Libya has a New Neighbor -- and an Old Problem

Long after the Libyan Transitional Council assured the world that they would instate a democratic regime which respected human rights, the new government has begun normalizing relations with the genocidal "President" of Sudan Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir.

He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, as he targeted the Christian and animist minorities in Southern Sudan, which broke away and formed their own nation last year.

Libya just got rid of a blood-thirsty tyrant, and now they want to make overtures to another? The state of affairs in the Muslim World continues to grow dim and look grim.

Nation building and global intervention yield mixed results every time. When will the West learn to stay out of the irrational politics of the Middle East? The whole mess was enough to drive President Reagan to pull out a small retinue of Marines from Lebanon and pursue a policy of soft power and diplomacy with Russia.

He stayed out of Afghanistan; so should the next President. He avoided alienating our Western allies; so should the next chief executive. Whoever mans the helm as Commander in Chief would do well to follow the limited example of the Fortieth President, whether Republican or Democrat.
