"Another View: Cut jobless benefits, raise farm subsidies?" -- Response to Whittier Daily News
Not question about it, farm subsidies should be cut. Corporate welfare is an obscene waste of taxpayer money. So is the ongoing extension of unemployoment benefits.
It is necessary for individuals not to draw on unemployment benefits in the wake of the ongoing anemic recovery.
A number of firms have admitted in the past that they have work to offer, but most prospective employees turn down the jobs because the unemployment benefits surpass the offered salary.
In other instances, there are employees who receive unemployment benefits while still working part-time, despite the availability of more hours to work. Many cannot resist an extra day of vacation paid by the state.
The drying up of unemployment benefits is not in itself a bad thing. In time, as the 99 weeks of free money falls away, more people will settle for a job rather than waiting around for something that suits their minute tastes.
This elitism ishas motivated many middle-class entitled and unemployed marching in Occupy Everywhere. They refuse to work anywhere not in the pedigree with the four-year degrees that they have earned from an august institution.
Yet such stuffy, stiffened attitudes only undermine the much-needed work ethic which many people need to develop, regardless of the ideal employment which they seek.
