Rep. Bob Good: A New Speaker Has Been Chosen

 

This week, Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson (LA) as the 56th Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mike Johnson is a true conservative who will fight for our values and priorities. He is a man of integrity, grounded in his deep personal faith. Speaker Johnson is also a strong leader who will stand up to President Biden, Democrats in the Senate, and the DC establishment. For too long, Washington politicians have put the special interests ahead of the American people who elected them. I believe that Speaker Johnson's election represents a renewed commitment by the Republican Party to do what we said we would do, when Americans trusted us with the House majority a year ago. Speaker Johnson has spoken of seven core principles that define the conservative Republican agenda: individual freedom, limited government, the rule of law, peace through strength, fiscal responsibility, free markets, and human dignity. Speaker Johnson immediately went to work after being sworn in. His first order of business was passing a resolution condemning the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel and supporting the right of Israel to defend itself. We then passed our fifth of 12 required annual spending bills, and he outlined a schedule to complete the remaining bills before the November 17 temporary funding deadline. Meanwhile, Democrats in the Senate have yet to pass even one appropriations bill. With the changes that were negotiated in January during the previous Speaker battle, we now have a new leader who will be an honest partner in doing everything possible to reverse the harmful policies that are destroying our country and the spending levels that are bankrupting our children’s future. Meetings in Washington  I met with Esme Grewal and Daryn Demeritt of BrightSpring Health Services to discuss the Department of Labor’s proposed overtime rule that will massively increase costs for their company. It is yet another example of Democrat policies that are driving inflation and hurting our economy. In the Media I did several local and national media interviews this week to discuss the Speaker's race and what it means for the future of our nation. Congressman Bob Good (R, VA-5) Update: Changing the Status-Quo in Washington

 

This week, the House of Representatives passed a motion that vacated the office of Speaker of the House and removed Kevin McCarthy from the position. I voted in favor of this motion, because former Speaker McCarthy failed to keep his promises to fight for the American people, failed to advance our conservative agenda, and failed to keep the commitments he made to become Speaker. [Bold type added] Former Speaker McCarthy did not use every tool at his disposal to fight against the radical Democrat agenda. He failed to keep his commitment to cut spending to pre-COVID levels. He made a deal with President Biden providing an unlimited increase to the debt limit, without significant spending reforms or reductions; and passed it with predominantly Democrat votes. He failed to keep his promise to bring our required 12 annual spending bills to the floor before the September 30 deadline. He blocked our Budget Committee from bringing our balanced budget to the House Floor for a vote. And, on September 30, he passed a temporary spending plan, or Continuing Resolution (CR), that maintains all of the Biden-Schumer-Pelosi policies that are destroying our country, and the spending levels that are bankrupting our children and grandchildren. This CR passed with Democrats voting 209-1 in the House and 51-0 in the Senate.  The country simply cannot afford the status quo. We need a Speaker who is a leader and a fighter, and who is determined to balance the budget, secure the border, and stop the radical Biden agenda. We need a Speaker who is willing to stand up to the Democrats and fight for the American people. Next week, House Republicans will come together to choose a new Speaker, and I urge my colleagues to back someone who will be a true champion for the American people.

In the Media This week I joined many local and national media outlets to explain my vote to remove former Speaker McCarthy and talk about what happens next in the Republican-led House of Representatives. Republicans must use the next few days to evaluate the candidates and determine who is best to lead us forward in a united effort to save our country.
