Manmade goals are just that: manmade, and therefore corruptible. God wants better for His children:
"Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once
more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
"And this
word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are
shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may
remain.
"Wherefore we
receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may
serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear" (Hebrews 12: 26-28)
To be Spirit-led is the real calling for every person. If we try to map out our own lives, we get what we want, and we are empty. Or we do not get what we want, and we are frustrated.
Yet in schools, in communities, in many families, children are told that they must come up with goals. What do you want out of life? Parents, teachers, counselors, ask their children?
The goal of the Christian life is not reaching a goal, for in Christ we are more than conquerors. The issue for men and women who have been saved by the grace of God through faith is not rising to a place of prominence, but to bear fruit of righteousness, to live out the salvation that God has worked in.
We are a new Creation in Christ, for as He is, so are we in this world. We are not trying to make a name for ourselves in this world, for we have been adopted into the Family of God:
"But as many as received
him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that
believe on his name:
"Which were born, not of
blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. " (John 1: 12-13)
In Christ, we have a new identity, to be children of light. Light is the ultimate standard, and we walk in the light of God. Believers are not seeking to become the light, for they already are light:
"Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the
night, nor of darkness." (1 Thessalonians 5:5)
Once again, what is the source of this light?
"In him [Christ] was life; and the
life was the light of men." (John 1: 4)
Men are dead in their trespasses. To overcome this death, they create goals, missions, standards to reach, as a means of goading themselves to wake up and get going. When a man reaches the top, when he achieves what he wanted to achieve, what does he have at the end?
"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own
soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Matthew 16: 26)
For many who have "succeeded" according to the patterns and dictates of the world, they get to the top, and they are disappointed. No matter what we are, have, or do, we are dead. Reaching our goals, getting to the destination that we set out to reach, we are still dead. Only the Life and Light of Christ in us warms us, completes us, satisfies us. Then as the Spirit lives and directs us, we find ourselves invested in the things that He has made us for, events, activities, goals which expend his glory, which invigorate us. Jesus Christ demonstrated this after witnessing to the Samaritan woman at the well:
"In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
"But he
said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
"Therefore said the
disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
"Jesus
saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish
his work." (John 4: 31-34)
Jesus is nourished in nourishing us, and in turn we can then nourish others, bear fruit, serve in the fullness of life. Jesus explained this to the woman at the well earlier:
"Jesus answered and said
unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
"But
whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but
the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up
into everlasting life. " (John 4: 13-14)
This water of life is the Holy Spirit, who not only gives us life, but then offers us life to live out for others. And this life is a never-ending, ever-nourishing flow!
We do not to reach a destination, we do not need to meet a need for ourselves, we do not need to make little goals for ourselves. We are called to live out the life that Christ lives in us!
