Fareed Zakaria’s Failed Take on California’s Failed Governance

In June 2026, former Newsweek and Time Magazine editor (and one-time plagiarist), now current CNN host Fareed Zakaria made a stunning admission about the Golden State: “How California became a study in failed governance.” To his credit, Zakaria has not been afraid to discuss issues which the Left hides and the Democratic Party runs from, like the strong connection between Muslims majorities and rising terrorism.

On October 2nd, 2026, CNN’s Elex Michelson interviewed his colleague about this article, whose subject was timely with the current election season in California.

Yes, Zakaria has argued the obvious. If you want to see what failure in the face of opportunity and plenty looks like, look at California. The more compelling aspect of his admission is that a liberal pundit in the national media is willing to state the obvious. We all agree: California is dysfunction writ large. There is more to the story, but at least Fareed states what his colleagues won’t acknowledge.

To his detriment, however, Zakaria outlines a bunch of solutions that miss the mark and cover up the real reasons for California’s precipitous and public decline.

At the outset of his interview, he claims that California projects and programs have come to a standstill and can accomplish nothing because of “vetocracy” throughout the state government, i.e., some apparatus or decision-maker or rule frustrates any effort for reform, growth, or change. For this term, he properly credited social scientist (and Trump-hater) Francis Fukuyama.

Explaining his argument, Zakaria points out that the bullet train approved by California voters in 2008 would have been built by now, but for the constant environmental challenges. Homelessness could have been solved if local leaders had cooperated with the state and left-wing homeless advocates wouldn’t block enforcement measures with endless lawsuits. Reforms to improve public safety, road repairs, and education could all take place if there wasn’t the relentless interest-group hustle that stopped everything.

On the surface, this “vetocracy” argument makes little sense. The California Democratic Party hegemon running the state legislation has held veto-proof supermajorities since 2016. Republican opposition can only show up, speak up, and vote “No!” on the worst stuff (sometimes, they vote with the rest of the supermajority on bad stuff!), then cash their checks and campaign for another two years to do the same rigmarole over and over. The Democrats have carte blanche power to do whatever they want. They could pass laws to streamline the bureaucracy, expedite change, enact better reforms, and fire the executives responsible for accomplishing those tasks.

But they don’t.

Zakaria’s larger theme that California Democratic leaders want to do the right thing, but can’t, is completely out of touch with reality. As a lifelong California resident, I have no idea what Zakaria is talking about, and why should he? He resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, another bubble of the uber-rich and well-connected, a well of Deep Blue political arrogance detached from the concerns and consequences of Democratic policy.  He loves California, but how many times has he visited? Has he ever lived there?

Regardless of California’s constant struggle, endless delays and frustrations to get anything done, the problem isn’t that everyone wants to work together but fails because of the bureaucracy. The supermajority Democratic powers that be love the red tape, the litigation, the delays, the incompetence, the virtue-signaling without virtue. They play into the will and wishes of their major donors: labor unions, left-wing interest groups, and the endless brigade of bureaucrats who consistently vote Democrat.

Performative politics among California leaders is the rule, not the exception. Picture lame-duck (and long-shot no-chance Presidential aspirant) Governor Gavin Newsom posing for well-timed photos in front of big media journalists (in reality, propagandists) while picking up some trash along the 405 freeway. Thanks, Gav, you picked up some garbage. How about enforcing the vagrancy laws on state property so that illegal homeless encampments don’t pollute our roads? Some twisted statistics, empty comparisons, and some jabs at President Trump dominate Democratic pols attempting to make a difference.

There are other problems with Zakaria’s take on California’s failed politics, or rather politics of failure, including his fawning treatment of liberal voters. Zakaria claimed that somewhat educated people vote for Democrats. They can’t be educated in any meaningful fashion if they are voting against their own interests. Failed public safety measures (including lack of coordination among departments) led to the Pacific Palisades inferno. The other issues (homelessness, year-round wildfires, rising crime) grow worse year by year, yet those educated keep voting for the same politicians who never fix the problem. That’s insanity.

When Michaelson asked why the voters keep voting for the same failed party leadership, Zakaria dodged their bad thinking and smeared Republicans, particularly President Trump. He faulted their lack of “openness” to diversity, immigration, and trade. He claimed that Republicans are “not friendly to market economics.” What does he think of Democrats, then?

Zakaria won’t accept that the Democrats own the failures, and Trump’s ascendancy in the Republican Party does not absolve them. Towards the end of his interview, Zakaria actually claimed that the Democratic Party’s heart is in the right place. Are you kidding me? If they have a heart, it’s dedicated to the rich getting richer off government cronyism and cash (how do “public servants” like Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsom get so rich having served most of their adult lives in government?), pandering to diabolical identity politics (LGBT celebrations, transgender sanctuary state laws, reparations for African Americans in a state which entered the union as a Free State), and non-stop Trump bashing. That’s former AG and current gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra’s favorite sport, by the way, but at least his Republican opponent ridiculed him for such weak answers in the face of California’s growing problems.

Adding insult to his failed policy prescription, Zakaria praised recently-elected San Francisco mayor Dan Lurie as a “cry for help” from the voters in The City fed up with the broad array of failures. Crime rates have dropped, homelessness has decreased, and a more moderate, pro-Lurie board of supervisors has taken power. However, the open-air drug markets persist, major conferences are not returning, and small businesses have not bounced back. Lurie is moderate compared to the Democratic Socialists of America, but simply dialing down the dysfunction should not be the best standard for better governance.

Worst of all, Zakaria actually praised DSA New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani. The former CNN contributor can identify all the problems with California he can find, but to suggest that a vile, communist, anti-Semitic perennial college student turned big-city mayor is focused on basic issues is preposterous: the rise in hate crimes, onerous tax policies, government-run grocery stores, failed rent-control policies, and hands-off approaches to the police department all reveal a boy mayor trying to fill shoes he cannot fit.

Democratic powerbrokers from Sacramento to San Diego follow the Mamdani model, generating failure and incompetence due to their “progressive” vision, all while ignoring reality, diminishing losses, and hiding the truth about the plagued state, but at least they feel good about themselves. Their vision is right, reality be damned.

When a political class celebrates such failure as success, why would they change it?

"SHAME ON YOU, AL! HOW DARE YOU!" Muratsuchi Gets Hit Hard at September 7, 2024 Torrance Town Hall

I have attended a number of Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi's (D-Torrance) town halls.

For the last year, I have been taking a slightly different approach.

I am listening to more of the concerns of other people in the audience. Instead of simply spouting off my outrage with his terrible governance, I want to know if other people share my concerns.

In the past, I didn't really care or concern myself with how other people felt about local or state issues. Now, I am letting other people have their say first.

I have been pleasantly and gratefully surprised that many residents in the South Bay are sharing my frustration with Al Muratsuchi's abject liberalism. He puts illegal aliens, teachers unions, and left-wing woke policies head of the needs of his constituents.

And they are calling him out on it!

A number of people confronted Al Muratsuchi for wanting to keep obscene materials in libraries, available for children. A number of residents blasted Muratsuchi for pushing all the benefits for illegal aliens, while ignoring American citizens.

And then I pounced.

As in other town halls, Muratsuchi was clearly shaken when I confronted him for voting to undermine voter ID laws. I also blasted him for protecting pornographic books, keeping them available for children. I also brought up the horrific tenure of LA County District Attorney George Gascon, and how he should be supporting Nathan Hochman.

As expected, he accused me of stating outright lies, and his sycophant supporters all applauded him. I do appreciate, though, that other members of the audience pushed back on his charges against me, especially regarding voter ID laws.

Check out this confrontation with Asm. Muratsuchi, and let me know what you think.

Single Mother Complains About Home Loans for Illegals (AB 1840)

On September 7th, 2024, CA State Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), hosted a town hall in the city of Torrance.

He always uses the Torrance City Council chambers for his meetings.

Like the last town hall in 2023, the crowd was filled with a number of outraged citizens fed up with the terrible mismanagement in Sacramento.

The hottest topic? Illegal immigration, and the fact that the state legislature passed a bill that would allow illegal aliens to qualify for home loans and grant them $150,000 in loan payments!

This is beyond disgusting! The state legislature is using our money to aid and abet illegal aliens not only breaking into our country, but giving them housing, while American citizens struggle to make ends meet and cannot even afford basic necessities.

There were many comments slamming the state assemblyman This woman shared the plight that AMERICAN CITIZENS are facing just to purchase a home.

She is competing with all kinds of difficult challenges to purchase her own home.

"It's already harder for Americans to qualify."

She was really upset, and she was right!

This woman listed all the conflicts and challenges that American citizens face just to get a home.

And then the state legislature wanted to add illegal aliens to the mix!

It's just unbelievable how callous and uncaring our representatives have become.

This lady said it perfectly: "The system is against us."

Yes, indeed.

Fire Gabriel Gipe (Don't Just Tell Me About Him)

Over the past two hours, I have received a number of texts, emails, and phone calls about Mr. Gabriel Gipe, an Antifa soyboy who was just exposed by Project Veritas this morning.

Antifa Soyboy Gabriel Gipe
Do not allow him around your children!

Hey, thanks for letting me know, folks, but here's the deal:

I already knew about it.

Let's go one step further: I am actually doing something about it!

I contacted the Natomas Unified School District, where the guy works! I emailed the teacher himself, and I also emailed the school board members to demand his firing!

Sharing an article from Project Veritas is all nice and good, I guess.

But it's not enough.

Don't just share an article: Be Brave and Do Something.

In fact, sending an email, making a phone call is not even all that brave, but it is a very simple something that everyone can do!

So, DO IT!

Heck, I am even providing you the contact information below:

(Partial) Victory! AB 455 Dead (For Now)

I must start this post with an essential quote from Thomas Jefferson:

This statement will come into play more forcefully shortly.

For now, let's start with the good news:

I received great news from multiple sources today.

The Vaccine Passport/Vaccine Mandate bill in Sacramento is dead.

AB 455 is going nowhere. The truth is that there was no way that the corruptocracy in Sacramento could have every pushed through that terrible bill. There was no time. The deadline for all legislation is Friday, September 10, 2021, and normally the state legislature does not conduct any real business on Friday.

So, the bill is dead. The vaccine passport scheme is dead

Well, it's dead dor now.

And this is a victory! Yes, people should rejoice.

Well, a partial victory.

Here's the full report from an activist organization in the state of California:

YOU DID IT CALIFORNIA!

ASSEMBLY BILL 455

According to numerous capital sources AB 455 is dead for this legislative season.

PERK — August 30, 2021

Dear Perk Members,

I am sure you are overwhelmed with emotions right now! I am too. This bill was one of the worst I have ever seen. I am so relieved to hear that AB455, which would have imposed a statewide "Covid Vaccine Passport,” is now dead. I am so proud of the army of Californians who answered the call. THANK YOU!!!

If it had passed, this bill would have removed people from society, unless fully vaccinated with the covid shot. If it had passed, this bill would have created a vaccine mandate on private industry by requiring ALL employers in California to require all their employees to be fully vaccinated, including all Independent Contractors to be fully vaccinated. Secondly, it would have required everyone 12 years and older to be fully vaccinated to enter any indoor spaces.

Our fight is still on with the other bill. Now, all eyes need to be on AB1102. This one must not pass either. We still have to oppose AB1102. The digital vaccine passport comes in tandem with this second bill, currently drafted, called AB1102, On Page 7, Item (E), is the digital vaccine passport in the form of the SMART HEALTH APP. More on this soon.

GRATITUDE calls are just as important as opposition calls. Please

·  Take action now and email your state legislators immediately and tell them thank you for opposing AB455.

·  Click here: https://oneclickpolitics.global.ssl.fastly.net/messages/edit?promo_id=13924

·  There are also several rallies organizing at the Capitol in Sacramento.  One is on September 8 at 10 AM. See more details about the bills and vaccine passports on our website.  www.perk-group.com

Thank you! This is a reflection on you, the people of California, that you do make a difference!

We may all sleep just a little better tonight. We will be prepared with our army if this bill comes back in a special session this year or next year’s bills. Sending you all love and a BIG HUG!

Now, here's the deal, folks:

Notice that there is another bill that we still need to fight: AB 1102.

Think about this aspect, as well: why did we have to get to this point where we are fighting vaccine passports in the first place?

People across the state should be beating up their state legislators EVERY DAY -- ALL THE TIME.

This kind of organizing and activism needed to be happening FIVE YEARS AGO.

TEN YEARS AGO!

Where have you all been?

MassResistance has been fighting the LGBT agenda, one if not the keymost element against this culture war for years.

Have you all forgotten what Thomas Jefferson warned all of us?
