When the Lord instituted the Sabbath day, He intended for man to rest. However, many in the Body of Christ have misinterpreted the Fourth Commandment, neglecting the necessity of rightly dividing the Word of God (cf 2 Timothy 2:15).
What is the origin of the Sabbath, how was it originally presented to the Israelites, and what value or role does it play in the risen Body of Christ today?
Let's begin with how and why God the Father first instituted the Sabbath. In the beginning, He rested on the seventh day of Creation, but not because He was tired:
"Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
"And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." (Genesis 2: 1-3)
Here, God did not rest because He was tired, but because His work was finished.
