Since when has the government, state or federal, insisted by its own power that businesses must prepare a system of finance to compensate workers hurt on the job?
This is the crass monstrosity of trial lawyers dead-set on scrounging for one more venue to sue, sue, sue!
Workers deserve to be protected, they can negotiate for proper reimbursements in the event of injury or disability. However, expecting businesses to foresee problems on the job and subsidize every harm done is just one more step toward business-busting and regulations that are chocking merchants out of existence or chasing them out of the state.
If employees are so concerned about their well-being on the job, then let them contribute a portion of their salary to a company insurance conglomerate. Why not provide incentives through Health Savings Accounts, in which employers can remunerate careful and conscientious employees for avoiding accidents and pitfalls while working? Such a system would discourage the fraud endemic to these state insurance programs.
Sacramento must get out of the business of butting into businesses' business. It's just common sense -- a very uncommon verity in California politics.
