Letter to the Editor: School Districts Ask Parents to Front the Costs

(Response to California Schools Are Going Broke -- No Surprise There!)

Mr Schaper-

I read your article on California school financing today. and based on the content I felt I should share a couple of anecdotes from my past (although you may already be familiar with both these examples)-

My daughter attended the Palos Verdes School district for 11 years and graduated from Pennisula High in 2016. During that time I had two interactions with the district that clearly defined the district's overall priorities.

The first occurred when I called the District office to register my daughter as a new student. After a couple rings, the automated "phone tree" offered several options to choose from. The first option stated "If you are a teacher with a payroll issue, please press 1." I found it quite telling that the number one district phone priority was staff payroll issues.

The second occurred anytime my wife or I called my daughter's school to report her absent due to illness. Each time the answering machine provided directions on how to properly report our child's abscence, including a requst that we write a check to cover the lost revenue related to our childs abscence. I forget the exact amount but it was around $90 a day. I always laughed at this silly request, but once again it demonstrated the district priorities regarding my daughter's education.

As I said, you may have already heard these stories, but if not I thought it was worth my time to share these real world examples of California school district policies.

Thank you,

Dave Skinner

----------

Mr. Skinner:

Thank you so much for your letter.

The phone tree anecdote I have never heard before. It sounds par for the course, sadly.

Teachers' unions hold incredible political sway over school districts, which is a crime, since most of the teachers don't live in the district; therefore, it's not their taxes paying for the schools!

Regarding the school's arrogant request that you compensate them for your daughter's absence, I have heard similar stories, and they all need to be reported.

Of course, the wealthier, higher-performing school districts like Palos Verdes USD are getting the shaft when it comes to state funding, so of course the district has to ask parents to chip in. I live in the South Bay (Torrance!), so I am all too aware of the Ed Foundations needed to help districts cover costs.

It's so unfair!

Top Ten Reasons to Vote for Ken Wright for Congress

Dr. Kenneth Wright of Marina Del Rey, by way of Torrance and working in Beverly Hills, is running for Congress against the radical regressive Ted Lieu.

I have confronted Lieu during campaign stops.

When he appeared at the Torrance City Council to discuss the hydro-fluoric acid controversy at ExxonMobil, I called him out for doing nothing for all of us, and for doing nothing to stop illegal immigration in California.

Dr. Wright has written an extensive set of reasons why everyone in the 33rd Congressional District--especially Democrats--should vote "No" to Ted Lieu and "YES" for Dr. Ken WRIGHT!

Top 10 reasons Democrats should Vote Wright:

1. Lieu petitions to bring 200,000 Syrian Iraqi refugees this year and votes against the SAFE Act for extended background checks- Dr. Wright is for keeping America safe with refugee safe camps in the Middle East.

2. Lieu sponsors No Money Bail bill so criminals go free without bail – Dr. Wright wants fair law enforcement to protect citizens.

3. Lieu votes against the VA Accountability Act (twice) to improve health care for veterans – Dr. Wright is for reform to ensure quality health care for our veterans.

4. Lieu withdrew from all 2016 candidate forums / debates (League of Women Voters and Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce) – Dr. Wright showed up for all the debates and is for true transparency and open communication.

5. Lieu wants to make the beaches from Malibu to Palos Verdes (including Santa Monica) a Federal Reserve – Dr. Wright wants a clean ocean that is maintained and controlled by the local people of L.A. County.

6. Lieu, a career politician, takes big business PAC money including from: Great Far East (a real estate investment firm with extensive ties to China), Ernst & Young, Wells Fargo, Pacific Life, Farmers Insurance, big pharma, defense companies, - Dr. Wright, a caring physician and not a career politician, only receives donations from individual supporters, no corporations.

7. Lieu votes to support Obamacare – Dr. Wright wants to replace Obamacare with a system that reduces premiums and deductibles and allows free choice of plans and doctors.

8. Lieu talks about supporting Israel but actually votes Nay against NDAA (US-Israel Defense Funding, Victims of Iranian Terrorism Act, NO prohibiting the president from reducing sanctions on Iran – Dr. Wright considers Israel our most important ally in the Middle East and full supports Israel.

9. Lieu claims the environment is important BUT co-authored a bill (CA ABX381 to bypass environmental regulations in order to build a stadium. The developer donated $13K to his campaign. Dr. Wright believes in integrity and honesty.

10. Lieu has missed 10.2% of congressional votes which is much worse than the median of 2.3% - Dr. Wright takes responsibilities seriously- he shows up.

OH- ONE MORE THING – Dr. WRIGHT SURFS!

Let's keep it very simple:

VOTE FOR KEN WRIGHT FOR CONGRESS!
