Sassy Massie Takes on MAGA Meltdown Mike Johnson

A lot of pundits and establishment (or American First-lite) talking heads are grousing and condemning fiscal hawks in the House of Representatives for not going along with Speaker Johnson's re-election bid for Speaker of the House.

I agree with them.

There is no way that the current conference is prepared to deliver on the promises that Trump outlined in his 2024 campaign.

It's bad enough that Trump has a mixed record from his first term. Will he double down on half measures, or will he get the job done?

At any rate, there are typical talking points abounding that the whole effort to prolong the Speakership battle is a waste of time, will embarrass the GOP conference, could lead to a more liberal Speaker, and could even delay President Trump's inauguration because if the House is not organized, they cannot tally the Electoral Votes to award President-elect Trump and VP-Elect Vance their offices.

I am skeptical of all this fearmongering, of course.

The Speakership race is essential for the true conservatives, America First in Word and Deed, to make their case and put their mark on the House.

Rep. Thomas Massie provided a sound set of arguments to push back on the MAGA-Establishment fearmongering and shame-blaming:

As I provide his above statement in full, I will add my commentary:

First, let me note that the “vote for Mike” camp is not trying to make the case that Mike Johnson is endowed with the qualities necessary to lead our conference. Even you have limited yourself here to procedural justifications for his speakership rather than telling us why he is a good or capable leader.

I appreciate this angle of the criticism. Johnson is kind of a MAGA-Yes Man when everyone sees him on social media. When it comes to actually governing, figuring out what can be done, making every effort to reconcile the different factions within the caucus, he doesn't even try.

Apparently, shortly after becoming Speaker, the intelligence apparatus confronted him about key issues, like extending the abusive surveillance state, ongoing funding for Ukraine, and maintaining the rest of the bureaucracy.

And he went along with it. Part of strong leadership is knowing how to push back on the lobbyists, the corporatists, and the bureaucrats who clamor for more funding ... or else! Most politicians just don't know how to say "No" once they have the power to say "Yes."

Johnson has shown himself not to be an effective leader, and Massie explains why.

Even if Mike’s entire goal is to do everything Trump wants without debate or question (which I would argue is not healthy for the institution of Congress), he’s not going to be good at it. He already demonstrated this month that he won’t tell the President what is achievable and what is not achievable in the House, and he lacks the situational awareness himself to know what can pass and what cannot.

Politics is the Art of the Possible, not just the probable or the desirable. Leadership means having to tell some of your most ardent supporters that "We just don't have the votes." At the same time, leadership finds a way to get the necessary votes for key goals. Sadly, Democrats have been much better power players when it comes to twisting arms to get their way. I have read stories about Nancy Pelosi aggressively confronting members of her caucus who were wavering on a vote, and confronting them in the bathroom!

Rahm Emmanuel harrassed one of the Democrats from New York in the Congressional shower over votes. While I don't want anyone's natural rights violated, political leadership needs to find means for strong leverage to get the entire caucus in line.

1. “What do we hope to gain?”

A competent Speaker who has the will and the ability to capitalize on this once-in-a-decade opportunity. Johnson is not up for this task. Also, we want a Speaker who inspires the public and who can make our case in the media, so we can keep the majority for the second half of Trump’s term. Johnson nearly led us to the minority in what was a banner year for Trump. He is certain to lose us the majority in 2026.

The Speaker of the House is the chief fundraiser and promoter for the caucus. He not only wants to ensure that the entire conference keeps their seats in the next cycle, but he must work to expand the conference. Massie is right on here: Johnson failed. Republicans lost seats in California and New York, although the GOP did an incredible job in Pennsylvania and Michigan. What happened to the fifty-state strategy?

Johnson has already flubbed on national television, too, such as when he talked about the need for 'immigration reform' on Laura Ingraham's show. That was a red flag remark right away, and Ingraham pounced on it, since that phrase conjures up past betrayals for amnesty.

Also, he has little experience as a floor leader. Aside from chairing one small committee, Johnson has not worked all the angles of the conference the way that a leader needs to work.

2. “No one can get more votes.”

It’s somewhat ridiculous to assert that Mike Johnson is the only member of Congress electable to Speaker. He was only electable the first time because he hadn’t held any type of leadership position, nor had he ever fought for anything, so no one disliked him and everyone was tired of voting. He won by being the least objectionable candidate, and he no longer possesses that title.

Great point! Former Congressman Matt Gaetz pointed out that deposed Speaker Kevin McCarthy was frequently whipping votes against replacement speaker candidates every time another name was brought forward as another consensus candidate. Then Congressman Mike Molinaro said "Well, since Emmer failed, who was next in line? Let's just advance him!" That was Mike Johnson, and Gaetz jumped on that proposal to help rush Johnson to a floor vote, by which time there was no chance for McCarthy to whip against Johnson.

That's how we got MAGA Meltdown Mike.

3. “Risk crippling Trump’s win.”

This is argument is a scare tactic, meant to stampede the masses, plain and simple. There is no legal or parliamentary argument for nullifying the national election if a speaker is not in place on January 6th.

I agree. This is an empty scare tactic. The GOP Conference elected McCarthy after about a week of balloting. They will get this done before January 20th, 2025. Just like McCarthy, Johnson has not been meeting with key leaders in the GOP Conference about their concerns. Victoria Spartz declared on national television that Johnson has not put forward any plan to move forward Trump's agenda, for example.

Will he keep any promises? He didn't keep the ones he had made when first elevated as Speaker of the House. Why should anyone trust him now?

4. “They are allies of the democrats”

Actually, it is Mike Johnson who routinely passes major legislation (Ukraine, Omnibus, FISA spying) with only a minority of Republicans, and relying on most Democrats. He also owes his current speakership to the Democrats. Here’s the roll call for the motion to table the motion to vacate last summer. Pelosi and Jeffries teamed up to save Johnson:

The Democrats are basically running the show, once again. Why? Because Republicans are divided between those who actually want to drain the swamp, cut the spending, and get the country's fiscal house in order, and those Congressmen who owe their elections to big business, big military, and big labor donors who want their handouts.

Of course, the problem goes deeper when one considers that too many voters are not making larger, louder demands on their representatives to stop the spending, to put the needs of Americans first, and to honor and fulfill their oath of office to the United States Constitution! If you don't like what you see in Congress, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself: "Am I contributing to this mess? Am I still voting for the same people who promise me one thing, then go to Congress and break their promises again and again, only then to come back during election season and scold me with 'If you don't vote for me, the other guy will win, and he will be worse!'?"

In closing, the emperor has no clothes and the entire conference knows it but few will say it. The general public knows it too. Please don’t shoot the messengers.

Final Thoughts

Thomas Sowell, and by extension Ben Shapiro, have talked about all the perverse incentive structures at work in Congress. In order to get elected, Congressmen need lots of money, lots of positive media support. Their commitment, their dependence on donor classes is so strong, that they cannot back away from sending more money to Ukraine, or they cannot say No to continuing the reckless which keeps the bloated bureaucracy affloat.

Also, many Congressmen are launching into social media profiles and joining the broad Con Inc. commentariat. They are not interested in governing, as much as they want to make videos, create podcasts, generate a lot of heat to themselves when they prepare for their next career outside of Congress.

Some institutional reforms are essential for Congress to become more responsive to the people, and more importantly to the United States Constitution. For now, the best mechanism possessed by individual members to keep the Speaker in line is to frustrate any member's ascent to the gavel at the beginning of the term. This step does not maintain the power in the hands of the membership, however, once he gets the gavel. The motion to vacate will get rid of one bad Speaker, but who will take his place? This question needs more thought, more consideration. Congressmen Massie and his other dissatisfied colleagues have supposedly discussed this matter. Supposedly.

We will see what they come up with come January 3rd, 2025.

Johnson known as a conservative constitutional scholar, who called for the arrest of Nancy Pelosi for destroying an official document.  Mike Johnson is a strong pro-life conservative and a strong pro-family conservative who has publicly opposed tyrannical “LGBTQIA+” activists. And because a strong suit of Mike Johnson is he's a leader for election integrity, and because he was a vocal opponent of the kangaroo-court “January 6th” committee and its sham “hearings,” we must lobby Johnson to release all on January 6, 2021 videotapes, commission a subcommittee investigation of election-fraud allegations nationwide, and investigate the due process rights being denied political prisoners in both Washington, DC and Minneapolis. We need aggressive, eye-opening investigations of the open border, the harm of Planned Parenthood abortionists and the “LGBTQIA+” agenda, the desperate need for medical freedom, and the absolute need to protect our God-given parental rights, religious rights, and small business rights. The Renewed Fight for Speaker: Essential, Not Incidental

October 2^nd, 2023 is a date that will live in infamy for politicians who embrace big-spending, do-nothing status quo quiescence. Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a Motion to Vacate the Speakership of the House, and the motion passed the next day. Prior motions to vacate had been filed, and even voted on, but never succeeded until this year. This turn of events is unprecedented, and I submit all for the better.

The Conservative Commentariat has not shared my enthusiasm for this necessary disruption to Congressional Business-As-Usual dithering, bickering, and excessive spending. The hyperventilation from political class Republicans, including strong conservatives not afraid to buck the Beltway Establishment, is really saddening. Their latest source of angst: the Speakership fight which has ground Congress to a halt.

From Ann Coulter to George Will, conservative commentators are convinced that the dragged-out fight over the next Speaker of the House distracts from bare minimum legislating, will drag down the Republican Party and doom the United States to a federal Democratic trifecta for the foreseeable future. I disagree. Even if this fight hurts the Republican Party, or Washington’s diminished sense of solemnity, it was a much-needed tonic disruption.

For the last thirty years, voters have been sending representatives to Washington DC to secure the border, end unnecessary wars, cease the excessive spending (which Congress last achieved on the eve of Clinton’s presidency, only through considerably pressure from a Republican Congress), and restore federalism.

Politicians have not been keeping these promises, especially the Republicans, who barely won a majority in 2022 in part because of ongoing distrust from the base. Republicans in previous terms did very little to stop progressive agendas or the deficit spending, aside from a handful of outspoken conservatives. Republican lawmakers need to show more fighting spirit, the same that DeSantis is campaigning on now. 2016.

When Republicans don’t do their job, how do we hold them accountable? Ditch them during a primary or oust them during the general election. But what about while they are in office? Yes, voters can make phone calls, emails, press conferences, letters to the editor, and other public displays of outrage. Citizens can put together PACs and start blasting their elected officials with commercials on the airwaves.

However, the best way to hold politicians accountable during a legislative session is to delay their power or remove them from power. Speaker Emeritus Kevin McCarthy did not have a smooth transition to the speakership in January, 2023. He hadn’t earned the gavel, having refused to meet with different caucuses within the conference, especially conservatives who wanted key guarantees. Ultimately, McCarthy appointed conservatives to the Rules Committee and offered coveted chairmanships to others. However, he failed to deliver on other promises like providing twelve appropriations bills, stopping the excessive spending, and pushing forward term limits.

In May, 2023, McCarthy all but caved on the debt-ceiling negotiations. He passed increased spending until January 2025 with majority Democratic support. Once against, just like during his tenure as Majority Leader, he let the Democrats run the chamber.  Worse yet, McCarthy dawdled until the end of September to get only three appropriations bills passed. When the fourth failed, McCarthy resorted to another spendthrift continuing resolution, with the help of Democrats.

 

McCarthy’s intransigence on following through on his promises, plus his ready acquiescence to majority Democratic support for key bills, proved to be the last straw for conservatives. Voters and pundits alike should remember that this has been business as usual for Republicans when they controlled the House in years past. Enough is enough! Republicans across the country supported Gaetz’ decision to vacate McCarthy.

But criticisms linger against the Vacate Eight, and they deserve consideration.

Some have charged that Gaetz filed this motion for the celebrity, the grift, and to settle a score. Whatever his reasons may be, the open reality that McCarthy didn’t keep his promises was reason good enough. In politics, motive matters less than the votes themselves. Most politicians do the right thing if it guarantees them re-election, and we want them to cast the right votes, even if for the wrong reasons.

A more substantive criticism implicates the Vacate Eight for not thinking through the larger process. “So, you remove McCarthy. What’s your gameplan going forward?” I explained to one critic that the rest of the conference needed the assurance (or the pressure) to make decisions against leadership. If McCarthy was forced out, the rest of the conference would have been free to (or have to) make decisions for a better speaker.

What if this process drags out even longer?

First of all, Americans should rejoice when Congress is unable to spend money they do not have, whether by squandering tax revenues or increasing the deficit spending.

Second, the Uniparty of “spend more, ask questions never” has been exposed. The Republican electorate sees the members of Congress who are determined to keep the Big Government largesse funneling to the several states, all while our national debt explodes, inflation ravages Americans’ buying power, and foreign countries ditch the US dollar as a reserve currency. All the lip service for controlled spending and balanced budgets amounts to nothing. Primary challenges can ensue in earnest, and perhaps Republicans as a national consensus can force out big spending RINOs on a larger level, and come 2024 get better House leadership, even if Republicans must suffer in the minority for a term.

Third, conservative activists and political wonks need to focus on the factors that create strong Republicans in Congress. Safe districts, sure, but how about representatives who rely on local support and funding for their campaigns? Candidates who have learned to harness media and social media activism to increase their profile while enhancing their grassroots strength do remarkably well in resisting the Swamp. These factors help explain why Congressmen Gaetz, Rosendale, Good, and others have stood strong against the House GOP Establishment.

Rep. Gaetz’ Motion to Vacate was a much-needed house-cleaning for Washington politics. We should relish this period of disruption for potential long-term improvements.

The Motion to Vacate: Vacation from Business as Usual

 

In January 2023, I watched with great joy as the House GOP conference withheld the Speakership from Kevin McCarthy. I never wanted him to be anywhere near leadership, and I wrote as much when the House GOP revolted against John Boehner eight years ago.

McCarthy did not earn the Speakership then, and he deserved to lose it now. McCarthy has a pretty diverse reputation, in California and throughout the country. A red wave turned into a red trickle in Election 2022, in part because Republicans did not put forward a real vision, and McCarthy killed conservative challengers in key districts, and strong conservative candidates basically got the boot during the general election.

What’s the point of raising big money, when you can’t make a big difference once elected? Money talks, but actions walk, and now more than ever this country needs action. McCarthy presided over a nine-seat majority after his election as Speaker. He should have known he was on thin ice from the word “Go.” He made promises, he agreed to a comprehensive rules package which made sure that he played by the rules as much as possible.

And yet, he still did not deliver on what was promised.

He promised to introduce a balanced budget amendment. He didn’t do it.

He promised to bring up term limits. He didn’t do it.

He was supposed to deliver twelve separate appropriations bills, and yet only four were brought to the floor, and with the impending budget deadline of September 30^th, 2023 looming. Business as Usual was booming back into play.

Thankfully, eight Republicans stood up and said “Enough is enough.”

Rep. Gaetz’ motion to vacate was not narcissism, suicide, nor chaos: it was following through on conditions unmet. Aren’t we all tired of bad politicians doing bad things and not being held accountable?! McCarthy didn’t play by the rules, nor play to win. It was time to take him off the field.

What astonishes me, though, in the whole Vacate Fight is the hand-writing from many conservative influencers across the country. They sound like battered women so used to failure from their leaders, convinced that “well, this time he won’t hurt me. He promised he would be different.” Have all the influencers, pundits, and commentators become so desperate, that they would tolerate yet another set of betrayals?

Ann Coulter claimed that the House GOP should focus on winning more seats, taking back the US Senate, and also winning the Presidency. She commented that voters don’t care about spending, and that the House GOP should focus on issues like immigration, keeping men out of women’s spaces, and protecting people’s appliances from broad government bans.

And all of the above issues she mentioned are important. Yes, they poll highly with voters. However, what’s the point of winning elections next year if the incumbents don’t do what they promise to this year?

And inflation is a serious issue, as well. All over social media, you have parents, consumers, and commentators showing, explaining, shouting how prices are doubling from six months ago to a year ago. The high price of fuel, housing, and other goods is beyond calculation.

We have inflation because of too much spending, and Republicans have complained about the spending for decades. Yet for decades, Republican candidates promised to “stop the spending.” And they simply haven’t. The Reagan Administration slowed the growth of government, but they did not reverse it. The Bush 43 administration bragged about reducing deficit spending (but there were still deficits!) The Trump Administration followed the two trillion dollar CARES Act with the massive Corrupt-ibus passed at the end of 2020, exacerbating the inflation that is eating away our savings.

Part of good leadership, good governance is taking care of real issues, even when they are not popular or polling well, and then letting voters enjoy the benefit of good decisions. Cutting spending, stopping the borrowing, ending the waste in Washington will cool off the inflation and stop the necessary rate hikes which have followed for the last six months.

Then there was Mike Levin and Sean Hannity, who were all cheer-leading for McCarthy from the get-go. Why? Because Trump did. But that’s not a good reason to support anyone for anything anymore. Leadership means getting the job done (too much of which Trump failed to do when in office.) And for too long, voters have had to stuff their rage and keep voting GOP because “the alternative will be worse.”

Well, this time that excuse didn’t protect McCarthy, nor did it protect the rest of the political class which had gotten favors from him or expected to cash in on more money into the swamp. Finally, there’s some accountability! You make a promise, you better keep it, or you will lose your job!

“But what’s the gameplan?”

With McCarthy out of the way, a better Speaker can emerge. Jim Jordan could be a compromise candidate, better than Scalise, who is too close to the McCarthy regime at this point. Many of the grassroots wanted Jim Jordan at the outset, but he refused (wisely, I might add, because the time was not right). Now, the big-spending moderates have no choice. They have to go along with a more fiscally prudent leader.

“Now we will lose seats in the House!”

I don’t believe it. Frankly, if Republicans continued with McCarty, and they continued the reckless spending without putting forward any of the promised amendments, bills, and reforms, Republicans would not have turned out. They didn’t get the GOP across the finish line in 2022, in part because Republicans delivered more money to Ukraine than relief to American citizens. What would make anyone believe that things would have been differently if … McCarthy and company continued with business as usual?

The general punditry class is all wrong on this one. The Motion to Vacate was a necessary course correction to stop Business as Usual in Washington DC.

Congressman Bob Good (R, VA-5) Update: Changing the Status-Quo in Washington

 

This week, the House of Representatives passed a motion that vacated the office of Speaker of the House and removed Kevin McCarthy from the position. I voted in favor of this motion, because former Speaker McCarthy failed to keep his promises to fight for the American people, failed to advance our conservative agenda, and failed to keep the commitments he made to become Speaker. [Bold type added] Former Speaker McCarthy did not use every tool at his disposal to fight against the radical Democrat agenda. He failed to keep his commitment to cut spending to pre-COVID levels. He made a deal with President Biden providing an unlimited increase to the debt limit, without significant spending reforms or reductions; and passed it with predominantly Democrat votes. He failed to keep his promise to bring our required 12 annual spending bills to the floor before the September 30 deadline. He blocked our Budget Committee from bringing our balanced budget to the House Floor for a vote. And, on September 30, he passed a temporary spending plan, or Continuing Resolution (CR), that maintains all of the Biden-Schumer-Pelosi policies that are destroying our country, and the spending levels that are bankrupting our children and grandchildren. This CR passed with Democrats voting 209-1 in the House and 51-0 in the Senate.  The country simply cannot afford the status quo. We need a Speaker who is a leader and a fighter, and who is determined to balance the budget, secure the border, and stop the radical Biden agenda. We need a Speaker who is willing to stand up to the Democrats and fight for the American people. Next week, House Republicans will come together to choose a new Speaker, and I urge my colleagues to back someone who will be a true champion for the American people.

Endorsements for CAGOP Convention 2022

Hey everyone!

Here are my endorsements for the California Republican Party slate at the 2022 CAGOP convention this year.

Governor:

		Anthony Trimino

Senator Dahle is as swampy as they get. He has blown off calls for change from the grassroots for years. Jenny Rae supports amnesty. Leo Zacky is a good guy, but he is pretty much a one-man show at this point. The other candidates are no-name or no traction. And then there's Major Williams, who is a bilking, grifting fraud who claimed that he was running for Governor during the 2021 Recall election, and then at the last minute, he did not file. What a joke!

Anthony Trimino is the only candidate I know who has been out and about getting votes, getting people's attention, and wanting to make any kind of difference. I am supporting Anthony Trimino. (And he was born in Torrance, my hometown. You can't beat that!)

Lieutenant Governor:

David Fennell

Angela Jacobs is the last minute establishment pick. I will always go against the consultant-class establishment. I am voting for David  Fennell for no other reason than that.

Secretary of State:

Rachel Hamm

Rachel Hamm has been seeking this seat for months, and she is not afraid to sound the alarm on the rampant voter fraud in the state of California. You know a candidate is good when even the hate-rag The Daily Beast has to defame her! Bernosky is the last-minute establishment pick with outstanding campaign fines. JW Paine is runnig to expose Bernosky. I respect that, but I am focused on general as well as the primary election. Vote for Rachel!

Attorney General:

Nathan Hochman

Eric Early is another swamp creature who was propped up by the LA County GOP RINOs in years past. He is a grifter's dream. I am going with Nathan Hochman. He has a long history of legal experience. But I will let Aaron Park fill in the rest of the blanks about RINO Eric:So let’s start off with the Moderate versus Conservative issue. Today, Eric Early is claiming to be the conservative in the AG Race. I remember not long ago when Early was the Center-Left GOP Candidate in 2018 for AG when Stephen Bailey got the nod out of the primary.

I supported Steve Bailey in 2018, and I wish him the best in his bid for state senate this year.

When I was working for Steve Frank in 2021, Eric Early refused to commit to Mr. Frank and join conservatives seeking a voice at the State Party. Given that the CRA has been shunned and attacked by the CRP, I would ask the CRA delegates to at least ask some tough questions of Mr. Early before they endorse him this weekend. The CRA needs to endorse people who will stand for them as much as they do for the candidates.

Eric Early is a RINO puppet for RINO-PLAC in Los Angeles County. I don't care how many times he has run against shiff-head Adam Schiff. He is Andy Gimmecandy's hatchet man, and we need as few of them as possible anywhere near positions of leadership and opportunity.

I have no illusions that Hochman is a solid Republican but not a textbook conservative. However, my experience with Mr. Early indicates that, in deed, he is not that Conservative either.

I want someone who will win and restore order to the state of California. Hochman's credentials are good enough that LA County Sheriff (DEMOCRAT!) Alex Villaneuva has endorsed him! That works for me, since I am now a big supporter of Alex Villanueva.

Then there is the $1.5 Million and counting that Hochman has. Early won’t have enough money to walk and chew gum simultaneously.

Controller:

Lanhee Chen

He's the only candidate. He's not perfect, but we need someone else besides racist, rabid Democrats who turn a blind eye to corruption.

Insurance Commissioner:

Robert Howell

Greg Conlon is a relentless perennial candidate who does not have a chance. Robert Howell is a long-standing conservative who has been fighting for this seat for a number of months. Also, Conlon is the go-to establishment candidate for the CAGOP Consultant class. This is tantamount to elder abuse at this point, since the CAGOP establishment keeps pushing this old guy to fill in for any statewide race that does not have  candidate. The guy is 90 years old! Vote for Howell.

Treasurer:

Jack Guerrero

Jack Guerrero is the man for this race. He has a long track record on finance issues. He is a Republican who has got elected three times in one of the bluest cities in one of the bluest counties in the state of California.

Andrew Do is a pro-health mandate RINO who has overseen the blue takeover of Orange County, CA. I have lost all respect for that man.

U.S. Senate:

Mark Meuser

Mark Meuser. He has fought the good fight for many conservatives throughout the state of California. He is somewhat of a perennial candidate, but at least he is willing to do the work of going around the state trying to make a case for his election bid.

Superintendent of Public Instruction:

Lance Christensen

Jim Gibson

George Yang

I have known George for a long time. He has taken the time and effort to reach out to people throughout the state. He works hard and will put in the necessary effort to win this seat. He is optimistic about his chances, but walks the walk, too.

Final Thoughts

I can't say that I have a lot of hope for this year, at least in California (well, it's not as though there is any hope for any year in California these days). The CAGOP has been so corrupted with the consultant-class hustle, but at least the political establishment is running out of statewide candidates who lose gracefully only to ensure that some well-connected consultant gets a paycheck for running a crappy campaign.

We'll see what happens after November 8th, 2022. Without a doubt, Republicans will take back the House of Representatives. Kevin McCarthy will be in line for the Speakership, although I think it's a great idea for the new bench of populist GOP House Reps to push for President Trump to be the Next Speaker of the House.

If McCarthy does get the gavel (and I am not too thrilled about that probability), that RINO Chairwoman Jessica Patterson will be gone, and some other RINO placeholder will jockey to take her place. I wonder who that could be ...
