On this day in 1787, delegates to the Federal Convention in Philadelphia signed their names to a written constitution designed to safeguard the natural rights of the American people.
Leaving the convention hall, Benjamin Franklin was asked by a woman whether the delegates had created a republic or a monarchy. Franklin responded, “A republic, ma’am — if you can keep it!” Our United States Constitution recognizes that our rights are not bestowed by government but are endowed by God. It establishes a framework to protect our freedoms through the separation of powers, checks and balances and the Bill of Rights (adopted during the 1st Congress).
The Constitution was created by the individual states and it intentionally reserved all powers not affirmatively delegated to the federal government to the states. This concept of federalism recognizes that the states are the primary entities for making policy and for protecting individual freedom. When the federal government expands beyond its proper authority and infringes on the prerogatives of the states, it is the duty of each state to fight back and defend its interests.
I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and I fight daily to do just that. We’ve seen Joe Biden and his Administration continuously violate the Constitution and the principles our country was founded upon, and I am fighting back on all fronts and will continue protecting and defending our freedom.
Preserving our Constitution requires perpetual vigilance by the American people. As President Reagan once said, freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. And on this Constitution Day, we should be mindful of the threats posed to our freedoms and be resolved to demonstrate the courage and determination necessary to confront these threats.
