If Hermosa Beach wants to invite greater scrutiny of private perversion, limiting the outrageous nightlife, and alcohol-induced criminality, is a better move than outlawing smoking all over the city.
Hermosa Beach nightlife is teeming with public disturbances, including driving under the influence and public urination. Such unseemly and unsanitary behavior wars against the safety and sanctity of a community which deserves some measure of peace and quiet. Moral micromanaging is inappropriate at any level of government. If individuals insist on smoking, they ultimately harm themselves. However, every person deserves the modicum assurance that walking down the street or sleeping in their beds, they will not have to fend off noisy or noisome disturbances.
Governments are instituted to protect our rights and secure our persons, our belongings, and our boundaries. If the Hermosa Beach City Council must force early closures for bars and rowdy restaurants to ensure the safety of the residents, then so be it. Such interventions serve the public interest far more than telling people where and if they may smoke.
