The governor who gave the Keynote Speech at the 2012
Republican National Convention will not be speaking at the “Comic-Con” of
conservative conventions, per syndicated columnist Jonah Goldberg. The
Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) just snubbed Governor Chris
Christie for their 2013 convention, apparently because of his moderate views on
certain policy issues. However, “Apprentice” mogul Donald Trump stumped CPAC in
2012, and he has a Democratic past.
The same governor who indicted (and righteously so) “old
retread Jerry Brown” for raising taxes, will not be recognized for lowering
taxes three years in a row with balanced budgets. The governor who called out
President Obama for his inaction in Washington: “What the hell are we paying
you for?”, will not be able to pay his respects to future party leaders about
his future prospects in a party looking for leadership, howbeit imperfect. The
governor who told the unions the truth about pensions and benefits, who enacted
real reforms in a Democratic state while achieving a historic 74% approval
rating, will not be able to tell other conservatives how he did it, and what
they can do to replicate the same successes in their local, state, and national
constituencies.
Conservatism comes in many shapes and sizes. New Jersey’s
governor is no exception. Adopting the bitter retort of one local reader, I
would prefer “Guv Fatboy” Chris Christie any day to Barack “Big Government”
Obama, or any other Democratic Party leader who wants to get fat off the
taxpayers in this country.
