CITIZEN LOBBYISTS STORM ASSEMBLY MEMBERS' OFFICES!
6 district offices lobbied simultaneously: Senator Ricardo Lara's Bill
On July 15, 2016, Citizen Lobbyists, statewide, lobbied in opposition to Senator Ricardo Lara's bill SB 1139, which would allow students illegally present in the United States to apply for state scholarships via the Health Professional Education Fund. To date, HPEF has awarded more than 10,500 scholarships and loan repayments totaling more than $124,000,000 to California health professionals serving in all 58 counties.
Under current law, these scholarships are for students who are U.S. citizens or for students with a specified legal status. "SB 1139 disenfranchises U.S. citizen students," Robin Hvidston, We The People Rising Executive Director & State Coordinator for The Remembrance Project, said. "These competitive health career scholarships should be reserved for our U.S. Citizen students." Members of We The People Rising, The Remembrance Project, Northern California tea party groups, CA Mass Resistance and NCIR were among groups that participated in the lobby event. "We are not calling upon our state legislators to vote no to this legislation, we are calling upon them to take a bold stance in opposition to this legislation," Hvidston said. "Our legislators should be focused upon helping our U.S. citizens to further their professional education, not those in this state illegally." "We met with Ling Ling Chang's staffer," McGetrick said. "We talked about Voting No on SB 1139 and our desire to see her and ALL CALIFORNIA REPUBLICANS work together and vote together." This Citizen Lobby team also met with the Staff of Senator Bob Huff at his nearby Brea office. "Constituents Michael Fischer and I--and later, Janice Montgomery--paid an impromptu visit to Assemblyman Donald Wagner's local office in Tustin. We spoke to Field Representative Ashley Blackwell about SB 1139," Robinson said. "She understood all the reasons that this bill needs to be defeated and said she was sure that Assemblyman Wagner would vote against it. We gave her a folder with information explaining the negative impact Senator Lara's SB 1139 bill would have on California." Assemblyman Steinorth's Senior Field Representative Socorro Pantaleon and Field Representative David Asbra met with the group.  "We thanked Assemblyman Steinorth for his no vote on SB 1139 as an Assembly Health Committee member," Hvidston said. "But we emphasized that he must take a loud and a public stance in opposition to this bill. Hold a press conference. Educate the public." In addition, representing The Remembrance Project, California, Agnes Gibboney told her story about the loss of her son who was murdered by a gang banger illegally in the USA. Barbara Tyler's brother, who has cerebral palsy and is deaf gave an excellent report, via sign language, on how social services should be reserved for disabled U.S. citizens, not illegals. ASSEMBLYMAN JAY OBERNOTLE - VICTORVILLE, CA https://ad33.asmrc.org/  Raul Rodriguez lead a team to Assemblyman Obernolte's district office."We had a meeting with his district director," Rodriguez said. "And we called for the assemblyman to stand up and take a strong stance against this bill." Rodriguez said that Assemblyman Obernolte will be voting in opposition to the bill. Rodriguez proceeded to talk about a constituent's daughter who is a teacher. She recently had her state scholarship discontinued from a program similar to the Health Professional Education Fund. He referenced this as an example of a U.S. citizen student's funding being denied as legislation to provide scholarships for illegals is moving forward in Sacramento.
