Election 1976: B-One Bob vs. Gary Familian in CD 27 (West and South Torrance)

Ugly campaigns are nothing new to the South Bay, unfortunately. I covered the congressional race that pitted Robert K. Dornan against Gary Familian in 1976. The mudslinging was particularly intense, fueled by more than $1 million in campaign expenditures, a record for that time. Familian linked Dornan to the KKK and alleged he was a wife beater; Dornan responded by filing a libel suit. It always struck me how even the nicest candidate could resort to really ugly behavior in the heat of a campaign. I once asked Jim Brooks, who managed his wife's campaign against Jane Harman, why they resorted to negative tactics instead of sticking to policy debates. Negative campaigning works, he replied. -- David Hunt

This comment above piqued my interest about Congressional politics in the South Bay.

I found it underneath the article about me and members of the Beach Cities Republicans when we went after Al Muratsuchi and his Big Green liberal cronies following a contentious debate. We tried to confront him on his liberal lunacy and the terrible lies that he printed about Assemblyman David Hadley in the last two months of mailers stuffing everyone's mail boxes.

Robert Dornan

This Dornan vs. Familian race was particularly riveting.

Following another search, I found a number of articles covering this race.

Why was it particularly interesting to me, though?

1. Robert "B-One Bob" Dornan the fiery, outspoken conservative, actor, and radio host was running against a well-connected Democrat. I'm a fan of Bob Dornan, and was pleasantly surprised that he represented the Torrance area at one time!

2. The contest was an open seat, the first time since 1962. Alphonzo Bell, who had headed the Republican Party of Los Angeles County, retired from the seat to attempt a US Senate bid. Bell would lose the primary to S. I. Hayakawa, who would win the seat in the general election.

3. It was the Westside seat, where Henry Waxman was trying to work his political machine with UCLA friend and fellow graduate Howard Berman.

4. This race was tied to the campaign events I was engaging in against Al Muratsuchi in my club's efforts to help David Hadley's re-election bid.

Then I found this incredible blog which featured the efforts and exploits of the Young Republicans and the Los Angeles County Republican Party from the late 1970s and the early 1980s!

The name? The Rancho del Cielo blog.

In the late 1970s, Torrance was divided into three Congressional Districts.

Bob Dornan ran in the 27th Congressional District:

Here's the close up of the parts of Torrance which fell within the district's boundaries:

Election 1976 was one of the most expensive on record for its time.

From the Washington Post:

1976 Gary Familian, a California Democrat defeated by Dornan while outspending him, $637,080 to $403,675

Notice that even though the Democrat outspent Dornan, he still lost!

Here's some information from the Rancho Del Cielo blog about that race:
From right to left:
B-One Bob, Armand Vaquer, and Frank Lunney

It was the late summer of 1976 and I had previously returned from the 1976 Republican National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. I attended as a California Ronald Reagan Delegate. Unfortunately, Reagan lost the GOP nomination by a whisker to President Gerald Ford.

Following the convention, I devoted my time working in the Paul Bannai (for re-election to the state Assembly) and Robert K. Dornan's campaign for congress against Gary Familian.  I was 2nd V.P. of the Los Angeles County Young Republicans at the time, so I, at least, had some official party standing (to a degree).

The Dornan Campaign set up a "Youths For Dornan" campaign group and a photo session to publicize the organization was scheduled.  I enlisted Frank into the group (it didn't take much persuasion as Frank was a Dornan fan anyway) to take part in the campaign and photo shoot.

We met at Dornan's campaign headquarters to do the shoot.  The accompanying two photos are from the photo session.  I was 22 at the time and Frank was 18.

Dornan went on to win the seat in Congress. When President Jimmy Carter (who defeated Ford in the 1976 general election) decided to kill the B-1 bomber program, Dornan led the outrage over the action ("They're breaking out the vodka bottles in the Kremlin!"). He gained the nickname of "B-1 Bob."

Final Reflection

Delving into Congressional history in the South Bay has become increasingly intriguing and rewarding.

I will be editing and updating this blog in the next few months as I gather more information.

Stay tuned!

The Incredible, Shrinking OC Weakly: Living in the Past, Dying in the Now

There's one target I love going after: the liberal media.

The Mainstream Media has repeated exposed how out of touch they have become, on many issues. The local papers have become pawns in a corporate buyout as the local press loses readers and funding. Why? Technology, for the most part. Local and middle-sized communities can better rely on their I-phones and computers to get the news that they need.

It's easier for any citizen to report and write on events, too.

So, as newspapers lose readers, subscriptions, and circulation, more of them have to rely on explicit advertising or write sensationalist headlines.

One cover page of the Daily Breeze focused on a "transgender teen" at Banning High School. Another story focused on another confused boy pretending to be a girl, and her indulgent parents who wrote a kids' book promoting this nonsense.

Orange County readers have noticed that the once center-right OC Register is pushing a more left-wing agenda. Another reason why their readership is declining.

But if anyone wants to see the slow demise of the liberal media, look no further than the OC Weekly, better labeled "Weakly".

Apparently, critics used this term before against the alt-left publication:

"1996 called ..." So, people thought the magazine was weak back then?

No, actually it was 1995:
Not surprised. They used the work "weak", so not sure about their lack of originality, but it certainly stands out ...

Has anyone looked at the stories printed by this dwindling publication?

Check out the stories printed in its New Years Eve/Day line-up:

One of the articles talks about ... bad or leftover booze? Seriously? This is news?!

Then there's this offensive picture of a stereotypical Mexican, written by race-baiting Gustavo Arellano.

And a funny thing about Gustavo ... he used to work for LA Weekly but for some reason the two publications are no longer related or connected. What gives?

A friend of mine checked out the OC Weekly headuarters in Fountain Valley.

It's a plain location with one person working at a desk. The LA Weekly office is locked behind a gated front. People have to buzz in in order to meet with anyone inside.

The magazine had become a much deluded and limited pulp pile compared to ten or twenty years ago.

There are few stories to read, either ...
In fact, aside from the smattering of stories (if you can call them that), the OC Weakly doesn't have much else besides:

Weed and porn: brings a whole new meaning to "OC Weakly", doesn't it?

They also live in past victories, which have not added anything to their credibility, if they have any, in nearly ... a decade!

Bob Dornan lost in 1996--that's 20 YEARS AGO!

Michael Carona was convicted of federal corruption charges in 2009. He went to prison in 2011. He was released in 2015.

OLD NEWS.

Seriously, the cracker-jack reporters are living off of old glories. Have they done anything prescient or upbeat to justified continued readership? They fawn over Santa Ana, including a Republican Latina elected to local office. They did huge story about Mission Viejo Little League players doing a Mexican-Donald Trump skit. In poor taste, definitely.

Michael Carona hates me
You don't know what I'm talking about?
WHAT!
they also love to crush and shame Tony Rauckauckas, the Orange County District Attorney, who prosecuted police officers for beating a homeless schizophrenic, who later died.

Yep. "Tony Baloney" is a threat to western civilization. The jailhouse informant investigation is a serious matter, though. If the DA did something wrong he needs to own it.

But OCWeakly has hated Rauckauckas for decades. YAWN.

As for their Dornan obession -- They are trying to stir up readership with a story from 20 years ago?

Oh, and the only reason why B-One Bob lost against loony Loretta Sanchez was voter fraud. An investigation into the race confirmed that illegals had voted in the election, and yet nothing was done about it. There should have been a do-over for the election right after the 1996 election.

Another Twitter follower shared the following two weeks ago:
They have spent more time obsessing over me, rather than reporting on what Orange Coast College Republicans did to a nutty liberal professor who libeled Donald Trump as a "white supremacist."

They do not report on upcoming issues.

They rely on childish retorts.

R. Scott Moxley is living off whatever happened with ex-Sheriff Michael Carona.

They still beat up on Robert Dornan.

Oh ... and they fell into my trap. Moxley obviously thought he was going to turn the tables on me, but I anticipated that he would write something about me after I had blasted his lack of research on former Los Angeles County Congressman Bob Dornan. He had represented Torrance and Palos Verdes in the last 1970s and early 1980s, but they still look at him as primarily an Orange County representative.

And then their "Mexican humorist" Gustavo Arellano has been reduced to food criticism? Really.

This has been one of the easiest attacks on the liberal media yet!

Thanks guys, really! #OCWEAKLY!!

Gustavo Arallano: "I'm here for the food.
No one reads my anti-Anglo dreck!"
Before I go, I must say ... they have helped me far more than they helped themsevlves.

R. Scott Moxley wrote a hit (or hate?) piece against me, and I got far more respect and support from Californians.

As for them, their readership is going down already, and looks like it just slipped a little further. This altercation reminds me a lot of what Ben Shapiro did to uber-liberal propagandist Piers Morgan in their two interviews.

Shapiro demolished Piers, his ratings tanked, and then he was fired.

The lack of journalistic integrity and professionalism, plus the virulent strain of anti-Israel, pro-Communist sentiment is doing the liberal media industry. Instead of "Ask a Mexican", Arrellano, San Roman, and Moxley ought to "Ask a Cuban" what they thought of communism under Fidel Castro, and why they fled their home country.

For all the above listed reasons, it sure looks like OC Weakly will be following the same path as the OC Register, Great Britain's "News of the World"  and "The Daily Beast."

B-One Bob is BACK! - OC Weekly Reports ...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ...

Actually, the time and place are well-known, familiar, and close to me.

It was the South Bay and up through the Santa Monica Coast line.

The year? 1976.

Robert Dornan, later known as B-One Bob, was running for Congress to replace the moderate Alphonzo Bell.

Bob Dornan

Bell, part of the legacied family connected to Bel Air, Bell Gardens, the City of Bell, had represented the West side down to the South Bay for 16 years.

Now Bob Dornan, more conservative and bombastic, was running for office.

He took on well-known Democrat from the West LA region--Gary Familian.

He would later seek a bid for US Senate in 1982, then carpet-bag to Orange County, where he defeated an incumbent Democrat, serving in Congress until 1996.

What were his thoughts on Election 2016 and Donald Trump?

OC Weekly reports ...

Bob Dornan Discusses Donald Trump, Diabolical Clintons, Violence,Traitors, Art and Boot Licking

Our younger readers may not know about Robert K. Dornan, which is a shame because during the height of his national notoriety in the 1980s and 90s the combative Orange County congressman would have frightened Donald Trump off political stages.

Not sure that would happen, but Dornan definitely frightened left-wing trolls like Michael Moore, who wanted to lock Dornan in an insane asylum!

Combining a rightwing ideology with his Catholic faith, an enormous ego, angry temperament, theatrical instincts and DNA that allowed him to routinely answer unasked questions for 30 minutes or longer, Dornan took on women’s rights, abortion, gays, communists, Mexican immigrants, Democrats, Jews and Bill Clinton’s “dough-boy thighs” with unprecedented hostility. Clinton once observed that the New York City native whose uncle starred in the Wizard of Oz acted like a crazed street dog suffering rabies. From 1985 to 1997, Dornan employed a nasty attitude not just to defeat opponent after opponent. He annihilated them. As a result, we sarcastically called him the "congressman for life" from Garden Grove.

The writer forgets that he represented part of Torrance and the Palos Verdes peninsula in the late 1970's to the early 1980's.

How could he have forgotten that?

Then the impossible happened after a failed Republican presidential primary bid that won the attention of comedians across the nation. An unknown Latina Democrat named Loretta Sanchez startled the political world in 1996 by taking this bitter white man’s job. Dornan claimed nuns and “illegal immigrant” voters carried across the border by yours truly had stolen his seat. Two years later, he made that laughable crusade the centerpiece of his effort to return to Congress, failed again against Sanchez and retired to northern Virginia.

Keep in mind -- this article is written by an embittered liberal who now must serve under a "right-wing" popular nationalist President who wants to Make America Great Again.

Years have gone by with little fanfare. Perhaps, he’s been busy monitoring all of his generous government pension accounts. Or plotting a new campaign, a move we’ve prayed would happen if only for the entertainment we’ve missed.

Actually, he ran for Congress again in 2004 in a primary challenge against Dana Rohrabacher. That bid failed miserably.

He still visits the radio show circuit, too.

Great news: Dornan has returned to the national scene. On Nov. 15, the tire-on-loose-gravel-voiced 83-year-old emerged on Sean Hannity’s radio show and brought back memories of our old telephone interviews where I needed chunks of notepads to diagram the rambling subject matters his mind spewed without prompting. It appears nothing has changed.

Can you say "Sore loser"?

Final Reflection

This article is a liberal rag waving the victimization card, trying to mock B-One Bob.

He was all kinds of excited about the Trump victory.

Trump's win was just like Ronald Reagan's victory in 1980.

And as I shared above, the sullen, angry "columnist" neglected to mention Dornan's final upset win against Carey Peck, the liberal son of liberal actor Gregory Peck.

Funny stuff.

Republicans had a pretty good hold on the state of California.

What happened over the last forty years?
