Cudahy openly declared itself, by a 4-1 council vote, a sanctuary city. Maywood has done the same.
One report had informed that the City of South Gate had appointed an illegal to its Housing Authority board. After submitting a public records request on this matter, along with other questions, I received the following response:
Greetings Mr. Schaper,
I am in receipt of your request for information regarding
the citizenship status of our City Council Members. Please be advised that ALL of our City of
South Gate Council Members are United States Citizens. They are all also our Housing Authority
Members. Hence, your request for
information on their status has been
satisfied. In regards to the salary of our Council Members, they are provided
with a stipend. The yearly amount of $7,200.00 a year, plus a communication
allowance of $1,200 and a car allowance of $1,500 yearly.
Should there be anything further, please do not hesitate to
call upon the Office of the City Clerk.
Regards,
Carmen Avalos, CMC, M.Ed., MPA
City Clerk
I noticed that this response did not resolve my concerns about the city's commissions ore advisory boards. After a second public records request to the South Gate city clerk, I received this response:
Greetings Mr. Schaper,
In response to your request for information regarding our
South Gate Commissions and Commissioners and their status. Please note that our
commissioners are US Citizens.
The city you may be referencing is not South Gate, but
Huntington Park which is adjacent to South Gate. If you have further questions,
please do not hesitate to contact the Office of the City Clerk.
Warm Regards,
CARMEN AVALOS, CMC, M.Ed, MPA
I detected a hint of (justified) disdain in the second response, The South Gate city community appears to hold citizenship in higher regard. "You must be thinking of that other city."
South Gate experienced its own spate of corruption a few years before Bell. Apparently, the rule of law means something on Southeastern Los Angeles County municipality.
