class—bans on ghost guns, red flag laws, extended waiting periods—would not have stopped the mass shootings in Parkland, Florida; Uvalde, Texas; Aurora, Colorado; or Newtown, Connecticut. US Senator Dianne Feinstein’s assault weapons ban did not stop mass casualties or mass shootings across the country, either.

For the record, California is NOT one of the safest states when it comes to mass shootings, as they occur on average once every 8 days. (Source: Public Policy Institute of California)

To end mass shootings, the federal government must repeal gun-free zone mandates. Furthermore, California should enhance Second Amendment rights by repealing onerous and useless gun-control measures while extending right-to-carry provisions in public and private locations. It's time to march for our rights if we want to march for our lives.
