Romney is just no appealing. He speaks from a script, not from the hip. He is not sickening, necessarily, but he does not enliven or enchant many. Very likely, his most ardent followers just want to sink their hopes in someone who has a 51% chance of winning the nomination in the Summer.
Rick Santorum is full of spirit, but not the kind that religions skeptics and independents may be called to receive. Santorum's views on women, race, sex, and the role of government may be enough to make others "vomit", but the fact that he is not a "lukewarm" mix like Massachusetts like wannabe National Conservative Mitt Romney only underscores that Santorum's strength, along with the other GOP candidates and even President Obama, is that they are "not Romney."
Of course, the not so palatable palate of choices for the Republican voters has not turned on their appetite. A greater number of voters have avoided voting in the GOP primaries altogether. Turning down the options before them, primary voters may have to settle on a bland candidate, one who will fail to fire up the base and fire the incumbent in the Executive Mansion.
The whole scenario is sickening, to be sure.
