Contact the Christian Colleges: Demand They Retract Their Silent Consent to SB 1146

Save California has released another call to action to stop SB 1146:

How you can easily fax and mail Jerry Brown
Urge Brown to protect religious freedom by vetoing SB 1146

Good news -- you have a chance to see the anti-religious-freedom bill SB 1146 vetoed. Here's how you can play your part:

Realize that California Governor Jerry Brown, at age 78, is old enough to remember when Democrat politicians all said "separation of church and state."

Brown has until September 30 to sign or veto SB 1146. Please jump in and help SaveCalifornia.com generate a flood of veto letters, faxes, and calls. Use our sample letter

Governor Brown's main phone where you can leave messages during regular business hours is 916-445-2841. His fax is 916-558-3160. His mailing address is Governor Jerry Brown, State Capitol, Suite 1173, Sacramento, CA 95814.

INSTRUCTIONS: Copy and paste the sample letter below into a writing document; edit as you wish; replace the date; sign and print your name; carefully proof your letter; print it on 1 sheet of paper; print this 2-page analysis of SB 1146 (https://t.co/TEo96PNqi2); both fax and mail your three pages total to Governor Jerry Brown. His mailing address is below and his fax number is 916-558-3160. On faxes, write in the upper right hand corner "3 pages total to 916-558-3160."

PLEASE DO NOT SEND THE 2-PAGE ANALYSIS TO GOVERNOR BROWN THROUGH HIS WEB FORM. TO BE EFFECTIVE, YOUR 1-PAGE LETTER PLUS THE 2-PAGE ANALYSIS (3 PAGES TOTAL) MUST ONLY BE FAXED OR SENT BY POSTAL MAIL.

SAMPLE LETTER -- MAKE IT YOUR OWN, ON YOUR OWN STATIONERY

Ask your friends and local pastors to mail and fax letters; letters on personal stationery or official letterhead carry more impact

I also encourage everyone to contact these colleges and demand that they rescind their support for SB 1146!

California's Christian Colleges Caved: Call Them to Change Their Minds!

California Senate Bill 1146 — the “Kill Christian Colleges” bill — was bad from the outset. The legislation, crafted by the corrupt State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), contained the following requirements:

  • Limitations of the Title IX exemptions to only specifically religious instruction
  • Options for liability claims for LGBT students claiming discrimination
  • Removal of CalGrants for colleges which violate the “rights” of LGBT students.
  • Reporting requirements from the colleges for students expelled for violating the moral code of the college
  • Extravagant publishing requirements to inform students of their Title IX exemptions, i.e. public shaming.

The outpouring of outrage was immediate.

Grassroots organizations pushed back against this abusive intrusion of the state.

One state legislator informed me, however, that the  Christian colleges were late in stopping SB 1146, even though they were directly affected, along with their students.

Poor and minority students would have been particularly affected, losing the essential CalGrants for the tuition to these select universities.

Residents, Christians, the Church throughout the state of California hammered legislators with phone calls.

California MassResistance pressed on lawmakers in their offices. State Senator Ricardo Lara received two massive visits to his office. The first time, his staff blew off fifty people, more than half of whom were constituents in his district! The second time, his staffers had to submit and endure the fervent upset of a wide variety of his constituents, from Huntington Park to Long Beach.

Still, the Christian colleges were late to the game. They raised $350,000 to target key assemblymembers, including committee chairs like Lorena Gonzalez of San Diego. The pressure worked. Lawmakers in the state assembly were feeling the heat, and seeing the light.

Contacts working behind the scene informed me and MassResistance President Brian Camenker that a number of legislators were fed up with the constituents calling for an end to the bill. They could not vote for the bill in its full, aberrant, and abhorrent form.

Then a deal was struck.

The Christian colleges would go along with the bill, if the limitations on Title IX were removed, the CalGrants remained available to all students, and the liability options were removed.

The Christian colleges, with all their political power, with the grassroots power growing behind them and fighting for them, backed off. They had the enemies under their feet, they were stepping on their necks. Instead of doubling down and demanding the complete removal of the legislation …

They caved.

They should have memorized those passages in Romans 8: 31-37.

Because of Jesus, God is for us, not against us.

We are not lambs lead to the slaughter, but more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

Instead of fighting all the way, they gave way.

The state assembly appropriations committee passed the bill, with some onerous parts removed. Ricardo Lara was lambasted on major mainstream media outlets up and down the state.

Religious institutions, conservative think-tanks, and right-leaning blogs claimed victory.

Indeed, the success of forcing a radical, regressive homosexual activist to give up key portions of his signature legislation was an accomplishment.

But the Christian colleges needed to continue the fight.

The Left is like the proverbial evil man who cannot sleep on his bed unless he has plotted evil for the next day (Psalm 36:4). They don’t rest. Why should we? “The price for liberty is eternal vigilance.”

The Christians, the conservatives, and the concerned citizens in general did not stop fighting SB 1146.

The bill was brought to the floor of the state assembly. At the third reading, another portion was taken out of the bill. The “mandated reporting” requirement turned out to violate federal privacy laws.

So, SB 1146 turned into a shell of its self, but still carried with it the latent intrusion of the government into the private affairs of Christian colleges. Each institution would have to publish extravagant guidelines and disclaimers outlining to all prospective and currents students, along with staff and administration, the Title IX exemptions claimed by the institutions. This burden amounts to public shaming, an unreasonable demand not expected of other universities!

Lara swore, from the moment that he had to back away from the key provisions of his initial bill, that he would return during the next legislative session to draft and submit a more severe piece of legislation The Christian colleges apparently do not take into account this threat.

Constituents continued their calling, their harping, their demands on the legislature.

Those attacks were working.

On the Assembly floor, SB 1146 initially failed! This bill needed 41 votes to pass, and the first roll call mustered only 33. The bill was put “on call”, and the arm-twisting ensued Eventually, the bill would pass, with only 45 votes, three Democrats voting no, seven Democrats abstaining, and sadly one Republican supporting the bill.

Then off to the state senate.

August 30th, 2016—SB 1146 did not appear on the state senate’s agenda on the floor.

Then at about 6:00pm, Lara drew the bill from an “inactive file”.

Lara read off the amendments, seeking concurrence from his colleagues.

His chief argument? The Christian colleges “now support this bill.”

The same argument had augured the bill to the assembly floor.

Four state senators spoke up in opposition to this bill. FOUR! Their talking points about the legislation were accurate and prescient. Senator Jim Nielsen reminded his colleagues that Lara would bring forward the same officious elements stripped from the bill next year. Senator Ted Gaines urged a No vote. Senator John Moorlach praised the faith community for rising up to stop this bill. Here are Senator Jeff Stone’s comments.

State Senator John Moorlach rises for the First Amendment

SB 1146 passed 25-13. One Democrat abstained.

Now the bill sits on Governor Jerry Brown’s desk, and he will very likely sign it.

The “Christian” colleges supported a bill which would fundamentally undermine their mission and religious liberty in the state of California. Imagine what would have happened if the Christian colleges had stood their ground on principle!

Now, California’s Christians will never know.

Call these California Christian colleges.

Inform them of your disappointment, and demand that they change their minds and urge Governor Brown to veto SB 1146.

California: Where Christian Colleges Die, or Where Christian Education Resurrects?

Christianity is under attack.

The progressive left will stop at nothing until freedom of religion is limited to freedom of worship, and all public professions of faith are sanctioned, silenced, then eliminated.

The battleground for this fight?

California, the formerly Golden State, now the Land of Progressive Tyranny.

One specific lawmaker has been pushing this perverse agenda onto the state's 38 million residents.

State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-California) ... and he is an intolerant bigot.

Born to illegal aliens, he promotes illegal aliens over citizens. Openly gay, he demands that everyone else accept homosexuality as a new identity.

Lawlessness and immorality define his distorted worldview, especially against Christians, and the Judeo-Christian culture on which our nation is founded.

His latest bill, SB 1146, would have effectively shut down Christian education in California. The bill would have provided relief, i.e. open up lawsuits, for homosexual/transgender students claiming discrimination. The bill would have also limited the scope of the Title IX exemptions which the colleges currently claim.

In effect, Christian colleges would have to:

1. Allow men into women's facilities
2. Accommodate the Regressive Left's redefinitions of marriage, sexuality, and gender.
3. Limit their teaching and preaching on these subjects

This is outrageous. The state has neither right nor authority to dictate to any person, or private institution their beliefs.

Christian communities throughout the state began raising the alarm against this tyrannical overreach.

Like the armies of Joshua blowing horns around the walls of Jericho, they marched around exposing the secularist state legislature (especially arrogant state senator Lara) their schemes to strictly limit Title IX exemptions and drive faith and values out of the public sphere.

They achieved some success.

Lara’s decision came after a half-dozen universities formed a new committee called the Assn. of Faith Based Institutions and contributed $350,000.

The group raised $350,000!

That's not chump change.

They spooked high-ranking Democrats in Sacramento.

That's no small feat.

They were not alone in the activist efforts, either:

The new flexing of political weight is in addition to lobbying that has been done on behalf of 32 universities by a group called Assn. of Independent California Colleges and Universities.

The fundraising, the lobbying, the calls, the connections--all of it pounded Senator Lara and his Democratic cohorts.

It's just like the Israelites who watched the walls of Jericho crumble from their shouting.

The Daily Signal reported a win for pro-family conservatives.

But instead of going full victory--killing SB 1146 outright--these pro-family groups have claimed victory from one part of the bill removed.

But two very pernicious parts remain.

1. The Christian colleges must conspicuously publish their application and approval for Title IX exemptions.

2. The colleges will have to file a report to the state every time they expel a student for violating their moral codes.

One question: what agency has to submit to such overbearing, overreaching regulations?

For the record, the student whom Senator Ricardo Lara relied on for a sympathy vote to pass SB 1146, is not exactly worthy of such sympathy. Learn more about the sordid history of the expelled student Antonio Villarreal here.)

The fight against SB 1146 is not over.

The walls have fallen down, but the city has not been taken.

But have the Christian colleges caved in this fight?

Jonathan Keller of the California Family Council contended on social media:

The Democrats have an overwhelming 52-28 majority in Sacramento. They can pass #SB1146 in its original form (or much worse) if they want to do so.

No. Some Democrats are facing a challenging general election fight. They depend on donations from with constituents and special interests.

Also, as noted above, the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities raised an incredible amount of money which spooked the legislators.

Keller continued:

[T]he fact that we have been able to build common ground with moderate Democrats like Lorena Gonzales and Luis Alejo should be cause for gratitude. Pro-family citizens should work within the political system and both flex their muscles but also extend an olive branch to those who are being educated on the value of religious liberty.

Christian leaders sought "common ground" with moderate Democrats? This is wrong. The politicians who are trying to destroy liberty need to be removed from office, not accommodated.  Christians should not be seeking common ground--or compromise--on First Amendment rights. PERIOD!

In the Bible, the Israelites were told to utterly destroy the demonic inhabitants of Jericho, not co-exist. Liberty cannot coexist with tyranny, but must be victorious.

Or become the next victim.

Furthermore, power depends not sheer numbers, but principled organization and effort.

Consider Christian citizen-patriot Samuel Adams:

It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

The Word of God is more powerful:

“Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few." (1 Samuel 14:6)

Twelve Apostles shared the Good News of One Savior, and the world is still shaking, growing in grace and truth!

Therefore, the capitulation of California’s Christian colleges over SB 1146 is unconscionable.

The Declaration of Independence talks about "inalienable" rights.

That means that the government cannot take them away.

Our God-given rights come with no strings attached, and none should be attached.

Why did the Christian Colleges stop short of total victory? Why offer an “olive branch” to the other side so quickly?

God gave the Israelites the Promised Land, but the generation of unbelief settled for wandering in the wilderness.

Today, a new generation of Christians, who see their identity in Christ, not in their efforts; who trust in His grace, not in their law-keeping, must not settle for less.

To their provision credit, some Christian college leaders signaled that they would read the language of the new bill before giving their approval. Nevertheless, there is no pulling punches in this First Amendment fight. Lara pledges to reintroduce strict limitations on Christian colleges next year!

The Body of Christ needs to be bold, just like the Joshua Generation, and “possess our possessions” in Christ (Obadiah 1:17).

California’s Christian colleges must pledge to defeat SB 1146, and demand that such monstrous, tyrannical intrusions never surface again as potential legislation.

California: Fruity Nuts Taking Advantage of Naive Christians?

State Senator Ricardo Lara (D-California) is an intolerant bigot.

He identifies as homosexual, and demands that everyone else accept this coarse lifestyle as a new identity.

He was born to two illegal alien parents, and wants to promote illegal aliens ahead of citizens today.

Where is the social justice in these perverse goals?

Lawlessness and immorality are his defining characteristics, coupled with an unheard of preeminence to push his distorted worldview on everyone else.

Especially against Christians, and the Judeo-Christian culture on which our nation, and the state of California are founded.

2. Accommodate the Regressive Left's redefinitions of marriage, sexuality, gender, and life.
3. Limit the scope of their teaching and preaching on these subjects

This is outragaeous. The state has neither right nor authority to dictate to any person, or private institution the values which they abide by.

The Christian Community up and down the state began raising the alarm against this tyrannical overreach.

Like the armies of Joshua circling the walled city of Jericho, they marched around, blowing their horns, announcing to the world that the state legislature, under the direction of arrogant homosexual state senator Lara, was going to strictly limit Title IX exemptions and drive their faith and values into the closet.

Instead of lying down to put up it with it, though, Christian colleges and pro-family activist groups around the country hammered the state legislature, and put the pressure individual lawmakers

The Los Angeles Times reports:

Lara’s decision came after a half-dozen universities formed a new committee called the Assn. of Faith Based Institutions and contributed $350,000.

The group has flooded the districts of members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, including Chairwoman Lorena S. Gonzalez (D-San Diego), with mailers saying the bill violates religious freedoms and urging voters to contact their Assembly person.

“Stop state control of private education,” says one mailer to Gonzalez’s constituents. Her committee is scheduled to vote on the bill Thursday.

Association President Kristen F. Soares said she wants to see the final language before making a firm statement but said the group will likely end up supporting the bill as amended.

The fundraising, the lobbying, the calls, the connections--all of it pushed Ricardo Lara and his Democratic cohorts.

It's just like the Israelites who watched the walls of Jericho crumble from their shouting.

But instead of going in for full victry--killing SB 1146 outright, these pro-family groups have claimed a resulting victory with one part of the bill removed.

But two very pernicious parts of the bill remain.

The fight is not over. The walls have fallen down, but the city has not been taken.

SaveCalifornia commented:

The facts are the facts -- the amended SB 1146 harms religious freedom:

The Christian college presidents didn't know how to fight at first. They trusted in "reason" and spent time "reasoning" with the homosexual activist Democrat state senator author (Ricardo Lara), and then "reasoning" with immoral Democrat committee members. Then they did a political action committee (which was good and admirable) and pummeled certain assemblymembers in their districts, including Assembly Appropriations chair Lorena Gonzalez. When the good news came on Wednesday that the lawsuit portion of the bill would be removed, everyone with a little experience in State Capitol doings knew SB 1146 was in trouble. The Christian college presidents should have said nothing -- and just poured on more pressure on the deciding votes. But instead they caved and pandered to the homosexual activist bill author, saying he was their "partner" and that they were "grateful" for him. Not knowing the enemy and not going for the kill (killing SB 1146 when it was down), they instead did the inexplicable by exchanging their warrior clothes for that of a beggar, forgetting that strength, not weakness, defends religious freedom, family values, and homeschooling. Their news release SUPPORTING the amended SB 1146 was embarrassing and sad to read:

No, the Christian college presidents who support the amended SB 1146 with its remaining bad language do not have opinions worth respecting, because they contradict the facts that the amended SB 1146 infringes upon religious freedom, and invites future oppression. They should have said "hands of religious colleges" and meant it, entertaining no compromise that would endanger students, their identity as Christian campuses, and religious freedom for everyone else. To support the amended SB 1146 is more than a mistake, it's ignorant of the pervasive agenda of intolerant and tyrannical homosexual-bisexual-transsexual activists. Anyone who supports religious freedom should be able to read the facts of how the amended SB 1146 threatens religious freedom and oppose it, not support it:

Indeed, a bad bill is a bad bill.

Jonathan Keller of the California Family Council responded:

The Democrats have an overwhelming 52-28 majority in Sacramento. They can pass #SB1146 in it's original form (or much worse) if they want to do so.

That statement is not true. A number of Democrats are facing a challenging general election fight. They also rely on donations and face-time with constituents and special interests.

Also, as noted above, the Assn. of Independent California Colleges and Universities had raised an incredible amount of money which spooked the legislators.

Keller continued:

I agree that Senator Lara is a hardened and committed activist. Apart from the grace of God, Lara will not be persuaded to change his mind. But the fact that we have been able to build common ground with moderate Democrats like Lorena Gonzales and Luis Alejo should be cause for gratitude. Pro-family citizens should work within the political system and both flex their muscles but also extend an olive branch to those who are being educated on the value of religious liberty.

This is wrong. The people who are trying to destroy liberty need to be removed from office, and they need to know that they will be out of a job if they attack our natural rights.

What's more disconcerting, however, is that the Christian leaders sought to build "common ground" with moderate Democrats.

Honestly, Christians should not be seeking common ground--or compromise--on First Amendment rights. PERIOD!

The Israelites were told to utterly destroy the demonic inhabitants of Jericho, not co-exist with them. Liberty cannot coexist with tyranny, but must be victorious.

Or become the next victim.

By the way, political influence depends on more than sheer numbers, but principled organization and effort.

Consider Christian citizen-patriot Samuel Adams:

It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.

Twelve Apostles shared the Good News of One Savior, and the world is still shaking, growing in grace and truth!

But the capitulation of the Christian colleges only gets worse:

Jonathan Keller continued:

There is a MASSIVE difference between homeschoolers and these Christian colleges.

I agree that the right to educate your own children is fundamental and nigh inviolable. But the right to use government funds to do so is not. That's why nearly every homeschooling family rejects all local, state, and federal funding. They almost always come with "strings" attached.

The exact same principle applies here. Some universities (Hillsdale College, for example) have chosen to forgo all local, state, and federal funding due to the the requirements attached to the funding. Other colleges, including many here in California, have choses to claim the Title IX exemption offered by the federal government while continuing to participate in our state’s Cal Grant program. Like ANY form of government funding, Cal Grants do come with “strings” attached.

I do not attack any Christian parents who believe they can faithfully use government vouchers to educate their children. Nor do I attack these Christian colleges who believe they can use the Cal Grant program to faithfully educate their students. But in either case, both the homeschool parents and the Christian schools realize that government funding means some amount of government control or oversight, however small.

It is foolish for parents, colleges, or pro-family advocates to think that we can accept any government funding without any government mandates.

Full disclaimer:

Jonathan Keller is not complicit with the Christian colleges, but opposes SB 1146, even as amended.

As for the Christian colleges, they need a refresher course on American civics.

The Declaration of Independence talks about "inalienable" rights.

That means that the government cannot take them away. The GI Bill for veterans served as a voucher for our military heroes to pursue a worthy education at any post-secondary institution.

There were NO strings attached, and none should have been attached.

What is going on in the pro-family movement in the state of California?

God gave the Israelites the Promised Land, but the generation of unbelief settled for wandering in the wilderness.

Today, a new generation of Christians, those who see their identity in Christ, not just in their efforts, who trust in His grace, not in their law-keeping, are not going to settled for this.

Now, to qualify these remarks.

A number of the college leaders signaled after Lara's first capitulation that they would read the language of the new bill.

There can be no measured approach about this fight. Lara pledges to return to this fight next year.

Christians  must pledge to defeat SB 1146, not capitulate, and demand that such monstrous intrusions on our liberty never pass, or even surface as potential legislation.
