South Bay political leaders condemn decision to dump DACA

The Trump administration’s decision Tuesday to punt the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to Congress prompted strong criticism from South Bay elected officials to the immigration policy change that could affect tens of thousands of Californians.

Here’s a sample of the reaction from prominent local Democrats:

Sadly, where are any of the few remaining Republican elected officials?

Why haven't they had their say?

• Rep. Nanette Barragan, D-San Pedro: “I’m fired up and I’m angry about the decision the president made today on DACA. What about the promise the government made to these young people? They said, if you come forward and come out of the shadows, we’re going to protect your information. What about that promise?

Barack Obama lied to all of them, Cousin No No! And we took you down like a boss during your one little town hall in Carson because you were  more interested in pushing an left-wing, anti-Trump agenda instead of helping American citizens.

Now Cousin No No wants to make this a campaign issue so that she can keep stealing the Latino vote.

“I want every dreamer to know that I stand with them, that I’m going to fight like hell here in Congress to make sure that we protect them, to make sure we honor the promise that we made.

Do you stand with American dreamers? Their dreamers matter, since they are the ones this country's government is intended to protect.

“These people are doctors, are teachers, are neighbors; in my case, my cousin. I call on Congress and my colleagues across the aisle who have been speaking up on this issue in support of DACA protections to do more than speak, and to act, and to act now, and to act fast.”

If her cousin is in the United States illegally, why doesn't she adopt the cousin?

• Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Manhattan Beach: “As an immigrant to the United States — brought here when I was three years old — I know that our nation’s embrace of immigrants is what makes it great. Trump’s cowardly decision to end DACA goes against the very forces that have made America an exceptional country.

Immigrants, yes; but not illegal aliens. Lyin' Ted entered the United States legally.

“Deporting hundreds of thousands of Asians and Latinos — nearly half of whom were brought to the U.S. before the age of 7— is not only cruel, it will hurt our economy. One report estimates an economic loss of $460 billion over the next decade.

Lie. There is nothing cruel about a nation enforcing its immigration laws.

Nothing at all. Cruelty falls into the hands of the Democratic Party, which controlled all branches of government in 2009. That year, they even controlled a filibuster-proof majority in the US Senate, and yet they did NOTHING on immigration.

Two years prior, Barack Obama announced his vocal opposition to illegal immigration, and the need for the United States to secure the borders.

“I stand firmly with my Democratic colleagues to fight this action and do whatever we can to protect DREAMers. I call on Speaker Ryan to work with Democrats to extend the DACA program through legislation.”

Speaker Ryan does not have to work with anyone. He is the Speaker of the House. Will he have the guts, however, to do what is right for American citizens instead of pandering to illegal aliens while bending over for the Chamber of Commerce?

• South Bay county Supervisor Janice Hahn: “When I was in Congress, I helped local young people register for DACA. I saw them get into college. I saw them get their dream jobs. For the first time they dared to plan for bright futures and believe that the American dream applied to them.

Hahn needs to be arrested. She is part of the problem in Los Angeles County, pushing lawlessness and disregard for federal immigration laws. Where is the compassion for our homeless, for our veterans, for the disabled and mentally ill Americans in our communities, in Los Angeles County?!

What about the hundreds of thousands of young Californians looking for work? What about the black communities in South Los Angeles, which have endured unprecedented violence because of illegal aliens and their militant street gangs and drug cartels?

When will the Board of Supervisors take a serious stance against the drug trade and the addictions ravaging our cities? The drugs coming across the Southern Border have to stop. 

“AG Jeff Sessions claimed the decision to kill DACA was the American thing to do. I don’t buy that and neither should you. Being American means recognizing others’ success is part of the tide that lifts all boats and is not a threat to your own livelihood.”

I do not care what Hahn accepts or does not accept. She had no business working in league with treasonous actions to undermine the sovereignty and security of the United States and her citizens. Janice Hahn is a disgrace to her family name. Her father Kenneth Hahn worked hard for African-Americans, to ensure that their civil rights were honored and protected. Now she is undermining her father's legacy

• Los Angeles Councilman Joe Buscaino: “While the Trump administration attempts to pass the buck on this decision to Congress, we all know based on the evidence of the past eight months that it is unlikely Congress or the president will have the moral courage, negotiating skills or willpower to pass the DREAM Act within this arbitrary six-month deadline.

Joe Buscaino is another shameful sellout in the San Pedro region. He used to be a Republican, but switched his registration to make nice with the Big Labor bullies and the illegal alien panderers.

What has happened to this region? Working Americans of all backgrounds are being pushed to the background, while the rest of the country is thriving and working again! Enough! Buscaino is the city councilman for District 15 in California, not in Mexico, China, or the Middle East.

“In the meantime, over 223,000 hard-working DACA recipients in California and hundreds of thousands more nationwide will face the undue burden of fear and uncertainty as Congress and the president play politics with their lives, families, and jobs.

That is 223,000 illegal aliens too many in the state of California. Thanks for letting us know, Joe.

“Over 72% of Americans support allowing DACA recipients to stay in the United States, which further highlights the harsh and cruel nature of this morning’s decision to choose politics over American values and the lives of thousands of youth.”

No they do not. The more that we show the crime statistics tied to these young illegal aliens, the more that people will realize that this is a sham program which should never have been implemented.

Final Reflection

The media is brazenly corrupt in its complicity to push illegal immigration and to promote the concerns of the poor illegals while ignoring the needs of American citizens. We have so many young people who are struggling to find good paying jobs in California. I know many American Millennials who work two jobs just to save up for an over-priced education at a local college or university. What about their needs? What about their dreams? Don't they matter?

Advice About Politicians: Be Friendly, But Not Their Friends

One of things that I learned in political training:

"Have few friends who serve in office. If you can, don't have any friends who are elected officials."

I found such advice strict, even draconian.

Why would I not want to be friends with men and women who are fighting for me in elected office?

What I am learning slowly but surely is that far too many elected officials are not working for us. Political power is not firmly placed in our hands, but is sifting away into the third house.

Unbelievable. By "third house", I mean special interest money.

The money is flowing throughout Sacramento, and it's overflowing in Washington DC.

No wonder politicians can be very fickle, untrustworthy people.

But I realized from another perspective why it's wise to have as few politician friends as possible.

It's not just about general disdain for elected officials.

The concern is more than about unethical behavior or betrayal.

It's about leadership, ownership, and final authority.

What do I mean?

It comes down to this ...

I was a teacher.

In order to be effective, teachers have to correct their students. There are times in which students will be very angry with their teachers. Yet that is part of the job. The same holds true for parents raising their children.

If we treat students or our children like friends, we will struggle to discipline them, to make the right decisions, even though they are unpopular. Conflicts will arise over principled goals and proper outcomes.

It's About We the People
Not "They The Government"

The same is true for employers and their employees. They can be friendly, but at the end of the day the boss makes the decisions, and their workers must comply or leave. If we put our feelings and friendship into the mix, it becomes very difficult to make tough yet necessary decisions. Our feelings, our camaraderie gets in the way.

From the second set of examples I will draw the point clearly.

Our elected officials work for us. We do not work for them. It's as simple as that.

They are our employees. If I want to be their friends, then I will have a hard time telling them the truth, especially when they have done very bad things.

If I view them as employees, it makes it so much easier to hold them accountable for their bad votes, their lack of morals, or the complete absence of ethics in their training and decision-making.

Let's settle our hearts. Elected officials work for us. We can be friendly with some of them, but at the end of the day they must uphold the rule of law and protect our rights.

When they fail, we need to let them know, and not hold back our discontent.

Tolerance, Inclusion, Diversity Mean Nothing Without Clear Principles

Three terms are turning into the basis for political discourse and legitimacy in our times.

1. Tolerance.

2. Inclusion

3. Diversity

Yet these terms are losing their theme and value precisely because they have turned into pre-eminent virtues, ends in themselves, goals which everyone must abide by or be rejected. This approach, however, ignores the unintended consequences of political force attached to them. What does it mean to be tolerant, if those who do not agree with  you lose their jobs or lose opportunities to speak out on issues?

Let's look at Tolerance:

Pastor Jim Marguerite of Faith Community Church (West Covina) taught me an important principle about "tolerance."

"You have to believe in something, you have to have real backbone and stand for what you believe in, in order to be tolerant."

My father explained a similar distinction on this issue. "Tolerance" does not mean acceptance, nor does it mean that I have to welcome or promote a set of values or ideas in order to be tolerant. Even Jacques Derrida, the left-leaning Deconstruction philosopher, readily pointed out that tolerance does not create a radical equality of any kind in our society.

Tolerance cannot be a virtue without other virtues. Certain ideologies do not recognize tolerance of any kind. Islam stands out as a key example. What are essential values which apply to everyone? When those issues are determined, then tolerance is possible. As long as the natural rights of all individuals remains protected, then there is nothing to fear for those whose views are not dominant or mainstream in any society.

Tolerance is a Christian virtue. For tolerance to flourish, a respectful adherence to Christian principles is essential. Every human being has eternal value, is designed to bear the image of God. Individual have a right to freedom of speech, the press, to self-preservation, and to determine their own courses of success and/or destiny.

These values all fall within the Judeo-Christian ethic.

Now, individuals who do not share these views are entitled to them, but they must respect that everyone has these rights, and that they cannot be infringed or violated.

So ... tolerance as a value cannot exist without a comprehensive embrace of Judeo-Christian ones. Otherwise, tolerance becomes a masquerade in the public sphere, and a mask to persecute those who do not agree. In fact, tolerance is turning into a cudgel of intolerance.

All to justify "inclusion".

The name of this game--inclusion--is to ensure that no one is "excluded", marginalized, or made to feel like an "other."

Yet ironically, the more power and force applied to ensure inclusion, the greater the divides, the more pronounced the sense of exclusion. Consider the transgenderism agenda. Stores and some states have enacted a policy allowing biological men to enter women's bathrooms, even though such a measure puts women at risk. Women at a Washington State swimming pool objected to a male entering into their locker area to change, but the law which had just passed by the state legislature permitted this to happen!

The Target Corporation announced a transgender policy to allow customers to use the dressing rooms and bathrooms which conform with their gender identity rather than their biology. Instead of creating a more inclusive environment, however, these policies have de facto excluded the vast majority of people who are now threatened, placed at risk because of these dangerous policies. Ignoring distinctions in the name of inclusion has sharpened distinctions terribly, and at great cost to the individual integrity of young men and women.

The secular war on Christmas is another push for inclusion, based on the idea that people are easily offended and feel left out because they do not celebrate the holiday. So now it's a point of shame to wish someone a Merry Christmas? The rigid resistance to saying "Merry Christmas" to anyone creates a sense of exclusion. Why should anyone refrain from speaking what they feel for fear of someone else's feelings? Besides, saying "Merry Christmas" is not an intrusion.

Inclusion based on fantasy or fraud is a determined path to more exclusion and destruction. Inclusion based on shame and dishonor creates more exclusion. That is also wrong.

Then the last value, preempting a destruction of values: diversity.

Diversity of what kind? Why does requiring a recognition of everything make a different? Why does it matter? Differences of opinion do exist, but to demand that every opinion be recognized, with no final determinant for truth ... that is useless as well as abusive.

Points of view, ideological distinctions, anything which posits a final set of "intangible verities" is now roundly condemned. How can anyone distinguish one set of ideas from another without any clear distinctions of right and wrong, good and bad, poor and rich? The cultural Marxism of the university, bridled with the term "openness" has led to a less open, less diverse community. If there is no pursuit or reverence for truth, then diversity cannot hold.

Now let's get specific about the clear principles that matter.

1. Western Civilization is true repository of learning, depth, truth, expansion of liberty and wealth.
2. Freedoms of speech, self-preservation, and national sovereignty surpass the limited and even destructive customs of other cultures.
3. The Gospel, the foundation of Judeo-Christian values, form the backbone and foundation of Western Civilization and culture.
4. Learning means a dedication to a designed order, one which can be discerned and understood.
5. Understanding and growth are based on a voluntary association and transaction of ideas, not the threat of force, coercion, or death.

Diversity, Tolerance, and Inclusion are turning into meaningless, Orwellian tropes to create the opposite of what the words intend.

There can be no diversity without liberty to think.

There can be no inclusion--which matters--without a commitment to the values which prize key aspects of every human being, and reject the values and agendas which harm everyone while benefiting a few.

Tolerance--this is the most abuse word. A restive intolerance has become the norm, specifically in more liberal circles, which claim to embrace all three ideas enumerated above.
