Right to Work -- What About Right to Learn?

The GOP Presidential candidates during their last debate in New Hampshire discussed the passage of right-to-work laws in the Granite State and elsewhere.

I applaud any effort by states to break the hold of public sector unions over their economies and prospective businesses.

However, the GOP candidates should have focused on another right, one that has been neglected among our young people.

Why not pass "Right to Learn" laws, in which students may enroll in any school that they wish, instead of being forced to attend a decrepit or sub-standard school in the same zip code.

Up to now, this cost efficient reform has been called "a voucher system", but why not dress it up as an opportunity for the youth in this country to get a better education and compel the public school system to compete for taxpayer dollars.

The issue of educational reform could propel the GOP into the national limelight much faster, as opposed to high-minded talk about the Federal Reserve, tax cuts for the rich (and for small businesses, and for everyone else for that matter), or other conservative causes.

With the right to learn, students will not just find more opportunities to work, but they will have the skill set and the capacities to advance in a growing global market.
