On Lanzmann's "Shoah"

“What do you want me to do, cry? As long as I am alive, I choose to laugh!” – Shoah

This quote was conspicuously missing from the Jewish Journal's article, “An Indelible Film”.

I think that the story of the Polish Holocaust Survivor who refused to move away from the death camp and who refused fit into the model of empty and angry victim commands the most respect – at least to me.

This the bold attitude that we need to see in this world – not the defeatist rhetoric which unjustifiably assumes that evil will have the last laugh,  but that no matter what evil men may perpetrate, the good, the happy, the humorous, will have the last laugh.

Why cry? I choose to laugh!!
