New Mexico Democratic Party: Grassroots Corruption, Not Democracy

I cried on the way home. After my first Democratic ward meeting, I was mourning our democracy.

In the Democratic Party, delegates are elected to represent districts of their county known as wards. These delegates go on to represent you at the party’s pre-primary convention, during which candidates for the primary are voted onto the ballot and a policy platform for the state is determined.

My ward, 4D, met at the Center for Progress and Justice. While standing in line to get my ballot, I watched volunteers for gubernatorial candidates hand people preprinted cheat sheets of names. They then told attendees to write those lists of names on their ballot as their votes for delegates. Attendees were also asked to write these names in various orders, due to an unusual voting system that wasn’t explained to any of us. As a result, most people had written down their votes before the meeting had begun. After the meeting started, those nominated as delegates weren’t given a chance to address the room.

I witnessed several other acts which I later learned fall within the Democratic Party of New Mexico’s rules: filling in names on other people’s voting cards; nominating people who were not present; keeping people in the final running after they had left early; and the “card trick” – drawing the last two delegates by pulling playing cards from a suspiciously small deck.

Some of the ward meeting’s business did in fact violate the rules and guidelines for the Santa Fe County Democratic Party. I stood in front of the ward chair while she told a woman she could leave her ballot with someone else before the meeting began, which seems at the county level to qualify as proxy voting. And a representative of Congresswoman Michelle Lujan-Grisham, not a member of my ward, was recorded on video writing on other people’s ballots after the meeting started, with state Democratic Party official sitting in the same row.

These grievances might feel like a small and petty list from the observance of small and petty actions, but they are symptoms of a larger problem we need to address: Our habits are selfish and undemocratic.

Since President Donald Trump got elected, local activism and engagement across the country has increased after several decades of emptier and emptier meeting halls. Yet not many people recognize how their undemocratic – even authoritarian – behavior is burning bridges instead of building communities.

After expressing my concerns from my own ward meeting, several people across New Mexico told me stories of rules being selectively enforced in favor of Congresswoman Lujan-Grisham’s campaign for governor, ward chairs trying to force people to vote for particular delegates, using these cheat sheets, and even paying people to be delegates. If that last accusation is true, ward members are selling their vote and are no better than the politicians they accuse of representing private interests rather than communities. That’s grass-roots corruption, not democracy.

New Mexico GOP: Michelle Lujan Grisham Lies About Her Record (Surprise, Surprise!)

The Republican Governors Association sent out the following video, showing another reason why we can't trust Michelle Lujan Grisham.

VIDEO: New Mexico Dem Gov Candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham Caught Misleading Voters About Her Congressional Record

New Mexico Democrat gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham continues to play Washington political games with voters.

At a recent campaign event, Lujan Grisham gushed about how “it feels really good” to pass bills.

The problem? During her entire career in Congress, Lujan Grisham has failed to see any legislation that she authored signed into law. Not a single bill.

Now that she is running for governor, Lujan Grisham is trying to compensate for her lack of achievements by inflating her record, using the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as a partisan weapon, and cheerleading attempts to shutdown the government.

New Mexicans deserves better than another typical politician who fails to live up to her own rhetoric.

New Mexico GOP: New Mexico Democrats Corrupt and Crooked Like Hillary Clinton

First of all, I still remember the absolute chaos which took over the Nevada Democratic Party during the final delegate and nominating conventions in 2016. Bernie Sanders got clearly robbed on the convention floor. The Nevada Democratic Party leaders were determined to make Hillary Clinton the Presidential nominee at all costs.

And the cheated numerous times to make that happen.

Now Democrats are engaging in similar shenanigans in New Mexico, a state where net Republican voter registration has increased over Democratic registration.

DPNM Convention Unravels Into Chaos As Party Leaders Stack The Deck

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Democrats’ annual convention has unraveled into chaos just a few hours after being called into session. At least one candidate has have accused party leaders of stacking the deck to achieve their desired outcome, while another has described the convention activities as indefensible. It appears party leaders are doing whatever they can to ensure Michelle Lujan Grisham comes out on top in the race to earn the gubernatorial nomination – even if voters and party activists prefer someone else as their nominee.

Ryan Cangiolosi, New Mexico GOP Chairman

“Democrat leaders in New Mexico are doing everything they can to suppress the votes and voices of their party members in order to drag Michelle Lujan Grisham across the finish line,” said RPNM Chairman Ryan Cangiolosi. “New Mexico Democrats must have a very short memory to ignore the lessons of their party leaders attempting to rig the presidential primary in 2016. With multiple candidates are publicly decrying party leadership at their own convention, it’s clear that Democrats are fostering chaos rather than party unity.”

Earlier today, Peter DeBenedittis hurled accusations from the podium, alleging party leaders of breaking the rules and urging delegates to cast their votes against the party’s anointed candidate, Michelle Lujan Grisham:

Later, Joseph Cervantes called the convention ‘bedlam’ and declared there was ‘no possible way’ to defend the hours-long lines to vote and apparent payoffs made to ensure votes for certain candidates.

If this is a preview of things to come, Democrats should brace themselves for chaos and revolt throughout the campaign.

This is insane. Liberal and progressive activists want an honest party process, but Democratic leadership is pulling every string to frustrate the will of the party delegates. This is beyond untenable. Such chaos does not bode well for the New Mexico Democratic Party, which seems more interested in pushing the establish line than living up to its "democratic" name.

Let's hope that New Mexico Republicans can capitalize on this disunity with their own show of unity and Make New Mexico Great Again!

New Mexico GOP: New Mexican Republicans Win Despite "Blue Tsunami" Media Hype

This is great news.

New Mexico has sadly turned into a blue state.

But perhaps that blue is not as dark or deep as we had feared.

Check out how well Republicans did in the Land of Enchantment:

Republicans Win Big Across New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE – Local election results from across the New Mexico tonight confirmed that Republicans are in a strong position to compete and win statewide in November. In every region of the state, Republicans contested and won important local offices and proved that commonsense conservative principles appeal to voters of all backgrounds.

New Mexico GOP Chairman Ryan Cangiolosi

“These election results are a wake-up call to anyone who doubts that Republicans are ready and able to run winning campaigns across New Mexico,” said Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Ryan Cangiolosi. “While the chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico is using his party’s time and resources to attempt to silence a victim of sexual harassment and rig county conventions for his preferred candidate, our hardworking candidates and volunteers were pounding the pavement and knocking doors to elect Republicans up and down the ballot. Republicans are united and will not be outworked in 2018 and our efforts are already paying dividends.

Javier Sanchez, Mayor of Española

“Javier Sanchez will be Española’s first Republican mayor in decades. Rio Rancho mayor Gregg Hull won re-election after defeating a popular former two-term Democratic mayor. Roswell mayor, Dennis Kintigh also faced a strong challenge from a well-known former mayor and was also re-elected. Estancia elected a new mayor, Nathan Dial, while Dale Janway and Andy Nunez won re-election. Republicans won key races in the following counties – Santa Fe, Chaves, Lea, Otero, Rio Arriba, San Juan, Torrance and Sandoval.

“The Republican Party of New Mexico congratulates all of our candidates and we thank them for their tireless commitment to our communities and our state. We will carry this momentum forward and continue our hard work to elect Republicans across the state in November.”
