Public Education: A Wry Response to an Obvious Observation

"This district does not care about kids," one teacher shared with me.

This comment in response to another local press release, exposing another wasteful investment of Centinela Valley Unified School District, this time spending $3000 plus on sending District staff to Las Vegas to learn about how to make pizza.

Tasty, juicy gossip, indeed. Another sign upbraiding the outrageous incompetence and corruption of the school board, making short-sighted, read selfish decisions, at the expense of the school district.

Yet rather than maligning district official, how do union reps justify the infighting which has produced more conflict than comity? Political wranglings are effective, though not efficient, when curbing the actions of runaway, hasty government. There is no reason, however, for education to be run by elected officials in far-removed school boards. Nor do educators and students deserve to be the third element in ongoing battles with status quo unions seeking to protect power, hegemony, and union dues.

Who does care about the kids? When will we encourage the kids to start caring for themselves? Isn't that what education is all about?
