Rob Burchett: Alberta Joining America?

Center-westerly Alberta province in Canada (where most of the oil reserves are strategically located) wants to actually secede from far-left progressive Canada. We all hoped that when the new PM came in that we would see a center-right-leaning new government…we all missed that and now they are stuck waiting many years to overcome that disaster…but it won’t be OUR problem unless the secessionists gain enough signatures and then (according to Trump and some others) they will virtually EXPECT to become an American State. Read ON:

I am not all that convinced that this would be a good idea from a strictly selfish US point of view:

  • Trump thinks it sounds good but if you think it thru; won’t that force a vote on our other “protectorates” like Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa who are all 99.99% dependents of ours already….just watch the rain fall anywhere in any of those countries who can’t VOTE but do have ‘representation’ of sorts, but DON’T pay taxes and watch their collective hats all come out to get $$$ I for one don’t want to ever see those 3 beggar nations (pardon me please) become states.
  • None of the bottom-three have any goods or services to offer the world….much less any stock in trade, unskilled labor which is a 99% welfare state….they will surely clamor to be next in line and yell even louder than they already do
  • OK so Alberta brings a HELLUVA dowry here with 95% of Canada’s oil reserves but won’t their Canadian big brother gov’t claw that back and never buy it from the US / Alberta consortium?
  • Terribly important point: Where will we put a 51st STAR on the flag? Or 52, 53, 54, etc. etc?
  • Will we staple on a secondary flag with ‘extra stars/ stripes’ to supplement the 50? Sounds silly right?
  • All we would get out of this deal is oil and nothing else I can see (arguments accepted…..) but no real reason to alter the entire course of the US as I see it

A better idea; let them set up their new “country” of Alberta, Inc. and then we will “recognize” them and install an Embassy, write trade agreements and let them go their own way & we can buy their products (or NOT) at fair market value

They can join the stock exchanges like any other country, sell bonds, raise capital, build infrastructure, levy taxes (so does Canada still get some $$ for their airports/ rails/ electricity/ roads, etc.??) that IS their problem BUT they have never answered that question before; NOW they are the newly “freed country” and they have to all do their homework & probably (gasp!) set tariffs! To get revenue (just like the US did for 100 years after becoming a new COUNTRY with no tax base. Remember??

Say Alberta, Inc. you get your electric power, water, etc. and more from the other providers in other provinces….SO you will have to buy those commodities from ‘foreign country’ providers as they are the sole source of all of them for the foreseeable future. Try not to overlook the simple things eh? It sounds cool until you wake up on Monday post-election sweeping up the confetti and find you have no utilities.

Comments? Shields are UP! I have a few Canadian friends and I hope to hear from some of them who REALLY know WTF is going on.

How's this for a Christmas gift, Alberta?

178,000 signatures and Alberta will be on their way to voting themselves independent of Canada.

With all the oil regulations and liberal nonsense in Canada, Alberta wants out. And the Alberta Prosperity Project is sure the conservatives will never win another federal election, which will only lead to more nonsense. Also a perk, Health Canada will hold no power over Alberta should they secede.

They tried to do this earlier in the year, but the question, "Do you agree that the province of Alberta shall become a sovereign country and cease to be a province in Canada?" was declared unconstitutional for some reason.

Now, after passage of Bill 14, which allows for citizen initiatives to move forward even if they haven't been vetted for constitutionality, Alberta is good to go and will likely vote in 2026 on secession should they get the signatures.

There is an opposing initiative. Here's the CBC:

An opposing citizen initiative petition was declared successful by Elections Alberta earlier this month, after it collected the amount of signatures it needed before the deadline.

The Alberta Forever Canada petition asked the question: 'Do you agree that Alberta should remain within Canada?'

Former deputy premier of Alberta Thomas Lukaszuk, the man behind the petition, has previously said his goal is to have the provincial government ask the petition's question in the legislature and then to have MLAs vote on it.

If the Alberta Prosperity Project's proposal is successful, Lukaszuk says he'll "put together a strong case for why Alberta should stay in Canada."

No word yet on when the referendum would take place, but should it pass we'd be one step closer to a 51st state!
