Now incumbent Democrats will face a real challenge in California.
If voters want a change, they now have the opportunity to lodge their
dislike against an upstanding though hardly outstanding Congressional member.
Peter Stark of San Leandro is the first openly avowed atheist to serve in
Congress. He is also one of th errant and erratic in the Congressional fold,
according to Debra Saunders. After thirty-plus years in power, politicians
begin to view themselves as impervious and resistant to challenge. Henry Waxman
of the Beverly Hills area rarely prints posters to advertise his reelection
efforts. He has handily won every election for years.
Congressman Stark is not exception to the Beltway myopia that overtakes a
Congressman who has been in power for too long. He has uttered offensive
remarks time and again, only to receive at least 60% of the vote in his
district every election cycle for the past forty years.
Perhaps the long-winded and short-on-respect Congress is going to endure a
much-needed departure from the halls of power at long last. Just because a
state has grown solidly Democratic does not mean that constituents have to
tolerate out-of-touch representatives who still insist on styling themselves as
unaccountable to the people.
Mr. Stark may be praying to God at least, as he will certainly find himself
in the foxhole of a primary challenge that will end up in a long-awaited
run-off.
Good look to Mr. Eric Swalwell. Though I am a registered Republican, I would
have voted for you without hesitation if I lived in the Bay Area.
