Civic Engagement Taskforce: LA County Superior Court Nominees

Confronting and questioning the judicial nominees was the best part of the taskforce. For years, I have wanted to hear these judicial candidates justify their campaigns, actually explain to voters why we should give them the time of day, let alone allow them to serve six-year terms in the Superior Court.

Judges are important. They don't (or at least they are not supposed to) make laws, but the interpret and apply the law. They also supervise the court procedures for criminal and civil cases. They also mete out the sentences once defendants are found guilty.

In the 1970s and 1980s, many of the judges in Los Angeles County, the Bay Area, and even the California Supreme Court were content to flout the law and allow repeat offenders to be released on their own recognizance, without any regard for the safety, welfare, or well-being of the surrounding community. We have witnessed current liberal judges in the Bay Area let off offenders with very weak sentences, like the college student who raped an unconscious woman, who only got a month in jail!

That judge was recalled.

Another judge, this time in Orange County, was recalled in 2003 because he was caught with kiddie porn, and lots of lawyers lined up to take that creep's place. That guy did not have the common decency to resign from office. Then again, someone who wants to sexually abuse children has no decency to begin with -- and he was removed from the bench.

By and large, though, bad judges don't go away. They just get re-elected over and over, and nothing is done to get rid of them. Most of the voters don't know or don't even care, and they don't make any effort to find out.

This forum gave us all a great opportunity to find out about many of the judicial nominees.

None of them were incumbents, so that was an interesting start.

They all gave opening statements, stressing their prior legal experience as well as their commitment to equity, diversity, fairness, diversion, i.e. all the liberal buzzwords that most LA County voters want to hear.

             

            

           

           

           

            

 George Turner arrived late, so he did not provide an opening statement. He did make the case for his campaign (somewhat) in this video:       

                 

To repeat, many of them talked about diversity. They talked about a balanced approach to justice. It's understandable, because (no doubt) every individual on that dias was a registered Democrat. It's impossible to compete countywide as a Republican right now, although I think that RINO Steve Napolitano is still part of the GOP, and he received a number of endorsements from other liberal Republicans--as well as the Los Angeles Times! George Turner is his opponent, and the general public would get a broader glimpse into his--and everyone else's--judicial philosophy.

 Wokeness is not justice, and it's the last thing that our court system needs.

To their credit, the nominees talked about the needs of victims and the importance of providing order in the courtroom. Steve Mac was the most disciplined of the candidates, with Renee Rose a close second. The other candidates seemed too casual or too partisan for the job. More commentary to follow.

Two of them were late, which was a little disconcerting. Why bother showing up at all if you don't care to be on time? Of course, I have run across judges in other settings, like at the LA County Registrar-Recorder's office, who display another level of incompetence altogether. One lady was running for a seat on the Superior Court, and she was turning in her paperwork to file.

And she filled out the paperwork incorrectly. She readily admitted as much in front of everyone else at the Registrar-Recorder's office. What is this?!

But back to the Civic Engagement Forum of Judicial nomimees ...

One of the questions posed to the judicial nominees touched on the legal matter of Judgment non obstante veredicto.

That was my question, and I submitted it to the moderator because I wanted to tease out the nominees' general legal competence.

It was pretty disappointing!

            

The moderator struggled with the language of the question, which is understandable. But so did the nominees! They weren't sure of what the question was asking them!

When I shared that I was the one asking the questions, I confirmed that I was asking their views on when is it appropriate to set aside the verdict of a jury. 

And they got it wrong, for the most part.

Here's the legal definition, for anyone is still curious:

A judgment notwithstanding the verdict (JNOV) is a rare legal process that allows a trial judge to reverse a jury's verdict. The Latin phrase non obstante veredicto translates to "notwithstanding the verdict".

A judge may grant a JNOV if they believe the jury's verdict: Is not supported by the facts, Contradicts the law, and Should have resulted in a directed verdict

There was a general set of questions about judicial philosophy and temperament in the courtroom, as well as how they would rate their ability to withstand public pressure to make decisions:

This was another bewildering demonstration of incompetence.

Most of the nominees had no idea what a textualist or an originalist interpretation even was!

YIKES!

Here are the comments on whether endorsements mar their capacity to be impartial in the courtroom:

           

I give George Turner credit for recognizing that this question was a very good question. Indeed, I think many voters should be concerned that the vast majority of these judicial nominees are begging the leftist LA County Democratic Party to line up behind them and endorse them.

All the candidates justified receiving endorsements from political parties or other interest groups. They also swore--sure--that they would not allow those endorsements to sway their thinking or their rulings or their judicial philosophy in the courtroom.

I do not believe that for one second.

One of the best questions posed to the nominees was "Do All Lives Matter?"

This was a particularly striking question, since most of the judicial nominees were black liberals, and presumably lined up with the whole Black Lives Matter agenda, which does not care about black lives--or anyone's lives, for that matter.

How they responded was actually pretty reassuring.

Here are their responses:

            

George Turner was the only nominee who went out of his way to politicize the question, pointing out that it seems to conflict with the "Black Lives Matter" movement. That was a very disturbing answer, to say the least.

Judges must be impartial, and they should not allow the skin color of a defendant or a victim to come into play with how they rule on motions, cases, or sentencing. We don't need more racism in the courtroom. We don't need more wokeness and moral corruption in the courtroom!

Final Reflection

Because of the relatively intimate nature of the forum setting, the nominees seemed more than happy to speak freely on issues. They showed their true colors, their lack of understanding on certain issues, but also a ready commitment to get to work on Day One, relying on all their prior legal experience.

Whether they were public defenders or prosecutors or county counsel, they all demonstrated a considerable pedigree of experience. This forum afforded the general public an opportunity to question and hold judicial nominees accountable at least once in their political careers.

Civic Engagement Taskforce: Nancy Pearlman

Nancy Pearlman is an environmentalist and grassroots candidate running for the LA Community College District Board of  Trustees.

This is a pretty important position but like many of the county-wide offices, most people are not paying attention to it.

Jerry Brown served on this college board before ascending into statewide politics. A seat on a county college board can springboard a candidate into higher office.

Nancy Pearlman announced upfront that was she was a former member of the college board, and she was running again to get the board back on track. She also made it clear that she was not seeking higher office:

            

Her opponent is a well-financed, union-backed incumbent.

She was lively, wily, and spritely throughout the entire debate. She talked a great deal about her prior experience as an educator, as well. Somewhat like me, she had taught every level of education, from kindergarten to college, and she had the chops and experience to prove that she could serve on the community college governing board.

                 

 I must admit that most of her positions were very left-leaning. She wanted to make college free, including the textbooks. That kind of thinking is fundamentally flawed, since someone is going to have to pay for it (you and me, of course, the vast majority of whom are not attending community college to begin with).

I do agree with her stance on getting rid of all the administrative overhead. Too many white-collar administrators going to meetings are sucking up all the money from the students.

          

 I also liked that she wants to oppose enrollment quotas.

Unfortunately, she also gave the same left-wing pablum about the need for more women's empowerment, even though the majority (vast majority) of students attending community college and universities are women:

            

I liked her spirit, and I liked her dynamism. She is connected to the community college movement, and she wants it to prosper. Community colleges in general are good for students, especially because they can help you save money for long-term university enrollment.

She was too liberal for my taste, but at least she showed up and spoke up.

Civic Engagement Taskforce Forum: Melissa Toomim for Congress

Melissa Toomim

In California's newly designed 36th Congressional district, an independent journalist and researcher is taking on Lyin' Ted Lieu. Lieu has been an eyesore in the Westside for ten years now, and he is still holding on, pushing pro-terrorist propaganda while holding up costly progressive regulations and anti-constitutional edicts on the voters of the South Bay and Santa Monica.

I can't wait to get rid of that guy. 

Unfortunately, in the last election cycle a shameless grifter named Joe Collins ran for Congress, pushing out a qualified conservative candidate named Derrick Gates: a pastor who had been ministering to the poor and homeless throughout the country for years, then settled in spiritually troubled California to make the difference. Collins was running to make consultants rich. He didn't put out yard signs. He didn't debate with anyone. He was just grifting, then he moved to Texas to run for state rep, where he lost badly to a real Texas conservative. Good riddance to that guy.

And now we have Melissa Toomim!

She announced her bid for Congress fairly early, to her credit.

I first met her at a meeting of the South Bay Republican Woman Federated in Torrance, CA in September 2023. She was collecting signatures in early for her Congressional bid, so that she would qualify for the ballot.

I was glad to see her launching her campaign as soon as possible, since too many Republicans do not get started soon enough, and then they fail to get into the general election.

She had some novel ideas, as well, on rolling back the surveillance state and treating individuals who refuse vaccines as a protected class under the Civil Rights Act.

And she was the only Congressional candidate who had the courage to show up and debate for the 36th Congressional District seat.

She did a lot of research and investigative work in to terrorist groups, and she found out that the current Congressman Lyin' Ted was connected with these groups. Let's not forget that Lieu supported giving terrorist-sponsor Iran lots of money to appease them from building nuclear weapons (which has not worked).

To her credit, she helped Dr. Kenneth Wright when he was challenging Ted Lieu, in large part because no one else had the guts to step up and take on that corrupt progressive. Toomim made it clear to the audience that she is a team player, not seeking to be the center of attention but rather focused on doing what is best for everyone else.

Kenneth Wright left the GOP in 2020, and he did not advance to the general election that year. I mentioned the failed grifter Joe Collins earlier.

She also pointed out her interest in focusing on federal issues: stopping illegal immigration and international terrorism. She knows these threats, and she understands what it takes to stop them.

She also talked about economic issues:

            

It's time to cut the regulations, and it's time to restore a more welcoming atmosphere for the entertainment industry. I really liked that she talked about the attacks on freedom of speech as well as crime.

Here, she had the courage to talk about the gender attacks on boys and men, particularly in education settings. She has the novel knack to point out serious concerns in public policy, ones which too many people in government and think-tanks are content to ignore.

Good for her! Boys, men, and masculinity are under attack like never before, and she called that out!

She faced a distinct challenge when answering some of these questions, because of the subject matter does not necessarily fall under federal authority, like improving education, but she did her best.

Told Ya So! Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas Resigns

Breaking news!

I called it from sources well-connected with the inner workings of the Deep State of Sacramento.

Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, Assemblyman for the 54th District (Culver City, West Los Angeles) has resigned.

He will leave office December 31.

He cited health reasons in his press release:

LOS ANGELES (December 27, 2017) - While it has been a great honor to serve as a member of the California State Assembly for the past four years, I have decided to resign from my post effective December 31, 2017.

This is actually a pretty sudden decision. He won't even offer a week for the voters in his district to react to this decision. Matt Dababneh announced his resignation with more time to respond than one week.

Why is Sebastian Ridley-Thomas resigning now?

The reason for this difficult decision is that I am facing persistent health issues. On December 18th, I underwent surgery for the fifth time this year. Although I expect a full recovery, my physicians advise that I will need an extended period of time to recuperate.

Fifth surgery? For what?! This is the first time that I have heard about his persistent health issues. What's the matter with this guy? He's only 30 years old. 

Accordingly, I submitted my letter of resignation to Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon late yesterday. I did so with great reluctance, but even greater respect for the office, which involves constant travel, an unrelenting schedule and high stress. Unfortunately, at this point, I am no longer able to deliver the effort my constituents in the 54th District deserve.  Consequently, I am also terminating my reelection campaign.

Constant travel to where? Yes, there are the flights from the district to Sacramento, but other than that, where has he been going?

When I resume public life, I intend to remain active in civic affairs, where my passion lies. Following recuperation, I will return to the work of political empowerment, millennial civic engagement, and inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Oh brother. When does this insanity end?

I am grateful to have worked with some incredible colleagues -- men and women of strong conscience and determination to keep California moving forward. My hope is that, in this next chapter of public life, I can help ensure that African-Americans, millennials, and all Angelenos have a strong and vibrant voice in shaping the future of the Golden State.

Former Speaker of the State Assembly John Perez jumped into the race to replace Xavier Becerra as soon as he was appointed Attorney General of California. Then barely a week later, Perez would drop out of the race, citing health reasons.

Yeah, sure, whatever.

I suspect this is more of  #MeToo, which was about to spill out.

Democrats are losing members left and right over all sorts of problems. Will there be a chance for Republicans to capitalize on the Democrats' losses to win a few seats and stop the supermajority  again?

The alarm about Islam creeping into our communities has awakened concern from otherwise liberal residents in the area.

Letter to the Editor: Trump Supporter Explains Meaning of "Chicano"

This is what I remember about the word Chicano!! Times have changed and it probably means something different to others, but this is what it meant to me then and I learned quick to get away from it!!!

I grew up in the 60's 70's era and I'm telling you that either I was to be a Chicano or surfer, you had to choose. Chicano meant you were with the gang members. I got into it in the 6th grade, got out quick because it was boring and all they wanted to do was accuse people of "I heard you were talking about me" and want to beat someone up for it. I started hanging out with the "surfer" crowd. Started going to the beach and living, not hanging out with people who wanted to beat up other people for nothing!

I even knew of a few white guys who were "Chicano" back then! It meant gang members back in the day. But I don't remember the gang members back then waving a Mexican flag! It's taken on a whole new meaning, like brown Mexican power or something like that!!

Child Abuse: Culver City Child Brainwashed to Support Sanctuary City Status

It pains me to listen to young people spout left-wing talking points, especially on immigration.

Notice what this young boy stated in Cudahy CA:

Now, in the Culver City City Council meeting, a couple of rude little children approached the podium.

One of the young charges announced that he was born a Democrat. That's not saying much. Most children have a childish naivete about themselves. When children start learning how to count, and care for themselves, they grow up and out of "The Democracy."

Then there was this impertinent youth:

A 15-year old who claimed that Los Angeles County was taking care of the homeless already because Measure H passed.

Nope.

Just because the residents of Los Angeles County voted for a tax hike does not mean that the extra revenue (if any) will go to housing homeless. And why is LA County using any money toward helping illegal aliens?

This is lawlessness, this is immoral misappropriation of funds.

In a way, though, no one can blame these kids. They are taught to hate this country.

They are being taught to feel guilty about "white privilege", whatever that means.

This is wahy Los ANgles for Trump and We the People Rising are taking our message to every blue section of the county and confronting these unjust, unfounded ideas.

Including the false argument that sanctuary cities will make everyone safer.

They will not. Let's hope that the 12 year old in Cudahy and the 15 year old in Culver City will not have to learn this lesson the hard way.

Let's state this disturbing reality for all to understand:

Adults who teach their children these abuse, liberal talking points are engaging in a form of mental child abuse. They are teaching students to feel guilty about the state of affairs in a fallen world, and that they have to pay the price for these terrible failings. They are also lying to them about the corrupt nature of power, and that even the best of intentions end up causing more harm than good.

They are indoctrinating these children to accept lies and emotional talking points rather than fighting for what is right and true.

Culver City: Deep Into Sanctuary State Stupidity

Here are my clips of the inanity and stupidity which took over the Culver City City Council Meeting on March 27.

The group wants to bring in Muslims, yet at the same time they want to provide a safe space for LGBT people:

Has anyone in Culver City actually read the Koran? Are they aware of the hostile views held by this cult toward paraphiliacs? How about to Christians and Jews? What about to apostate Muslims or individuals who renounce Islam altogether?

Like the grand poobah of corruption in the state senate--Pro Tem Kevin de Leon--this man justified illegal aliens' use of false IDs and stolen Social Security Numbers "the only thing they did wrong was  too ..." steal someone's identity. This is total perversion. The lawlessness in this town is outrageous.

In this state, it has reached such a fevered height, that not breaking the law has become a form of deviance all its own.

Notice in the clip below that the pro-sanctuary city audience actually laughed when members of our time talked about the lives stolen from their families by illegal aliens:

Just to let everyone know, the city could not precisely define "sanctuary city."

If words lose their meaning, men and women lose their liberty!

Final Reflection:

This is the status-insanity of the sanctuary city Left.

They are like little children, spoiled rotten who have gotten everything they wanted from their wicked parents--and now they are going to military school.

General Donald Trump is laying the smack-down on these unruly children, taking away their toys and their virtue-signaling lawlessness. How many of these states really think that they are going to get away with this abject, demonic folly? Cities like Culver City must really think that they can withstand not only the loss of federal funding, but the clear breakdown in law and order certain to follow.

What a say day for California that cities, both rich and poor, really think that they can violate/ignore federal law with no thought for the consequences.

This is a shame. A real shame!

Culver City: Sanctuary Insanity

Culver City has become another satellite of Santa Monica.

Or San Francisco.

The city council and leaders are embracing more left-wing insanity, inviting illegal aliens to take up space and live in their city, which will not be clear or fair after five years of rampant illegal alien criminality.

"I am cool, because I am pro-sanctuary city (like everyone else
and I don't want anyone to think that I am a bigot)"

Will this woman and other residents of Culver City "like" the rising crime and declining quality of life that will hit their city following the massive illegal immigration that overtakes the city? Or do they really believe that illegals will come, since even law-abiding citizens can no longer afford a home in most California cities?

Perhaps because so many of the residents rely on illegal workers, or because so many of the people living in the city are so liberal and out of touch with the concerns and challenges of the real world, the city council in droves showed up and shined the light on their creepy, unkempt virtue signalling.

The truth is that the last thing that any municipality should do is go sanctuary city.

Communities like Rialto, National City, and now Pittsburg have rejected sanctuary city status.

One simple reason: they cannot afford the loss of federal funding, which US Attorney General has threatened against all jurisdictions refusing to cooperate with and assist federal officials.

Culver City does not seem to care, so far.

They are full in the tank for sanctuary cities, and for amnesty.

One of the residents who spoke witht he above reporter called opponents of illegal immigration "hateful".

Nonsense. Harim Uzziel punched right back and reminded her that we have every right to attend the meeting and protest this outrageous policy.

This woman claims to be a pastor, but much of what she said, and much of what she claimed aligned with Biblical teaching was all wrong, and completely heretical:

She's a member of the Presbyterian Church, so of course she abides by extreme regressive, fleshly worldviews.

This is just disgusting on every level. Such people have no business advertising themselves as pastors or spiritual leaders under a Christian banner.

There are walls for the New Jerusalem. There were walls around Jerusalem, including a secure gate, which would open and close at proper times.

All this nonsense about globalism compassion runs against some dark realities about this fallen world and human nature. The pastor also did not mention Jesus one time.

The only time his name came up--was out of the mouth of a Muslim heretic:

Tolerance: Culver City Tries to Silence People, Deny Seats, Attack First Amendment Rights

Only five days have passed, and already I am getting all kinds of questions about what happened at the Culver City Cty Council meeting.

Yes, these liberals are pretty unhinged. It was crystal clear that a bunch or progressive organizers had taken over the meeting to put undue pressure on an already weakened and immoral board. What is the matter with these people? Do they not understand that enacting any kind of sanctuary city policy would devastate the city?

Do they really want to turn into Huntington Park? That city was a wonderful place to live in, visit, and do business. Now it's turned into a third world ghetto, filled with crime and debris. Code enforcement refuses to do its job.

The cartels run that city now, and the city council does the bidding of well-connected yet corrupt private vendors.

But when We the People Rising and LA for Trump arrived, we got nothing but disrespect and discrimination.

First, a few of the members of the audience were telling me that I could not sit in the second row from the front. They even lied to me and claimed that we could not reserve seats for ourselves or others.

Some of the left-wing agitators tried to pressure and shame us because we stood for our First Amendments rights:

One lady helped me to park along the street, and she was the only respectful person in the audience. She and I did not share values or agree on the sanctuary city position of the city council, but we respected each other.

Isn't it amazing, though, how hyp,ocritical these left-wing activists turn out to be! They claim to welcome everyone except those with points of view which they oppose.

Why even have city council meetings if the elected officials and their constituents are so opposed to freedom of speech? Don't they have any self-respect or regard for the United States Constitution.

When I wanted to take photos of the sanctuary city signs from the audience, some of the members tried to block me:

What are they so ashamed of?

Oh, and before I forget, the mayor actually told members of the audience that they could not "boo" speakers after they finished.

Culver City Council Meeting: NO, I Wasn't Arrested--I was UNJUSTLY Detained

OK, people.

Listen up.

I was not arrested at the Culvery City City Council.

I was unjustly DETAINED!

Crazy, but true.

Culver City wants to discuss whether to ignore and dishonor ICE detainer requests.

But they had no problem detaining me for possessing a weapon which had discharged by accident.

The police officer pushed me out of the city council chambers--for no reason.

I repeatedly asked the police officer why.

He refused to answer the uestion.

The police officer lied when he claimed that possession of a taser is a crime.

Now, it's not.

Harim Uzziel carries a taser--he has to, since he has lived in rough neighborhoods in the past--and he has been attacked by lawless thugs in LA before:

I am happy to report that friends of mine who follow LA for Trump and We the People Rising were watching Harim's livestream--and they immediately complained to the Culver City Police Department.

What else should be done?

What is it coming to in these "sanctuary cities", when law-abiding citizens are treated like illegal aliens, and illegal aliens are entitled to the privileges of citizenship.

The city will not honor ICE detainers, but they have no problem detaining citizens who are exercising their First Amendment rights.

Why I Am a Republican and Trump Supporter

At the Culver City City Council, before I spoke out against their criminal proposal to become a sanctuary city, I spoke during general public comment.

I declared why I am a Republican--and why I am a Trump Supporter



Republicans spend too much time defending individual officials and past Presidents.

They do not spend enough time defending and expanding upon Republicans' history in fighting for the rights of all, and ending special privileges for others.

Republicans formed to end slavery and polygamy.

They fought for civil rights.

They found against communism.

They have continued to fight for individual liberty and constitutional rule.

Free markets, free enterprise, and free people, among other factors about the Republican Party.

I am also a vocal supporter or Donald Trump.

He has done more to advance Republican policies than previous Presidents. I am glad that he is our President.
