Rick Santorum has run a simple campaign, due in part to the fact that he has attracted very little interest, aside from die-hard social conservatives looking for a dyed-in-the-wall GOP back-burner with "Leave it to Beaver" moxie.
This "aw-shucks" charm does not command any respect. He says all the right things to most voters, and he has even gained the side-tracked attention of social critic Glenn Beck, but what campaign does he have? What chances, what skills, what panache has Santorum demonstrated to an electorate looking for more than the right suit in the right fit?
Traditional values are a a core factor in commandeering a sizable chunk of the GOP voting bloc, but every candidate has demonstrated a dignified adherence to this pack of conservative constituents, even though the personal flippancies of Gingrich, the idiosyncrasies of Bachmann, and the skeptical change of heart in Romney have not sold anyone.
Yes, it would be in his best interests if he bowed out of the race if he polled in last place. In fact, it would be in the best interests of the party and the nation if he bowed out right now without endorsing anyone.
Despite the middling options before the American people, a competent Republican nominee will surface, one with the qualifying credentials to take down Obama and take this country back into freedom and prosperity, free of a meddling government gone socialist-lite.
