I understand the frustration of individuals on the left, or liberals in general.
They see this fallen world, imperfect, immoral, unfeeling, unfair.
They see people who prosper, people who do not, and these disparities suggest something is evil at work in the world.
However, those who truly care about helping others, do not understand that they have nothing to give to help them.
Yet the real liberals, the ones who see the injustice, who want to "make things better" feel guilty that they have it "so good", compared to everyone else.
They feel guilty, they feel condemned.
The fact remains unequivocal -- we all feel guilty, set apart, out of step, out of touch, out to look for something that we do not have for whatever reason.
This guilt, this sense of "out of place", is sin, something that every one of us has inherited from Adam, the first man, who sinned against God by wanting to be God, instead of resting in perfect dependence and wholeness on God.
This same "rebellion" remains at work in all of us.
We are forever limited in our own efforts because of sin, because of death, because of this separation that we have inherited from Adam.
In a very clear sense indeed, that is "unfair".
Yet the way, or rather the Way, back to a righteous standing before God could not be easier:
"But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man's trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift overflowed to the many by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ." (Romans 5: 15)
Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life -- all three which every man on this earth is seeking.
He is all give, and no need to take. For this reason, one can read "free gift" because when God gives, He is not expecting anything in return, either then or now, either later or whenever. He is blessed because as we receive from Him, we grow in grace and knowledge of Him, and thus we give to others.
This cascade of Living Water flows on down, flows throughout the world:
"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." (John 7: 38)
Water is not "living" if it simply flows back from whence it came! Living water by nature flows outward and abroad to all.
In our own efforts, we fall from grace. In our efforts to try and do more, we create more harm than good.
Consider the example of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:
"38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her." (Luke 10: 38-42)
Mary drew from, took from Jesus, and He was blessed for all the taking. Martha wanted to do all the work, do all the giving, and as a result she chided Jesus and her sister in one phrase.
Martha is a perfect example of the liberal busy-bodies in our governments today. They go about "doing good" in their own efforts, yet they are broken down, tired, embittered, and seek to persecute those who do not do what they are doing.
Liberals see a world which is incredibly lacking, but their efforts only make the bad problem worse. In effect, human beings have to be conservative, let matters lie as far as their own efforts are concerned.
Yet unlike man, God cannot help but be liberal, for that is His nature. The same God who created the heaven and the earth in six days, the same God who made man, and called him "very good", the same God who provided for man when he had sinned against him, first taking the skin of a lamb, then providing nothing but blessings and provisions, then providing a nation out of which His Son would be born for the world, then through this Son blessing the whole world with grace and peace and joy, that through Him we might live and move and have our being.
Humans must be conservative -- in fact, we are called to rest from all our labors, that God may be liberal and work through us.
Human beings must be conservative -- God cannot help but be liberal!
