This was a hard decision for me.
I recently learned that I was not the only one. In a previous post, I shared my frustration with both candidates, even though both are Republicans, and both are not woke crazy like many of the Democrats in Los Angeles or in Sacramento.
Such is the outcome when local politics gets detailed. We run into these people every day, we form stronger opinions about them, and we know more about them than the mere partisan label that guides our votes for state or national elections.
The breakdown was basic:
Sharon Kalani is running for spite, and she is backed up by some atrocious and disappointing interests in the city.
Creepy Pat Furey
Flabby Frank Scotto, who never ignored a tax increase
Liberals like Tom Brewer and other "Republicans" who have rejected bold leadership and want to play nice with Democrats and other political accommodationists.
Lots of liberal, pro-homeless industrial complex interests are getting behind Sharon, as well.
I am talking about LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn:
Supervisor Hahn wanted to force the Project Homekey corruption into the city of Torrance. People of all backgrounds rallied at the corner of Torrance and Madrona to stop this horrible idea. People who had never gotten involved in protests or activism rose up and said "NO!"
Clearly, the community did not want this, but the LA County Supervisors ignored Torrance residents. It took a lawsuit to end the horrid project.
Supervisor Hahn was behind the push for that awful program from the start.
Kalani is trotting out an endorsement from that out-of-touch politician as a benefit? As a win?
Bad timing, no sense of the city.
That is a deal-breaker for me.
I am also disgusted with her playing victim when I confronted her about the vote to move the Armed Forces Day parade to the Torrance airport. She played victim when she should have owned her mistake.
She also supported the SST sales tax increase. The city leadership should have been looking for innovative ways to speed up services, cut costs, and end the waste, fraud, and abuse in city government. There are too many six-figure salaried administrators in the police and fire departments. Why not lay them off and save millions?
Tax increases will never be the answer.
Kalani also voted to advance demands from Black Lives Matter in response to a lawsuit in 2022. They only had to consider the demands in a legislative committee, yet Kalani and former city councilwoman Heidi Ashcraft insisted on bringing the issue to the full council!
That is not leadership. That is capitulation. If we had another series of disruptions in the city council chambers from belligerent activists, I don't think a Mayor Kalani would handle the situation properly.
But most importantly, Indivisible South Bay, Democratic Socialists of America, and the Torrance Democratic Club are lining up openly behind Sharon Kalani. Everyone should worry about that. Indivisible activists got mad when I called out their violent rhetoric in the wake of the latest assassination attempt against President Trump.
The last thing this city needs is more left-wing agitators pulling the strings of our local politicians.
George has his fair share of issues, too, into which I already went into great detail.
I was resigned to sitting out the election, since both mayoral candidates have serious flaws of character and record.
But the latest assassination attempt against President Trump is too much to ignore.
And the Indivisibles Crowd in town is making excuses rather than taking responsibility.
I have attended numerous "No Kings" protests, including at least three in Torrance.
The signs are littered with profanity and violent rhetoric. A number of times, I have seen the number series 8647 on their protest signs. The false malign him as a rapist, a pedophile, a Nazi, a tyrant, and their violent calls for revolution and overthrow cannot be ignored.
And they cannot be tolerated.
We need to stop their bigotry, and we cannot allow their preferred candidates to win seats on the Torrance City Council.
Besides, four more years of Chen is not nearly as bad as eight years of Kalani.
Pretty easy choice at this point.
Vote for George Chen for Mayor.
