Democrats To Ignore U.S. Citizens: Threaten Government Shut Down For DACA Recipients
According to the Associated Press, Democrats in the Senate have served notice they will filibuster a four-week, government-wide funding bill that cleared the House Thursday evening. That could expose them to charges that they are responsible for a shutdown, but they point the finger at Republicans instead.
Agencies and departments that are considered nonessential will cease to work until Congress is able to agree on a bill for the federal budget.
"It is disappointing that U.S. Senators are willing to shut down the government on behalf of DACA recipients, when so many American citizens are suffering and in need of help," Robin Hvidston, Executive Director for We The People Rising and CA State Coordinator for The Remembrance Project, said. "First of all, the deadline for DACA recipients was extended until March of this year, so there is no urgency to shut down the government at this time. Senators should focus legislation on the more than 600,000 Veterans waiting for proper medical care, more than 102 million unemployed Americans, the more than 53 million disabled Americans and the more than 400,000 U.S. kids in foster care!"
In addition, We The People Rising members are networking with groups nationwide that are contacting U.S. Senators in opposition to DACA legislation.
President Trump has been meeting today with Democrat leaders in an attempt to avoid the looming government shut down at midnight. On Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, said he hoped to vote on the House-passed bill “soon,” and he said Americans at home would be watching to see “which senators make the patriotic decision” and which “vote to shove aside veterans, military families and vulnerable children to hold the entire country hostage... until we pass an immigration bill.”
"The actions taken today by Democrat Senators demonstrates to the American people that rather than focus on legislation and the betterment of the American people, these U.S. Senators are willing to sacrifice the American citizens' well being in order to cater to DACA recipients," Hvidston said.
Visits to the district offices of Senator Dianne Feinstein and Senator Kamala Harris are being planned for next week.
