Dear Torrance Residents
I am writing to you today because I am deeply concerned about the fact that there have been very serious allegations of FINANCIAL ELDER ABUSE by Torrance Councilmember Asam Sheikh against his late 92 year old neighbor John Fleming.
These allegations were brought to my attention in an article that was published in the California Courier (See: https://californiacourier.news/2026/04/asam-sheikh-torrance-councilman-veteran-abuse/). Torrance residents deserve to know the truth about these allegations about an individual who claims to represent them. I have seen multiple posts in your Facebook group as well as others which have promptly disappeared a few hours later. One must ask: is the city intentionally censoring information to protect one of their councilmembers?
A formal complaint detailing the elder abuse has been filed with the District Attorney of Los Angeles. Anita Fleming-O'Brien, the victim's daughter, states that Sheikh used his position as city planning commissioner and city councilmember to mislead his late 92-year-old neighbor, Mr. John Fleming, into transferring his home, retirement savings, and his personal property to the council member's family, amounting to $1.5 MILLION DOLLARS.
The article also states that John Fleming's death certificate showed the late neighbor died due to "SEVERE PROTEIN CALORIE MALNUTRITION" all while Sheikh claimed to be his caretaker. Anita states she did not even know about “Sheikh's existence in her father's life” until after his passing: "I didn’t even know about Mr. Sheikh. My father never talked about him. Everything was hidden from me."
Reportedly, Sheikh also IGNORED John Fleming's wishes to not have a memorial service and instead coordinated an ISLAMIC MEMORIAL FLYER AND ISLAMIC PRAYER, honoring the councilmember's Muslim religion rather than Fleming's Catholic beliefs. Fleming's immediate family was not even informed of the memorial service or his passing. Sheikh still campaigns with Mr. Fleming's photo on his website.
In the article, Sheikh has dismissed this as "a smear campaign." These are very serious allegations and Torrance residents deserve the truth on this matter. Dismissing allegations of elder abuse as a smear campaign is NOT an adequate answer.

Serious Allegations of Financial Elder Abuse Against Torrance Councilmember Asam Sheikh
If Sheikh is guilty of these allegations, Torrance residents MUST DEMAND HIS RESIGNATION. He has no business representing our city and is a threat to seniors in our community.
